More like holy shit. Seriously each expansion following the Warrior of Light and his pals from Sharlayan as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the PS2 imagery, the games only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of particle effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Square Enix vetoed the idea of Tanaka directing the game; they made sure the game would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for their earlier games. Final Fantasy XIV might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Dragon Quest in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the VN was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character died, the author wrote instead that the character was merely incapacitated.

Ishikawa's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Final Fantasy XIV by the same Ion Hazzikostas. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Final Fantasy XIV at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play World of Warcraft." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Final Fantasy XIV" you are, in fact, trained to play World of Warcraft.

You get one waifu and one waifu alone; Alisaie. Maybe some lalas if the devs are merciful. Otherwise you will get some hot female bosses but they'll always die, meanwhile males will always stick around. If we get lucky the downward spiral of XIV will get so bad that YoshiP will have no choice but to force more waifus in the game against fujodev wishes.
This post just makes me laugh after seeing a bunch of Alisaiegays complaining that these patches were just a bunch of WoL/Shtola shipping moments while their waifu just showed up once for moral support.

Alisaie grew up a little after Shadowbringers made her witness horrible things up close, but honestly the Scions are getting to be some of the most exhausting characters at this point. Thancred is two different characters, his flirty early part and his MUH MINFILLIA friendship later self. Urianger went from a mysterious man that could play even ascians for fools to what feels like the comedic nerd character when he isn't espousing how delightful it is to do things with everybody or sad over Moenbryda. Y'shtola hasn't really shifted much besides getting snarkier and more personally concerned for the WoL, and I swear if she does Flow again I'm gonna toss her into the Ronka pit myself. Once Estinien is recruited he is a fricking block of wood with a heart of gold, a proverbial Batman is serious in ridiculous situations. Lyse got completely warped as a character from ditzy bombshell to just plain generic snarky political leader and now may as well not be a main character at all. G'raha also downgraded from the fancy Exarch to his goddamn fanboy catboy fujo bullshit.
The most relevant characters are Alphinaud and Alisaie, who might as well be the secondary protagonists of the story that actually have growth and matter with what they do, but we've basically developed them as much as they reasonably can be developed by this point without a genuine time skip involved. At this point if the Scions are officially disbanded you might as well just make a focus on a new group creep in rather than continue pushing a cast that's now grown mostly static.
Alphinaud hasn't done anything of even the most remote value since HW.
Eulmore was his entire shtick in Shadowbringers, even if it was basically boiling down to "FRICK YOU VAUTHRY"
He literally didn't do anything in Eulmore. Saying out loud what everyone is thinking, including the mute protagonist, isn't a "character moment".

it's undesirable for some jobs to have pvp combos applied to their pve skills, i don't see them doing it unless they stuff the resulting space with more OGCDs and movement abilities

However, consider this theoretical layout for Samurai's main combos:
Button 1: Hakaze, Yukikaze
Button 2: Jinpu, Gekko
Button 3: Shifu, Kasha.
So to get your blue sticker you'd do 11, if you want Gekko you do 122, and Kasha you do 133, and you save up three buttons on your hotbar so they can add something else.

Yeah Monk is the only one I'm really unsure of, but they could simply make the decision of: "Okay, Monk's main gimmick is that it has a weird combo system, so we don't frick with that. Instead, we'll change the ones that don't NEED to have multiple buttons."
So simply, Monk will just have to play differently than other Melees...more or elss like it always has been.
the issue will be if they want to do anything more complicated than 1-2-3, 1-4-5, 1-6 with a job rework or a new job it'll have to be excluded from the system
I mean, other thank Monks what else would you do with combos? Obviously you wouldn't condense Dancer because it has an RNG aspect to it and that's part of the gameplay style, but there's no reason to NOT condense Machinist's 123 combo into one button, for example. It's not like you ever press combos out of order.

Well, that's just solved by giving Jobs more buttons.
Think about it: All jobs with combos would save up at LEAST two buttons, with some even being able to save up 3 like Samurai. It's a gain that is worth having to have more comfy hotbars (especially on controller) and more potential buttons.

D2 and D4 need to do them

With this design they can make specialized tools for each job

Anyone who has done Criterion can tell you that as combat encounters, Crtiterion bosses are really fun, and even the trash is very good by the standards of this game. The problem was and always has been the rewards.
Only criterion boss I didn't like at all was the nue(?) chimera boss in Rokkon, that one was just boring regardless of route

I really, really didn't like any of the criterion bosses, but I am probably not the target demographic for them. I did them with 3 other casual friends that don't do savage and it was a pretty bad experience. Even finishing them was more of a feeling of "Thank god this shit is over" than "Heck yeah that was great!". I guess its cool for the raid crowd but it certainly isn't anything for people who would rather have more Ex trial content.

The entire thing was simply them doing a trial + dungeon storyline a-la The Four Lords, but making it required by putting it into the MSQ and just using plotpoints and characters from FFIV to do it.
Of course, but trial storylines are still cohesive. It feels like a lot of the Golbez story was written on the fly so sometimes they just did things that allowed for a battle and then moved on and hoped you forgot about the details.
