PoP was great. LDoN was okay. Everything after LDoN was so bad that it just assisted the player base over to WoW, not to mention all the other competition, like DAoC. EQ's split, failed focus on EQ2 being the next big thing also sealed their fate.

Everquest falling from the top was no where near as embarassing as WoW falling from the top. Like Everquest got superseded by a genuinely better product while WoW is just shitting and farting itself into obscurity.
Additionally Everquest is STILL pumping out yearly expansions while WoW can only manage to pump out yearly patches.
The key difference is everquest greybeards were like "well we had a good run, hope we get a sequel someday".

Everquest was never big. WoW was one of the biggest normalgay games played by most kids, it was pretty much the fortnite back in the days
WoW has become a game for either UBER casuals or turbo poop sockers. There’s no inbetween. XIV does that inbetween very well with most content being queueable through the duty finder system. WoW ends that system way too early and Blizzard doesn’t seem to understand that LFG manually is annoying. And that’s only talking about PvE content. There’s a ton of other side content to do as well.

The pug content is fair difficulty IMO. There is easy content, and there is hard pug content. As I mentioned, manual LFG content is not enjoyable to a lot of players. Mythic+ in WoW is extremely toxic and there’s a reason tanks are in very short supply in WoW.
And it's all puggable, meaning it isn't hard enough to require people coming together in order to complete it, meaning it fails at it's purpose of being a vehicle for likeminded individuals to seek each other out with a common interest and form relationships

The reason nobody wants to play a fricking tank in M+ is because it's a metaphor for leadership. It's the most difficult job by far, extremely easy to frick up, if you do frick up then the entire key is fricked and if everything is going right then nobody notices.
People play FFXIV because they don't want to do anything difficult. It's easy to be accepted in the community because it's normal to be a troony or an escapist loser and it's easy to be considered a Hardcore Gamer because you must be if you clear all the raid content available in the game.
