The first thing I did was speedread the alliance raid stuff so I could do the kino raid with other likeminded folks. Good decision too, it's a very fun raid to do blind.

I thought it was okay difficulty-wise, not as difficult as it could've been but at least it was harder than Aglaia or Euphrosyne. My group actually wiped on the last boss once but after that it seemed like everyone knew what to do and only like two people died. I think its possible the playerbase in general has improved from past patches though.

This at least seems like a positive endorsement, although it echoes what I've heard before: That the gameplay is kinda lame/slow. Coming from WoW, especially playing a Rogue from Vanilla until WotLK I'm worried that would be a deal-breaker.
I have no issues with a story-driven MMO, so long as I can get cool and thematically-fitting gear in the end, and I've mostly heard good things about FF14's story.

They're not in the free trial. You get a free fantasia (return to character creation) for completing the base game's main story, so hang onto that for when you're finished with the free trial. When you buy the game you can swap to Viera straight away.
Correct, and the free trial got expanded so you get the base game and the first two expansion, you can easily sink thousands of hours without paying, also i suggest you play ninja, since it has one of the fastest rotations in the game (even though as far as i know it still isn't as fast as a wow rotation)

The game is basically five (soon six) full length JRPGs in a trenchcoat with a very linear story. It's like 80% JRPG and 20% MMO, if you're just looking to get into raiding and stuff like that I wouldn't bother because it's genuinely going to take you three or four hundred hours to reach endgame at this point.

The problem with FF14 is they've butchered the original progression so many times to account for new skills. The story has always been an ezmode snooze and actually incredibly boring up until near lvl50, but at least back in ARR you had cool abilities to unlock and the fun of getting new jobs for the first time. But as they added levels and classes everything plays like a fricking inferior MOBA up until higher levels. The game is also incredibly repetitive outside of story. Expansions are always the same old shit, things only ever get dumbed down over time which is why I left the game despite having over 5000hrs on it. That said, if you can find a good FC that hang out and talk a lot it can be real comfy experience. I haven't played for about 3 years now but I still have a lot of online frens I made in that game.

If you don't wanna raid with trannies, you don't have to. You can just play gold saucer and run the market boards or you can run maps or whatever but end game can get very boring yes.
Unless you wanna run the same dungeon over and over for a chest piece that takes 4 weeks to grind out until they patch it again yadda yadda

no, the game has 0 respect for actual in-world exploration. You unlock flying piss easy and then promptly ignore everything about the zones because there's nothing challenging in them. I only ever go to them for gathering and at 90 nothing can target my gathers anyways due to Sneak, so the zones are just empty husks.

wasn't that pre shadowbringers? protag was definitely pretty god mode already but i'm talking more about MSQ content. The writing for side content is usually very disconnected from main content writing and often doesn't respect it much at all, so it's easier for them to just ignore the whole WoL thing to make some fun content. Having a main story revolving around fun, less serious adventures with maybe an overarching story would be a lot harder to do.
