I was on his team that cleared A4S, and man it felt so weird going back to the time of actually paying attention to the timing of when to push things, managing add movements, and dealing with constant random factors (tethers, orbs, etc). I don't miss it.

Yeah that is my biggest gripe with the setting of FFXIV. Things are either not explained or if they are it's combination of: "aether density", "aether presence", "aether uptake", "aether number nine", "aether flow", "aether coalescence" etc.

If they'd explain anything it'll just be Aether Speak and they'll expect you to just take their word for it.

I'd prefer it not to be a throwaway explanation personally.

Or more specifically define your magical doohikey and keep it consistent. Problem is FFXIV's setting is never consistent.

This was always there, it was just believed to be a property of aether. That's the foundation of primal summoning. What EW added was that it's actually dynamis shaping the aether in response to emotion, and not a function of the aether itself.

They don't need to be full sci-fi to be visibly more advanced than the player nations

Modern day military equipment has nothing to do with what the romans wore, neither in terms of style nor function.
Functionally Garlean armor is probably very different from what Eorzeans wear, but stylistically it's really not that far apart.

The Garlean legatus look itself is obviously very derivative of Darth Vader, whose whole deal is that he looks like an old-timey Samurai but his armor was built using advanced space tech.

We know the city extended a good distance though, based on traveling to Anamnesis. And you saw how far Emet's phantom city stretched on. Amaurot in Utopia is also in America.

The phantom city you walk through was made by Emet-Selch, yeah. But there are genuine ruins from the real city in the Ondo area, and the Anamnesis building you visit was genuine too. He decided to make his phantom city in the same spot.

The whole planet was sundered, so every shard would be an identical copy of the Source at the moment of sundering. Which is why there are any ruins on the First which didn't even exist pre-sundering. If I had to guess, the aetherial density is probably just because they built everything through creation magic, which is essentially summoning.

All of the shards were originally carbon copies of the Source at the time of the Sundering, which included whatever was left of Amaurot and any other Ancient structures. As far as we know and have been told in game, it's unlikely anything from the Ancients' time would still exist on the Source because of all the calamities.

Up until you find out they realised the shit was only happening in locations where the atmospheric aether was thinner. I think it comes down to Uematsu just being way better with instrumentation than Soken really.
He can take the same track and bend it in a variety of cool ways that sound unique each time.
The FF7 main theme itself is mostly just the same passage repeated over and over with different escalating instrumentation.
Meanwhile you'll get Stormblood with Kugane, Othard town, the dungeon boss theme, Shinryu's boss theme and it's like... they kinda sound different, but the music also just sorta sounds the same every time? It's hard to explain really, but it just feels like there's less variety in how the melody's played with - just adding more brass for the battle variations of the song.
Soken's a very melody-focused composer due to his background in rock, so when he's not creating or working with a new melody he can't really add a lot onto it because most of his speciality is already done.
Meanwhile Uematsu is very much focused on layering his productions with a bunch of different elements and flourishes that you can focus on with each listen.
