An MMO doesn't need mulitple millions to operate. WoW being enormous has skewed peoples perceptions of what a successful MMO looks like.
Before WoW, the biggest MMO was EQ which at its height had something like 50k players worldwide. That was considered a HUGE playerbase.
Even now OSRS has something like 130k concurrent players and is still in the top 5.

I don't even know how people can stand playing the trial for a prolonged period due to all the features you get locked out of, especially the marketboard and retainer storage. Great way to get trial players to pony up for the full game when they get too frustrated at the limitations at least.
Retainers and market boards are really the only big things you get locked out of and on a new account you can pretty much just ignore all that shit anyway. There's still a metric frickton of game they just give you for free.

I had fun with FFXIV up to Endwalker. Yoshi-p should've just axed the game after 6.0 for all I care. MMORPG is a dead genre. Overmonetized, over "live-serviced", ruined by greed.
The perfect payment model was and always will be b2p + sub, NO cash shops, NO microtransactions, NO battle passes - nothing. The genre died the moment some dumb corporate frick said "people will buy optional cosmetics" and some equally moronic fanboy said "that's fine, it's OPTIONAL and only COSMETIC", forgetting people have put tens or hundreds of hours trying to get some cosmetic shit in games (Invincible? Real talk, why does SE rely so heavily on cutscens to tell a story? Look at pic related, this is how many cutscenes there are JUST IN THE MSQ, not counting side content. This is a video game, it gives you an entirely different method of storytelling from movies or books, yet here SE (as they do with their other games) tries to treat FF like it's an extremely bloated movie.

DRS isn't necessarily difficult, what with all the vets leading fresh progs around, but compared to BA you're gonna need to pull your own weight around since the majority of the difficulty in DRS comes from resolving your own debuffs since there's not much that causes a group wipe compared to BA. Give it a shot though, it's a lotta fun and feels more like the true version of DR compared to how watered down normal is and I say this as someone who completely wrote off doing DRS after finishing BA.

They should heal the same amount but have better damage rotations. Currently all the healing is on the oGCD and my reward for optimal play is to press 21111111
I like the heal checks in savage, but once I've solved my healing puzzle, the fight becomes quite boring.
Here's what they should do: Reduce their total current healing by 40%. Now watch them actually need to press buttons heal.
Healing should be an active thing. You shouldn't be able to press a couple of buttons and heal everyone back to full around you

Shadowbringers' SCH changes were a disappointment and a shitshow all around what with the devs attempting to purge Energy Drain too at first, but I did like Fey Blessing as an additional skill that interacted with the gauge, even if a cost of 10 was basically nothing. It wasn't flawless, but it showed that the devs were thinking about tying more things to the mechanic of spent Aetherflow stacks building a gauge.
And then Endwalker made Fey Blessing a completely free-to-use ability.
I wish AST mains were half as whiny as SCHs, maybe then it wouldn't be in such a shit state.

Modern XIV players really do think like this. They call it "clunk" or "jank".
The problem actually is tanks are too good and they trivialize dungeon content. Run a dungeon as a healer in a 3 dps group, it’ll feel interesting and challenging.
This is why all future MSQ dungeons should be built like Criterions.
Criterions are so half assed. Why go through all the trouble to change literally 1 attack on a boss.

Remove healer role entirely. Make them magical self-healing Tanks instead and increase the number of DPS needed in content.

I love the short-cooldown "parry" moves on DPS like third eye and (pre-frick) riddle of earth, having them on tanks would be great, so long as they can't just parry every auto-attack I guess.

When I think of it, I mentally go to things in the vein of the present Blackest Night, where its usage is effectively a button that rewards usage for repelling high damage at the right time. Getting that one free Edge of Shadow while netting a juicy shield feels fricking great, and popping Blackest Night too early/late and getting nothing feels like pure dogshit, but it definitely helps make DRK feel more dynamic and active in play than the other tanks.
It actually amazes me how the Gold Saucer is so barebones compared to other MMO or MMO-likes. Hell PSO2 has slot machines, blackjack, shooting games, roulette and a few other games to waste time on, almost all of them multi-player capable.

The issue with that tank idea is that you return to the shield swipe dichotomy where some tanks will be dedicated MT and OT. Fixing that means turning all the small cool downs into TBN and well, then you just gave every tank TBN 4 no raisin

Logos actions and Lost actions are such a good idea that they really ought to be expanded into a mechanic in the entire rest of the game's battle content. Random item drops that you can receive every which way and which you can exchange for random abilities in a vast list, that you can equip to get a nice little boost and interesting niche use cases for your job of choice that doesn't impair your base kit that already should be able to clear most normal level content.

It is actually a useful job though. Any time Tomestone events come up, they can farm all that old content faster than any other composition / party make up. So it does have a use / niche. As a big animation gay, I would absolutely main NIN with animations like this. But I also don't really care for modding my game really. When you get to Heavensward. The new Urianger voice actor is still kino so you won't be disappointed.

Has a new data center showing up years later ever been that successful? Everybody just migrates over to the older DCs to do Duty/Party finders so the new servers end up dead for content.
It's never a good idea to do new servers late in a game's life. It always ends with server merges or some kind of sharding system so that low-pop servers can play together and everyone with sense just transfers off to one of the remaining active servers. You can see it happening with WoW Classic right now.
The genre is dying. I dunno why people hold out hope for new releases. Save for the Riot MMO (if it even comes out) there's never going to be another big long-lasting MMO ever again.

I feel like that's starting to happen. There's something happening with the "Vanilla+" pservers like TurtleWoW and Duskhaven, as well as people playing Vanilla on Blizzard's official servers again for some reason, where they are purposefully playing the game leisurely again rather than trying to minmax.
I don't really think it will result in any big changes or a resurgence of the genre but I feel like people are finally getting the message that playing like a sweaty poopsocker is not the way to go.
The first step is just give up on any sort of balance and be up front with your players about this. Not every class will be equal, not every race will be equal not every sex will be equal

Well now the puppeteer is a fricking robot and the NPCs will still complain that you're messing with the theme park if you go off-script. I really can't see how MMOs can replicate being in a natural magic fantasy world during our timespan. Or for the next few generations. The jobs are completely balanced for the game mode they were designed for CC. Frontline is a garbage joke mode. The devs literally just said frick it and threw out role dependent damage reduction. So you have fricking NINs, DRGs and tanks running around with 60% damage reduction on top of their built in shields and mitigation abilities. Frontlines is a joke mode.

You're not gonna get the objective anyways if the DRKs and DRGs are there waiting for you. Pass on the objective and try to bait the them into your team's mob (WAR is great for this). Mark them for the team, throw some DNC/RPR/MNK LBs at them then finish them off with a MCH/NIN.

Its pointless for gathering gear, for crafting it let's you be lazy and just macro 100% hq shit. Without pentamelds, you'll have to actually think a bit or use more hq materials instead of just pressing 2 buttons and having guaranteed success.
Which doesn’t matter anyway because you can either use two macros 1. To hq the alkehest and 2. To hq the tincture. Or two sequential macros to directly hq the tincture.
Still doubles the amount of materia you can extract from your own gear, and that shit is valuable.

You needed to pentameld in 1.0 if you were going to go crafter in Hamlet Defense. Otherwise you would be hard pressed to five step. Less important since then because skill management can do so much for you now.
