The engine could really get improvements, fricking 2004 WoW feels better to play. I usually don't want to get my hopes up, so this is obviously never happening.
The engine was never the problem, and the 7.0 PBR integration and new shaders are adequate (though it could use better AA).
The game's main problem are the netcode and client-server architecture. Limitations on character creation, inventory, glamour system, player housing, all derive from that. So does snapshotting, input delay and all the world object interaction limitations that lead to extremely dull quest design.
If they can do a technical release that completely reverse-engineers that botched backend then yes, I can see that improving the game by 3x or 4x and opening up a lot more possibilities for new features.
The main problem is that a technical release like that would always be accompanied by a full scale migration, and data migrations are a fricking nightmare for any live service game. Looking at how the housing lottery bug was handled does not inspire confidence in their capability of pulling off something of that scale without fricking up player data.
The fact the game lacks any anti-cheat and that GMs will ban people who spam good job on PvP before they ban cheaters says it all.
They're lazy and refuse to put any revenue back into the game. XIV's playerbase has basically been conditioned to expect the bare minimum. It's pathetic.
Any anti-cheat would impact the grey area modding community and would cause more players to leave than cheaters in ranked PvP that barely anyone cares about.

You dont even know how Marketboard bots work. They dont use key inputs. They just hook directly into the interface. These things can do the undercut function without being connected to the MB or retainer by remotely accessing the prices to see what needs to be adjusted before touching the retainer. A new race is unironically easier to add at this point than new customization options for existing races.
It has little to do with artist/modeler workload, everything with the character data integer limitations.
How is this a thing? There are 4 faces per race. With 8 races and 2 genders that's 64 faces. The smallest integer you can comfortably use has room for 256 values and the smallest addressable integer has room for 65536. There is no way they have to mask to get the values for character data.
The problem is that it's not a seperate integer. It's a set within the larger character data object. To expand the space that character appearance takes up they need to perform data migration on all character data, and they are extremely risk averse to doing that.

FFXIV's client-serer architecture is entirely oriented towards the physical hardware servers. Every time you zone in somewhere the full character data object gets copied over. The entire thing. And it constantly gets synced and sent to every other player in the zone.

Cloud servers literally only make sense if you can dynamically scale up/down, which requires servers and clients (game engines) that are set up for horizontal scaling, and even then unless you expect wild swings of player counts it would still be cheaper just to overprovision 3x than use shitty fricking cloud servers.

So you get a system where you can't wear anything at any time. And the game bloats up like shit over time because everyones walking around with a 140 inventory.
Your PC loads all of this into memory. So it can pull it out as fast as possible.
This isn't a problem if you're on a good PC, but it's insane if you're on a PS4 or even a PS5.
This servery limits the memory the game has for other useful stuff like graphics, textures, processes.
It's like loading 2 GB in instead of streaming it in intelligently 100 MB at a time.
It much rather take some pop in that honestly wouldn't happen if you have a PS5 because we have the bandwidth and data speed instead of this mess.

Aside from the physics and shaders none of this is "the engine". The game's main problems are all server backend, data systems, packets bitsets and caches. It must be a horrendous example of spaghetti code.
FFXVI uses the same engine as its foundation and doesn't suffer from those problems because it's a single-player game without those backend issues. And some of its improvements are obviously being ported back in the graphical update, like PBR implementation.
But hell, sure, it's "the engine" if you really want that term to denote everything from the graphics to physics to netcode, proxy caches and hardware servers.
If the devs wanted the faster combat from XVI, they could put it in there. But they clearly wont.

Nothing else to add here, completely agree with you. In thousands of hours of playing this game, never once did I feel anything when something dropped or when I upgraded my gear. It was strange, coming from other MMOs where this feeling popped up a lot of times.

I realized a while back that you could completely remove gear and leveling from XIV and basically nothing would change in terms of gameplay. Any sense of "progression" chased by raiders and keeping the crafting market afloat is completely artificial.
They'd honestly be better off just doubling down on glamour outfits and cosmetic rewards and completely removing stats from the equation, so that way every encounter is just scaled to a default and the balance never changes. This is of course a dogshit way to run an MMO, but it would better serve how XIV is already designed.
Completely agree, would be more honest than the current illusion of customization there is. You could remove every stat from your character and change it for a single stat ITEM LEVEL which increases as you do more content and then leave all the gear as cosmetics, as you said, wouldn't change a thing in the game.

Minfilia has more to her but basically the same, Ryne got more characterization in a single expansion plot that Minfilia had from 1.0 to 3.4. Killing Yshtola now would be an insane, unthinkable move but letting her die in 4.0? No one would've really cared either way.

And it feels fricking awful to push your buttons but still get outdps'd by the tabks because you didn't get a single feather in the entire fight.

Making Shoha a cleave would also add some more depth in 2 target fights. Right now your only cleaves are Ogi and Guren. After that and double dotting it's back to single target rotation.
