1.0 zones look the best because they were designed before the game was for consoles.
Except for a very few exceptions there's basically nothing of them left in the revamped ARR versions of those zones
Some bits of the old tile-based 1.0 maps got kitbashed in (some really noticeable ones in the Shroud especially around the pixie area if you go flying around out of bounds), and of course most of the prop kits got reused
The 3 main cities are probably the biggest chunks of 1.0 actually left in the game.

Passage of Arms is the coolest looking skill in the game and feels like sex to use. I like to flash it right before a bad raid wide to go right back to doing damage but those moments in which you can really channel it really makes the entirety of PLD's job identity.
I also really like Cover and wish it was better, it's already a very rare skill to use, it could at least be a little better like maybe costing less resources or having a cooldown.

A lot of jobs do have suitably big dick ultimate attacks, it's just that most don't feel that way since you use them immediately on the opener. DRG is the one exception since they actually have to wait a while to use Stardiver (which you can bet is going away with the DRG rework).

Cool visuals but potency wise such a letdown. 620 compared to fricking reapers signature move doing 1100. It's stronger to double weave like any other 2 ogcd's so it rarely feels impactful.

ARR dungeons occasionally had side areas that you could go into to fill out your map, but they were all dead ends. There were never anything like actual branching paths leading to completely different ends, and certainly no secret objectives. Dumb motherfricker, shut the frick up. Each hallway you pick at the start splits into two other hallways, and there are also other choices you can make to alter the final boss. Plus a secret objective for a secret final boss. That's a thousand times better than one hallway.

This the ultra casual end and the ultra high end have been catered to but the middle has basically been abandoned the problem with the criterions is that they are way harder than they should be they are at the level of savage if not a bit harder imo and they don't have the rewards for it they should have been entry level midcore content like extremes they needed to have a lot more cosmetics and something to keep people running like the extremes weapons mounts etc. It also wouldn't have hurt to give the variant dungeons a roulette people would be willing to do them for the tomes especially for the relic but they seem to not want to add roulettes for anything just look at rival wings they redid it again for the pvp update from last year and they sent it out to die again all it would take for alot of this one and done content is just to slap together a roulette among the others and people would do them if nothing else for the tomes.

To raid blu content should I look at guides beforehand? I don't know for etiquette when it comes to that
Talking it over helps, but being really familiar with the fight normally is important too. Because it's just BLUs, at any point any BLU would have to do a Tank mechanic.
Also, don't worry about dying. You can clear and get titles while dead.

Variant-/Criterion Dungeons are just one of FFXIV's many "good ideas on paper, but terribly executed". If this Game wouldnt be cursed as a Square Enix title, this Game could easily become one of the best MMORPGs of all time, but not in this Timeline.
Gameplay Quality has just been dropping further and further with every major patch/expansion happening so far since Stormblood, its only a matter of time until this Game too, ends up on the Squeenix Big List of recently failed Games.

Variant is fine. Criterion is just doing nothing with the 4 man format and they just shoved 3 shitty savage fights into it because god knows they have no idea how to do any content other than fricking puzzle fights any more.
Variant's design is just lazy, since it is just the usual Dungeon formula they always use used thrice in one instance, with a NPC that cannot even be harmed and only existing for plot reasons.
If it would end up being something of a proper escort mission, with the NPC frequently drawing aggro (even overriding taunts), it would be at least somewhat interesting, but one can only dream about something like this to ever happen.

I haven't seen anyone who wanted one. It's a thought exercise. The game hasn't changed that much though back then the devs hadn't figured out how to make anything else than some kind of conventional RPG. I'm pointing to the elemental resistances, to the crafting recipes using previously crafted gear, to the weird ass items contained in the misc. section of the market board. Poison potions. Bleed resist rings. Quirky.

I was soloing SB dungeons at 70. Trying to do SB trials or Alexander/Omega was pretty much out of the question though. Should be able to solo Alexander pretty easily now though.
I just started playing and don't think the game looks bad at all, but it does look like a ten-year-old game. The low-res textures and low-polycount models don't bother me nearly as much as the weird-looking lighting.

Stormblood was pretty boring. But the set up for the next expansions has been God tier. Zenos, bumbling around, have a moment of self reflection after almost killing himself, and then reaffirming that he wants nothing more to go back to what he was doing. SB is an anti-endwalker where the MSQ kinda sucks but the patches are really fricking good. Kinda feel like they took the easy way out with Yotsuyu but the set up for ShB is stellar.
That scene where your character confronts Asahi after the yotsuyu fight makes them look more angry than when you killed king Thordan. It was good
I still think of the Gosetsu part of the Yotsuyu fight as one of the best in-fight cinematic moments alongside some of the most popular ones from later trials.

FFXIV is a weird MMO. I played Everquest for 5 years, WoW for 6 years. About a year in SW:TOR (before it went FTP which ruined it). I never "needed a break" from those games. It never felt like a chore. But FFXIV I can do for like 2 months at a time then I need a break.
Like, today, I need to log in and do my Fashion Report, Cactpot, Custom Deliveries, Pandaemonium Anabaseios 9/10/11/12, cap off my Allagan Tomestones of Comedy, Khloe's Journal, and other weekly-timer stuff. And I feel like it's an obligation and have no desire to do so. But if I don't do it, I've wasted a bunch of weekly timers.

constant spam of time-limited content is a design problem. it's bait in the hamster wheel to keep you coming back. it's the same tactic casinos have been using forever to keep you in that hamster wheel. there is nothing good about it.
time-limited content is fine for special events, collaborations, promotions, etc. every few months. but having constant content on timers, like most mobileshit games use, is simply immoral business.
I'm unsubbed right now and the only thing I'm probably missing out on is BLU parties, not some content that's on a timer.
It's funny because I hate that shit too but I feel that's one of the reasons why I like XIV over most other live-service games. The rewards in this game are mostly inconsequential.

Mabinogi is a lot different than every MMO out there. Just because they are both Korean hardly makes them comparable. Mabinogi was and is made to be treated like a Fantasy Life, it's in the logo. Maplestory is a grindan boss killin game. Mabinogi is all about socializing, exploring, slowly growing, and doing all sorts of things. Most players I'd wager don't even run dungeons and focus on the life aspects of the game like crafting, fashion, and collecting.

Hopefully with all their reworks to early content this gets fixed by the time Unreal comes out. They've been redoing a lot of the early gens with voice acting, easier dungeons, less confusing mechanics, etc. They've been constantly making small improvements to the early game. I think they realize it's an issue.

They did say old content that is unused will not be carried over but it's old and unused for a reason. Otherwise all cosmetics will be there, all the skills will be there, all the systems will be there, all the maps and dungeons will be there. Everything will just be prettier and run better.

The game is entirely 100% able to be played for free. There's p2w obviously being a korean game but Mabinogi is not about hitting endgame and there's no pvp to care about. Paying to win is just skipping the journey which is the main meat of the game and the part the players enjoy the most. Endgame is shit, you don't want to be there and as a new player it will take you years of active play to actually get there so p2w really doesn't matter.
Most items obtained through the cash shop are also just sold on the market for in game currency, gold, and most gold is otherwise just used to buy cosmetics.

Straight line dungeons with 3 bosses in circular and square arenas. Repeating textures that look awful close up and from a distance. A lack of vegetation or any detail to the world. Reused assets from other regions. Another story that tries to do what ShadowBringers did. And another Big bad that only the warrior of light can stop but trust me this one is way bigger and way badder. Also 10 more levels that felt the same as the last 10 levels, the earlier levels will feel even worse with more removed skills, classes will be even more homogenized, and female furries will ruin the game further.

The game is by far in it's worst state yet, which is ass considering Bozja was a fairly good evolution of Eureka. All they had to do was iterate on it a little further. The variant dungeons have been a complete flop imo, just the fact that there is very little reward attached to them is a slap in the face. I don't care about relics and their gay sparkles so no comment, but really this could have been incorporated with variant dungeons so just another missed opportunity. Hell I haven't even stepped foot into the 24 mans this expansion yet because I've spent so little time online.
It just seems like this whole expansion has suffered because Yoshi P has been so busy with directing FF16, every piece of content has felt completely detached, like the various developers working on the content have had zero cohesion or collaboration with each other. Hopefully the expansion trailer will turn stuff around now that FF16 is largely out of the way. That being said however, if femhroth don't turn out to be an actual beast race I will personally KyoAni SE myself.
I think what will actually happen is that the CBU3 team that went to XVI will be doing DLC or just moving over to XVII now. Why would SE allocate a huge chunk of resources back to XIV if they've seen that they can totally shit the bed for an expansion and sub count only goes up? Investors don't like spending a lot more money on something if it's already making more and more money as is.

I'm neutral to postive as for me EndWalker post patch has been really good, Alliance raid of the Gods and Myths (but not it being evil and more a test) and Pand raid is exactly what I personally wanted, music as also been incredibly good which is what I like most about FFXIV.

WoW is still strong for a 20 years old mmorpg. Many people seems to forget how old wow is.
I didn't say WoW is dead, but as it is it's in a death spiral stuck with the players they have 5-10 years ago are still the same players they have today. Those players are loyal, but WoW isn't bringing in new people, hence the death spiral. Once these people age out, they families or in a lot of cases die, that's the playerbase of WoW over.
It is almost impossible as a brand new player to get into WoW, even on Classic you try and get slapped down for not knowing content in the game because the people who are most vocal are the lifers, the guys who run guilds, raids, but they also do little to nothing in encouraging new players into the game.

The casuals were the first to start trickling out in Cata because Blizzard heard that Wrath was too easy (Wrath also being the expansion with an extremely vibrant and popular casual raiding scene) and made all the dungeon and raid content in 4.0 punishing and hard. Those casual guilds hit that wall, stopped having fun, and quit. The hardcore players b***h the most but are the most likely to keep playing, instead they pandered to them and neglected the casual player for decades until DF.

The vanilla-TBC base had plenty of casuals in their ranks. Raiding from its inception was always a social activity, a reason to gather a group of people and have something to do a couple nights a week. Hardcoregays are what turned it into a chore that you wanted to get over with as soon as possible because they just wanted every social element of the game stripped out in favor of wiener and ball torture grinds. A world first raider was complaining verbatim that "people don't feel forced to log in anymore" because the game doesn't have soulcrushing infinite grind elements anymore

XIV has basically had free reign for the past two years along with god-tier content and it's still just a small fraction of where WoW was at 15 years ago. It's never going to happen again.

I would argue that subs have already peaked. SE have already stated that XIV was a key property for them and that they were going to continue to invest more money into it. This expansion has simply missed the mark in terms for content.
Nah, I've burnt myself out on XIV numerous times in the past (leveling every job to 60 before the garo event went away, farming out 300 wins for shatter just for the knight of glory title non-stop, etc), this isn't one of those times. None of the content has had any reward behind it.
I think no rewards came from success of ultimates, which also give very limited rewards. So for content that's easier than that, they just assumed people would be just happy to do it, and didn't allocate enough resources into that and now it's locked in. I don't think xvi took anything away from xiv, they just fumbled with their planning and experimentation with new content types.
CBU3 just sucks at giving people meaningful rewards for content, just look at how XVI's sidequests usually drops useless crafting mats

Not really, out of 4 blue mage updates only one had a mount, and it also wasn't cruise chaser for alexander raids, it was morbol for alexander raids, cruise chaser being in mogshop few patches later. It might've been planned as a reward for new blur content, but there is no proof for that to say confidently
I remembered data miners saying that CC was a PvP mount at one point and people get mad about it. This is why I will never fully be any datamining and just wait for the content in the game like a normal person.

There are a lot of people angry that there isn't enough stuff in FFXIV to no life, I mean technically there is like relic weapons, but I get the mentality they want to sit everyday on their one game and space out grinding and doing shit over and over and ffxiv has some of that but it's just not going to be the focus at all.
For me it works as I don't get the intense Fomo feelings I used to get when playing mmo's if I missed out on a week or two, now I'm ok with unsubbing for a month or two and coming back when it's got more stuff in the game.
I play other games, going through all previous FF games at the moment as I always want to understand the references in ff14 beyond what I knew from ffvii and ffix.

As a character herself, Zero is a window into the most paint by numbers GaiaOnline roleplaying characters. She's a senselessly edgy loner who stands in the corner with her arms crossed trying to look mysterious, needing everyone else to come and beg her for her help, oh but she also has a secret heart of gold and actually WANTS to help but she's just so tsundere!
As soon as Zero entered the story, every other character got a hammer to the back of the head. Y'shtola, the most scrutinizing and suspicious person in the cast, instantly trusts Zero. Estinien, another inherently suspicious character, happily moves off to the sideline and becomes completely silent to make room for Zero's story. Vrtra only appears on screen to scream his sister's name. Thancred and Urianger treat Zero like an old friend in need of help for some reason. Alisaie just has to hear Zero says he doesn't like Zenos and suddenly they're the best friends you've ever seen, like that scene in Step Brothers.
And the writing behind her is completely schizophrenic and disjointed. She claims she requires payment to do anything, but has a whole secret base full of weak voidsent she protects for free. She says the Scions have to do her favors to get her favor, while ignoring that she in fact already owes them. She claims not to understand basic concepts like friendship, even as she explains the connection between Farfarello and Ciriatto to you. She claims she doesn't remember how to eat food, but she remembers a random encounter she had with two strangers that took place 10,000 years ago. She claims not to understand comradery, and then another voidsent chides her for turning her back on her fellows. Her memory loss in general is ludicrous because she's not even an actual fricking voidsent, while ACTUAL full voidsent retain personalities and memories from their lives. Speaking of which, she 'just so happened' to fall into the Rift 'somehow' during the Flood of Darkness to allow her to be special.

When we finally get a truly bad expansion (and it will happen), a portion of the playerbase is going to become completely psychotic.
So far each expansion has had more and more players each time so I don’t see how we will ever get a “bad” expansion.
The possibility is always there, and you already have to be huffing severe copium to think the game has been strictly uphill in quality the whole way through. Things change fast.

CC was positively received all around, even this board had nothing but praise for it on release. For all its of faults a vast majority considers it an upgrade to Feast. The real problem is that PvP is still only a side activity at best, even if they were to somehow make the best PvP mode ever made for an mmo it would still be nowhere near important to carry this game on its own.
I guess there's also the matter of cheaters and plugin users, but that's a problem with the game client and lack of good anticheat, not one of the gamemode by itself.
Only thing I feel like should do is add rival wings to the roulette, the mode is great

Exclusives are the big drivers of the cash shop and have slowly become a sizable chunk of it. Cash Shop players tend to be perma-sub'd players who will do events for glamour. The fact that monthly updates are happening for it with exclusive content shows whats the real seller.

Me personally I do not care if the game improves at all. It's fine I like the stagnation, I'm happy with what we have. The game could go into maintenance mode right now and I'd still be happy. Square Enix has done so good with this game already and they deserve all the praise they get. Final Fantasy 14 is what an MMO should be, it is perfection realized. I love it so much. I spend hours just getting lost in the world. Exploring the massive zones with my friends, trying different builds, finding secrets, solving puzzles, writing music, collecting minions, racing chocobos, building my dreamhouse, it's all there. FFXIV has it all. I will never understand the hate and anger people have for Yoshi-p and his team. What they've made is nothing short of a miracle.

I don't want to spoil them for you. Just get out there and start enjoying yourself. Final Fantasy XIV is worth your time and then some. It's a magnificent experience and I love all the little details and care put into every little aspect. There are so many things you can just stumble on and lose yourself in for hours. I've been so immersed exploring that I've quite literally spent an entire real life day just in awe at the things I found.
