It's also why like 90% of the game's subsystems feed into the ARR relic grind (including crafting items to use for trade quests), they were showing off all the shit new to FFXIV ARR and giving you a super steep grind since there was nothing else to do. Get ZodiacBuddy and make your life easier if you haven't already.

its pretty much a non issue. quality of life improvement for low level gathering quests. also makes low level materials a snap to gather at cap getting 4-5 per swing
as far as the quality boost for crafted products, very rarely are finished products using materials that aren't processed at least once, excepting things like sand which is just there to make aetherial reduction a thing
I miss Pick Clean for old materials but I get why they shifted it to be more GP and stat-heavy.
It was bound to happen after the ShB crafting reworks turned that entire side of the game into an absolute snoozefest. Requiring HQ inputs to reliably make HQ gear is a decent move back in the other direction.
Gathering has been made more annoying, I'd say its more bot friendly now unfortunately.
The only thing that annoys me about it is I can't spam new craft mat nodes for quantity and sell off the incidental HQs I got to the plebs that needed them.

You can always fool around on a private server but it's such a different experience it's not going to give you much to go on outside the basics of controlling your character and the starting zone.

Some do. But no private server is entirely faithful because there are no snapshots of the game from the old days and a lot of stuff is estimation and guess work.
They try to emulate an older version of the game that was all about having to play with others, lots of struggle, and lots of time investment. As the other anon said
it's not exact but base mechanics are as close as possible to what the game was like. Unfortunately most private servers either do change job design on purpose to rebalance the game or they add in "QoL" features that drastically alter how the game functions compared to what retail was like.
I couldn't recommend playing on one long term but it's not a bad way to get your feet wet, just know that retail is very different, it's very solo focused.
Usually the downside of FFXI private servers is broken quests/cutscenes if you care about that.

ARR used its space efficiently, carving out a shitload of zones from the immediate regions around the cities. Eureka-gays refuse to admit that the problem with Eureka is that FFXIV's entire combat design makes it unbearable. The entire game is built around fighting instanced bosses in a small arena, NOT fighting random mobs in the open world.
It is not, and has never been, and never will be, fun to fight regular enemies in this game. Because it feels unsatisfying as frick to do 10% of your rotation on a mob then they're dead before you got to even use any of your cool abilities which need to be activated via doing half of your rotation. It's ininitely more fun to spam fireball as a mage in vanilla wow than it is to play a lvl 90 BLM figthing with their entire skillset against mobs in the open world.

it kinda had something similar. Except that MVPs where highly coveted for their loot, so the general behavior around them was way far from cooperative.
What I loved about them is that they roam the entire map and could curbstomp you if you weren't careful.

It was but because of echo and Exp buff you’re given it’s faster than before. There’s also a craftable potion that’s cheap that increases Exp and the elemental buff gives bonus Exp gain too.
If you can use a mount from the get go then count your blessings. Because originally it was locked until you finished the zone’s quests.
The only reason I like it now is because I have a Warrior fully maxed out with the gear from doing the raid that basically limit breaks your elemental level, so I’m overpowered now. So I’m farming out the weapons and I’m in Pyros now, need like 4000 crystals.
In summary Anemos and Pagos are a slog because it wasn’t until Pyros where they started experimenting with Logos Actions to make chars stronger and do a variety of actions, and Hydatos eventually let you get gear to limit break your element level and get stronger beyond cap.

FATEs are generally not worth heading to unless they're nearby and you're the FATE's level or higher, as the penalty to contribution for low levels is brutal

The voice is incredibly mediocre, and unfitting in many places. But also, most of the VA work for this minor update felt phoned-in. Even Erenville was missing some of his usual inflections. Wuk was by far the worst tho, and I hope someone slaps that c**t around and makes them try harder.
Their gut reaction is that the voice work is awful, because it is objectively bad even ignoring the fact that it doesn't sound like a woman. However, they're extremely weak to the online scolding they'd get for displaying incorrect opinions online and will quickly fold and praise how stunning and brave the VA is

Retail, private servers are only for people who want to take the game seriously and attempt to experience the hardships and time investment of what the game was like 17 years ago. Retail has been spruced up to allow new players to progress through the game and see the story and world without having any of the hassle of needing to wait around. Not only that but private servers don't include the full game, they barely cover the base game and the first two expansions leaving out over half of the games content.

The whole game is about how Rozarria and Archades are fighting over Dalmasca. You have the Dalmascan princess in your party, and you team up with a Rozarrian representative and an Archades representative. Larsa is kino, personally he was enough for me to care. And then the whole Occurian plotline is about how they want to wield Dalmasca as a weapon.
The funniest part about Fran is that the game slightly punishes you for using her, because the way her stats are spread there's no job/weapon she's the best at. Someone else is always better.

XIV's final arc will conclude with WoL becoming the god emperor of Etheirys. This is a good thing because all the other rulers are useless fricktards who need the WoL to get anything done.

I'm a newbie in terms of FFXIV. What was wrong with the old system?
It got old.
Each job had it's burst on it's own timer and very few of them lined up on a consistent basis throughout the fight, this meant that more often than not you would just send it instead of trying to maximize your damage potential. The 2 minute meta means that your burst lines up more often throughout a fight and you have to put more effort into thinking about how to save resources for the next window.
Ok, what was wrong with each class having its own burst? That it didn't align with other buffs and people hated that? Well that's a bit silly if that was the case.
