I "grew into it" as you are calling it and got hooked on the game at at the end of ARR and early HW
I played since 2.1 but it was just ok until 2.5 then I was completely in love by 3.3
The hype's all just inside the game, it's a game people play, forumposting about it is pretty rare since there's little to complain about.

Funny thing actually, I decided to try it as one of my friends said that it was pretty cool, and I felt kind of attracted to experience a complete alien world, characters and explore foreign cultures of the lore I was completely unfamiliar with. As soon as I started as a pugilist, I felt something that I hand't felt in wow for a long-ass time, fun. Just innocent fun, where I wasn't as much leveling a class as I was just playing and enjoying a game. It was such an addictive feeling that I slowly switched completely to XIV. Even as the honeymoon is far behind and the issues have risen their heads, I still enjoy doing stuff with my FC and currently I'm aiming to achieve the Necromancer title.

I got into the game for the first time not long after Stormblood came out.
I thought it was okay but I wasn't super into it and the post ARR quests were really wearing me out.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that I was pretty close to giving up and I was riding the expectations set up for me by other people saying, don't worry once you get into Heavensword it'll all be worth it.
So, I got to the Metal Gear Solid cutscene warning box and had let it ride out on that as its last chance.
And it fricking blew my mind.
I still get shivers thinking about it to this day.
As of today I just finished Stormblood and about to start Shadowbringers.
It's been a multi year journey, I've taken a few of my friends with me and got them caught up to Stormblood and I've really fallen in love with game.
I have a much fonder appreciate for base game now, it's definitely a lot easier watching your friends go through it instead of having to play it over again; and all the fat they cut out helps a lot.

I've played it on and off since ARR when there was a free month. Shadowbringers was the first expansion I played on release, and that pretty much made it my main game. Also, I still never have once used a Fantasia, even the free one.

I grew out of it instead. Played since ARR and really tried but couldn't give less of a shit about a main story in a themepark MMO and completely stopped caring after Stormblood. Shadowbringers was fine but like everything else it had no stakes so all of the drama falls flat. Then there's nothing mechanically interesting about XIV or the way its classes play. I got to watch all the potentially unique design decisions get smoothed away into flavorless paste, any class ability that isn't 'damage' or 'increase damage' become more and more vestigial to the design. All the new dungeons get turned into FF13 tier hallways with little bubbles for boss fights. When they came out with BLU as a limited job I knew they had no ambition at all anymore with class design, and Viera/Hrothgar getting released half finished and still with no hats to this day meant they just really didn't care about what they put out either as long as people kept buying fantasias. We all knew for a long time that all the money XIV was earning was getting funneled into Squeenix's other projects rather than XIV itself but I couldn't take it anymore.

No more dungeons DPS/Skill checks like in AK, no more huge tonberry chasing you to increase urgency. Little to no reason to do FATES after the 2nd week. As much has I hate the holy trinity, making everyone DPS was not the answer

Thats a rare find. I agree with pretty much everything posted here, but I still play the game since it still isn't "flavorless paste" enough for me to the point of quitting, yet atleast.
Like you said, BLU is extremely "safe" and boring for being designed to be its own minigame but I look at it the other way. I look at it as unfinished content that has opened the door for more ambitious things down the line thanks to it's intoduction of the limited job system, I think the devs even said as much at BLUs release, that is was as much a testrun of new design ideas as it was a new "job" to play. You are spot on with the Viera/Hrothgar and Job design point though
What keeps me atleast somewhat intrested is what has been seen/heard outside of the game and their more recent trials of new content so far.
PvP was a HUGE success and injects what you and I think is missing, variety and mechanics deeper than a puddle and with YoshiPs comment on how the devs actually was at the testing stages of a "BLU battle royale" mode that since have seemed to be scrapped shows that there are atleast some people still working on the game that is trying really fricking hard to get something new(ish) out the door for people to enjoy.
Island sanctuaries is a step in a completely different direction for the game and has to be the biggest swing they've made since the ARR released housing in terms of new types of content that players can interact with and Criterion dungeons (as it sounds on paper atleast) seems like an attempt at both creating more difficult dungeon content while also making dungeons that are not just completely straight corridors anymore.
Only time will tell, but I think that the games fate is not completely sealed until we see the new jobs, reworks and new content in 7.0

DRK is a carbon copy of the 5.0 version but with 2 extra buttons to press for frick sake

The rather anemic and bland aesthetic feel of the starting city-states is a pain when you see what an Arabian Nights Ul'dah could have been like had the current writing team been able to start from scratch with it. Though with Gridania they were better off before when it was spooky hillbillies killing shit for the spirits.
I can def see them doing that now that you mention it, make each of the starting cities have the final boss/unique theme.

I was hooked on the story and every mystery I care about was solved. Brd plays the same way it has since they added and removed cast times and honestly it’s just gotten streamier and less fun.

This game cant particularly be difficult like M+ in WoW since theres almost zero CC or kiting involved. It'll just be dungeons with slightly higher numbers, and maybe 1-2 more spells per pack. Also, it doesnt have the issue M+ does where ALL progress is wiped.
Criterion Savage dungeons have no revives, a wipe resets the entire dungeon, and mobs hit considerably harder.

I originally started playing in Heavensward with my ex. I couldn't get her into WoW cause she thought the game was ugly but I knew she was into FF series so we played that together. The game was all right back then but I was still a pretty big blizzard wiener sucker because they hadn't completely destroyed Forsaken lore. Anyway I quit around early Stormblood.
Came back in Shadowbringers because Shadowlands sucked shit, started a new character from scratch and paid attention to story a lot more this time and was kinda blown away. Stormblood was a lot better than a lot of people say. Start is slow as frick but the patch content with Gosestu and Yotsuyu was great.
Shadowbringers sealed the deal though. Ardbert and Emet and the whole story is probably one my favourites ever told.
That scene when Ardbert hands you his axe is probably one of the coolest moments in gaming I can think of. The music is really damn good too. It does make me sad though that Blizzard won't hire anyone who can write a good story. I would've loved for Blizzard characters to give me the same feelings XIV has.

I tried out the trial when Stormblood released, but couldn't get on Balmung which is where I heard most of the RP happens, but a friend convinced me to give it another go towards the end of Stormblood's life cycle. Started up a guild on Mateus for roleplay, and once I got into Heavensward proper, I was hooked.
I've taken a bit of a break from the game now, especially since I'm still coping with DRK being as braindead as it was in Shadowbringers, but I plan to get back into actually playing the game soon since my FC just moved to Ishgard.
When the ARR beta came out.
I just liked all the little things that felt Final Fantasy to me, the fonts, the UI it was all pretty cool.
The game doesn't last for me forever I take a lot of breaks in between expansions and certain patches but I always come back and see whats new.
The ARR systems were my favorite even though the game is now a lot more polished and player friendly. I just liked having the open world grind systems have a bit more focus like spirit bond farming, fate farming (to an extent) and a harder crafting grind. I also miss cross class skills even though it really was a hassle. Just a lot of imperfect systems that I enjoyed in the moment.
when my older brother bought it for ps3 on release day, he ended up losing interest but i became hooked. I was 16 when i started playing and now im 25 and i still play it. Im convinced this game had a big reason why i ended up as a neet loser, but who really knows.

I'd definitely appreciate the second Lightspeed. They really kind of fricked AST's ability to ever have movement by giving them a million things to do during burst phase. Feels even worse since every other healer got the 1.5s cast time (which is great, don't get me wrong) and their free movement abilities, so Lilies, Ruin 2 and Phlegma/Toxicon. Meanwhile AST loses Lightspeed essentially.
Valid changes, but its pretty clear they are optimizing for controller users and will make all arcana AoE, maybe making Draw 45/60 sec and reworking seals AGAIN
I wouldn't be surprised if card draws end up being AoE just to remove the problem AST has of having regular active party list targeting over all other healers.

Allowed 4 and 5 stars cards in the same deck. Redid a lot of NPC decks to be made easier. Changed some regional rules to be made easier.
Upped the drop rate for a lot of the harder cards etc etc
Getting cards from NPCs was never the hard part, it was always grinding those couple of dungeons/trials that just refused to drop their shit. Maybe there are one or two NPCs with dogshit rules that make farming them a hassle but that's about it
If it wasn't hard, they wouldn't have changed droprates and the npc decks when the card mount released, especially since they also changed when those NPCs are available to play. The 4 star ruling alone made all of them a joke by default.
Its not hard to just decide to get all the cards and be done with it in 3 days now.

The imperial with Gaius' card was worse due to the drop rate, even if beating him was pretty much a given

I want to blind prog hard content like previous expac savages and ultimates. I'm okay with occasionally reading up on mechanics (how they work, not strats on how to beat them). Do I have any hope in finding a group to do this with? Every blind prog run I've joined in PF inevitably has some mouth breather rail off strats before the first pull.
you'll probably have to look up raid discords or something, i wouldn't trust pf to be able to do it properly, i sometimes help ShB savage pfs and some people just really don't have the brain power even when unsynced

I like to do min ilvl stuff so the challenge is still there, but doing BLU content and learning that some of the issues we have with aggro management got patched out during ShB is disappointing. Games is smoother for sure, but I feel like dumbing things down for optional endgame stuff is moronic design.
They made BLU healing piss-easy too (used to need a bit of coordinating to maintain MP), but at least that was due to new skills instead of fricking up existing ones.
