I got my P3S clear week 1, it only took me a bit to pick up P4S because every group in PF was pinax prog, even the ones labeled "P2 enrage to clear". There were 100% PFs that had tank spots open specifically to MRD/WAR/DRK/GNB
There's legitimately no reason to stay subbed after you've completed all the current patch content/old content you're interested in.
The devs have said so themselves.
If you've done all the current patch content, what's left for you is to
1. Treat the game like it's Second Life
2. Autistically grind all jobs to 90
3. Autistically grind for achievements/mounts/etc
4. Dress up your character and take screenshots (see 1)
I love the game but not having a long term grind like a relic for nearly a whole year after an expansion launch is just bad design. People need shit to do in order to keep playing.
They changed Lahabrea's dialogue in the new version of the final MSQ dungeon to mesh better with the current storyline. Pre-change his dialogue actually didn't make a ton of sense with what you would later learn about the game's setting.
It's funny how they consistently try to make Lahabread look cool in hindsight.
I can't wait to see the total revision of his character in the Pandemonium questline.
I kinda like when games do that sort of thing. Taking a really old antagonist that maybe was shallow and meaningfless back them and giving them some spotlight to shine.

The only melee job where I would say the DoT needs to be actively managed. Free-form combo system adds a lot of freedom + room for failure since you need to actively choose when to refresh demolish. The same system can cause you to drop the DoT for several GCDs if you choose to burst at the wrong time.

You don't need to play the game to hit lvl 90, you just need to roll your forehead across some buttons in roulettes.
Classes were more interesting when they gave pierce/slashing resistance down and had synergy, and brought unique utility like mana regen. And when resources mattered.

Having more utility would be nice. My favorite tank to play is PLD solely because of cover and passage of arms. Both skills are impractical in optimized runs but frick if it doesn't feel good to shield the entire party from a gigahuge beam or save someone's life (especially if it costs me my own)

They've made so many fricking blunders with job design overall that it's nothing short of a miracle that for every 3ish frickups, they somehow manage to turn it around.
CC proved that they actually KNOW how to make shit unique in play style without going completely off the rails, SGE and new SMN proved that they actually KNOW how to create non-timer based or dot based gameplay and PLD/WAR showed that they can actually shake shit up in a "holy trinity" game without breaking already established roles completely
In the context of XIV its a breath of fresh air anyways compared to how stale and bad PvP used to be and how homogenized PvE jobs are getting.

Yeah, if you prune jobs and make them good at one or two things, that helps make them more distinctive. FFXIV PvP is garbage at it's core though, the job balance and the abundance of CC with no diminishing returns speaks volumes to how incompetent the PvP team actually is.
With how the game is currently designed, I see no way for them to make jobs actually feel unique in PvP without a major combat overhaul honestly.

Neither of them can silence, but I agree that at least on launch WHM and WAR were really strong (haven't played much ranked to form an opinion now).
But I think it is acceptable that on the first iteration there are outliers. They are doing pretty frequent balance updates and I think they're doing a fine job at it. Of course there will be buffs like BLM that go overboard, but I think a constantly shifting metagame is more fun than a stagnant one where the devs are too scared to make buffs or nerfs. Maybe I'd be more pissed if I was going for top 100 or something, but I don't think they should listen to those people anyway.

Their one gimmick in that they are a dive bomber with one of the best CC actions in the game is all they have. If they pick the wrong target or if they get focused down there is frickall they can do
That isn't to say that they aren't strong as frick, they are defiantly up there on the tier list, but they are not so "OP" that they can't be dealt with. Hell, PLD is one of the worst fricking jobs in PvP right now, but they are a stalling GOD, which means that if the enemy team fricks up and lets the PLD do their job then that can tip the scales in a major way for the other team to win

It has CC, decent damage expect from a tank, good support, Cover + Guard fully protects someone and a very good support LB.

PLD barely has enough DMG to put any kind of pressure on people, which means that they will always lose in any scenario where they can't stall until they get backup. Their CC is not any better than any of the other melee jobs, they just have an extra sec attached to it, especially since (believe it or not) CC does have diminishing returns in PvP, which means that this extra sec is always wasted since people just spam their stuns any chance they get.

yeah rpgs with 100% dedicated tanks usually suck ass, i've noticed even D&D will give paladins and barbarians a second attack and some class-flavor things to do (like paladins getting spell slots and an MP pool of free heals) and they're *supposed* to be the game's tanks

You are sort of missing the point of Crystalline Conflict. Roles does not exist in there, only the jobs and their quirks, it's why there is no role queue for it. This means that you have to look at all the jobs in the same light and weigh them all against each other instead of just against other jobs in the same role

There may be no role queues, but I still think the PvP team looks at those jobs within their own roles. Like how PLD is the actual tanky tank, WAR is the CC tank, GNB is supposed to be the DMG tank and DRK is a job. This also applies to other jobs, like the phys ranged, MCH is the damage range, DNC is the support and BRD is mix of support and CC.

My guess is that they ran out of time on testing and that this 1st season (probably 2nd season to) is their QC testing for CC. I mean, the fricking infinite WHM healz bug was left in the game for an almost 2 months, even though they made a fricking blog post about it where they said: >WELP, we know this shit is broken and we've already fixed it in our current internal build. It's fun chasing someone when they're really low and out of recovery options. Two gap closers, a 3s stun, and Confiteor mean you will never escape. But yeah I largely feel like my biggest skill is being really slow at dying.

GNB is a decent drop-in substitute for any of the three roles depending on the availability of the enemy team composition, but being a jack-of-all-trades job reliant on the enemy team for skills to nick he's also not as good at any of them as any of them. You do however make an excellent harrier or annoyance, and Continuation/Hypervelocity lets you get in some sneaky kill confirms.

Yeah I'm sure having the lowest cd LB that nukes and stuns the entire enemy team had nothing to do with it. And you actually had the gall to tell somebody else they hadn't played CC.
Haven't played since they started buffing DNC and GNB, but my take is that the only jobs that they need to go back to the drawing board on is GNB and maybe DNC. GNB's draw and junction mechanic should be the main part of the job they lean into for the skill ceiling, but instead it's just a use-and-forget skill that you only really need to use once per match to get the DPS Junction and that's it. DNC needs a few minor mechanics changes so it can use its dash while channeling the dance, and I think its LB needs to be changed so server ticks don't eat your extended crowd control because the fricking server didn't register your damage until after the 2 second period, but other than that it's not in that bad a spot anymore.
PLD, DRK, SCH, AST, all have great gameplay but they need some minor numbers buffs, that's it. PLD is a defensive god that breaks up assist trains, DRK is a risk-reward reset king, SCH is a fun take on a pvp buff/debuff class, and AST has its dual cast mechanic and its strong spot healing. Conceptually, they're fine.

It has an aoe pull and root as well as a shield it can place on anybody. It has plenty of "tank" abilities, but it's not as defensively focused as PLD and it doesn't have the straight and simple CC that WAR does. That's fine.
Not sure if its had any attention since I last played, but all it really needs is a small CD buff to its salted earth, a numbers tweek to its bloodthirster or whatever the skill that deals more damage as you lose health is, and it'll be in a good spot.

It's LB is completely irrelevant when PLD can just Hallowed Ground in PvP. Salted Earth needing 2 inputs for full value with these garbage servers is dumb. TBN being a DPS loss is an embarrassment. Plunge is a garbage gap closer. Frick, you can't even survive the tornadoes on Cloud Nine with Undead Rebirth.

It's not that it is hard to do anon, it's that its hard to do WELL.
Something that the PvP team has almost managed to achieve with CC. Not only that, but according to YoshiP, the PvP and PvE job design team is one and the same, which means that they very much know how to balance this shit while also making it more unique in play style.
This means that it's not incompetence that is holding these devs back, its something else and as long as it's not incompetence, it can be fixed

Generally happy with both. DRK still feels awakward since, unlike other tanks, you need to rely on your team to stay alive. Since enjoying how your job plays is heavily based on the encounters, it's a bit difficult to just say something is good or bad
I liked P3S add phase and how it had tank movement throughout the fight with boss positioning and tether tank busters
I liked P4S downtimes as PLD since it was interesting to figure rotation for melee downtime and it felt more like playing the game, rather than doing the same rotation every single time
DSR is also very good in pretty much all aspects
I hope the dev team takes more risks and isn't afraid of triggering the hardcore playerbase with stuff like adds on boss fights, forced melee downtime, intermissions etc

Those are all things I enjoy to optimize as a meleegay, there isn't nearly enough of these in savage.

Honestly don't really have an issue here besides what everyone else says about No Mercy window needing a trait to make it longer. I fully expect 7.0 will bring a Continuation to the AoE combo, and I will welcome it.
All in all I like the tanks right now balance wise, but GNB feels like the only one that gets to have a little more skill expression in its combo. I know DRK opener is complicated but after that its faceroll easy. Tanks are not in super short supply, there is no need to try to make them as simple as possible to make more people play then. I'm really hoping 7.0 makes some changes to possibly make the tanks have higher skill ceiling and more personal touch in the way they play. Although I do suspect 7.0 will also bring a new tank job, my guess would be a dual sword tank because people have been asking for that for years. Maybe a tank rework will be bundled in with that.

I don't have a main job. I did main SAM and no, I don't necessarily like the way it plays now. I don't think the class is worse, per se, I just miss BIG DICK MIDARES. Red Mage, Paladin and Sage are the ones I play the most now and I enjoy all 3 a lot. Can't complain. Paladin especially is everything I ever wanted.

I played all the way up to Stormblood and I had the most fun in ARR (before the shitty filler). Precisely because the story wasn't taking itself seriously. It was just Mighty Morphan Magitek Rangers being cheesy and the scions being idiots. I also enjoyed it because of the novelty factor of exploring the world for the first time.
Once you get into Heavensward, they try to go full melodrama and serious. And it just becomes boring. But this is where people claim it "gets good." You also don't have the novelty factor of exploring. By then, you notice the MMO formula and you just keep repeating the same 4-5 MMO quests with different NPC triggers. And it doesn't help that most of Heavensward is in a fricking barren snowfield or similar looking floating continents.
My experience was the opposite because I feel only past ARR do the areas start being more fantastic and Final Fantasy-y rather than how mundane and uninteresting La Noscea, Thanalan and Black Shroud are to me. Coerthas was the only cool ARR area with cool quests to it, while at the same time Heavensward quite toned down the uncompromising fundamentalism of Ishgard and made the society as a whole far less approachable and less dogmatic than Coerthas painted it as, which made the story of the expansion a bit less interesting.
But I just couldn't for the life of me remember a single thing about what the story of the game was supposed to be before you fight Garuda.

You'll find FFXIV players don't really "get" environmental storytelling. It's why all of their raids are identical circular with flashing pink floyd lasers all over the place. It's not meant to be immersive, it's meant to be arcadey.
I mean, yeah. Teleporting to floating circular arenas isn't immersive, it's arcadey design. FFXIV is more of a collection of game modes than a cohesive RPG.

I should probably ask in the FF14 general but how hard/easy is it to level different jobs while going through MSQ?
I started as a lancer/dragoon and i'm about to hit 50 but it's boring as frick so far so i'm going to swap to samurai. I'm also really interested in playing dark knight but i don't want to tank dungeons/raids with other players before i'm comfortable so i want to go through them as dps first.
How fricked would i be if i wanted to swap to dark knight later by the time i hit shadowbringers or something?
Pretty easy since the WoWfugee waves made DPS queues pretty good unless you're playing at dead hours (2-9 AM EST). You'll just be running a lot of dungeons or a lot of Palace of the Dead.
Going feet-first into dungeons with tanks is pretty good for getting your bearings, start low at Sastasha and work your way up.

Black Mage is extremely powerful
Summoner can wall off entire areas
Red Mage is extremely powerful but requires stance changes to make the most of it
White Mage is very simple to use, has one of the more powerful LBs and one of the shortest LB waiting times
Scholar can do a deceptive amount of damage and cripple the enemy team without them even really noticing
Paladin can stall matches entirely on its own with smart ability and LB use
Warrior is easily up with DPS jobs for actual damage capabilities and better than Gunbreaker and Dark Knight for survivability
Monk is an excellent duelist and its LB can ignore Guard
Ninja can turn matches easily with one-by-one LB chains and can hold its own in a fight
There is no tier list because your team's competency matters far, far more than your actual job and you WILL NOT solo carry a match. People that think any job can solo carry a match aren't doing so much better than the rest of their team that they think they are, the only job that can approach a solo carry is Paladin and that's only with LB
AST is better than WHM. Way better healing and utility, and Gravity is basically WHM LB lite as a normal ability and gets way more value across a full round.

And I hated every second of that, I don't think complexity is a replacement for quality. I would much rather play the current iteration of Summoner and the AI for Bahamut/Phoenix was indefensible.

That's the thing, too, SMN's current incarnation is basically the same shit but with no DoTs. Enkindle was changed to always activate on an egi's summoning, you have reasons to summon more than one egi, and the egi casts like Crimson Cyclone were off-loaded onto You, The Summoner, in addition to their cooldown being tied to the egi's summoning. >the current fisher price version is not worth "no DoTs" and frick you for implying it is.

No, I am fine with DoTs, I am only saying that the removal of DoTs doesn't need to mean just overall removal of everything down to the most bare bones of a job. Ruin IV already existed and was a resource to manage one cast every great while is not adding anything or supplementing what was taken. Considering what changed from SMN and the plugin's development date, I imagine if SMN hadn't changed much it still would have had one. It was not much more complex than it is now, the vast majority of its complexity was in managing pet jank.

Jesus Christ, yes. I've had all party effects on since ARR, but switched them off just from the extra sparkles this expansion added, with SMNs especially. Doing P2 for the first time with SMNs in the party meant the bird's tells (fiery orbs) were difficult to discern from the fiery orbs of the Ifrits. I'm glad as frick that my current static doesn't have a SMN.

The new solo duties of Rhitathyn and Lahabread were extremely fun and epic with multiple phases, did them recently on pic related alt.

They changed Lahabrea's dialogue in the new version of the final MSQ dungeon to mesh better with the current storyline. Pre-change his dialogue actually didn't make a ton of sense with what you would later learn about the game's setting.
It's funny how they consistently try to make Lahabread look cool in hindsight.
I can't wait to see the total revision of his character in the Pandemonium questline.

No I get it, I'm familiar with the discord callout server for hunts and shit like that, I am just maybe poorly trying to convey that this shit defeats the purposes of these MMOs to begin with. It's not about the content of the game, it's about the relationships built with other people inside the game. The only melee job where I would say the DoT needs to be actively managed. Free-form combo system adds a lot of freedom + room for failure since you need to actively choose when to refresh demolish. The same system can cause you to drop the DoT for several GCDs if you choose to burst at the wrong time.

You don't need to play the game to hit lvl 90, you just need to roll your forehead across some buttons in roulettes.
Classes were more interesting when they gave pierce/slashing resistance down and had synergy, and brought unique utility like mana regen. And when resources mattered.

Having more utility would be nice. My favorite tank to play is PLD solely because of cover and passage of arms. Both skills are impractical in optimized runs but frick if it doesn't feel good to shield the entire party from a gigahuge beam or save someone's life (especially if it costs me my own)

I was about to say "frick no" but then the memories of the first week in CC came back to me.
They've made so many fricking blunders with job design overall that it's nothing short of a miracle that for every 3ish frickups, they somehow manage to turn it around.
CC proved that they actually KNOW how to make shit unique in play style without going completely off the rails, SGE and new SMN proved that they actually KNOW how to create non-timer based or dot based gameplay and PLD/WAR showed that they can actually shake shit up in a "holy trinity" game without breaking already established roles completely
My hope is their PVP changes are a hint at the direction they want to take jobs in PVE.

In the context of XIV its a breath of fresh air anyways compared to how stale and bad PvP used to be and how homogenized PvE jobs are getting.
Yeah, if you prune jobs and make them good at one or two things, that helps make them more distinctive. FFXIV PvP is garbage at it's core though, the job balance and the abundance of CC with no diminishing returns speaks volumes to how incompetent the PvP team actually is.
With how the game is currently designed, I see no way for them to make jobs actually feel unique in PvP without a major combat overhaul honestly.

WAR and WHM are literally the "Do all" of the pvp. They stun, silence, heal, support AND deals damage.
Neither of them can silence, but I agree that at least on launch WHM and WAR were really strong (haven't played much ranked to form an opinion now).
But I think it is acceptable that on the first iteration there are outliers. They are doing pretty frequent balance updates and I think they're doing a fine job at it. Of course there will be buffs like BLM that go overboard, but I think a constantly shifting metagame is more fun than a stagnant one where the devs are too scared to make buffs or nerfs. Maybe I'd be more pissed if I was going for top 100 or something, but I don't think they should listen to those people anyway.

Hell, PLD is one of the worst fricking jobs in PvP right now, but they are a stalling GOD, which means that if the enemy team fricks up and lets the PLD do their job then that can tip the scales in a major way for the other team to win

It has CC, decent damage expect from a tank, good support, Cover + Guard fully protects someone and a very good support LB.

PLD barely has enough DMG to put any kind of pressure on people, which means that they will always lose in any scenario where they can't stall until they get backup. Their CC is not any better than any of the other melee jobs, they just have an extra sec attached to it, especially since (believe it or not) CC does have diminishing returns in PvP, which means that this extra sec is always wasted since people just spam their stuns any chance they get.

You are sort of missing the point of Crystalline Conflict. Roles does not exist in there, only the jobs and their quirks, it's why there is no role queue for it. This means that you have to look at all the jobs in the same light and weigh them all against each other instead of just against other jobs in the same role

There may be no role queues, but I still think the PvP team looks at those jobs within their own roles. Like how PLD is the actual tanky tank, WAR is the CC tank, GNB is supposed to be the DMG tank and DRK is a job. This also applies to other jobs, like the phys ranged, MCH is the damage range, DNC is the support and BRD is mix of support and CC.

People who take the hrothgar completely seriously on everything they say are funny, it's INCREDIBLY suspicious that they can trace their racial history back to the time of the Allagans when no other species can do that and it's INCREDIBLY suspicious that they've had mechanized weapons for several thousand years. There's a reason a lot of the Bozja plotline revolved around the Hrothgar account of history being fabricated.
It's the only tank that doesn't put me to sleep, for one.
GNB is a decent drop-in substitute for any of the three roles depending on the availability of the enemy team composition, but being a jack-of-all-trades job reliant on the enemy team for skills to nick he's also not as good at any of them as any of them. You do however make an excellent harrier or annoyance, and Continuation/Hypervelocity lets you get in some sneaky kill confirms.

Haven't played since they started buffing DNC and GNB, but my take is that the only jobs that they need to go back to the drawing board on is GNB and maybe DNC. GNB's draw and junction mechanic should be the main part of the job they lean into for the skill ceiling, but instead it's just a use-and-forget skill that you only really need to use once per match to get the DPS Junction and that's it. DNC needs a few minor mechanics changes so it can use its dash while channeling the dance, and I think its LB needs to be changed so server ticks don't eat your extended crowd control because the fricking server didn't register your damage until after the 2 second period, but other than that it's not in that bad a spot anymore.
PLD, DRK, SCH, AST, all have great gameplay but they need some minor numbers buffs, that's it. PLD is a defensive god that breaks up assist trains, DRK is a risk-reward reset king, SCH is a fun take on a pvp buff/debuff class, and AST has its dual cast mechanic and its strong spot healing. Conceptually, they're fine.

Not sure if its had any attention since I last played, but all it really needs is a small CD buff to its salted earth, a numbers tweek to its bloodthirster or whatever the skill that deals more damage as you lose health is, and it'll be in a good spot.

I lovei t, regardless the problem with PvP is Recuperate. There is no way to kill someone without chain-stunning because any chip damage you do is just negated.
That is complete bullshit and you know it. All jobs at the very least have a unique gimmick in their limit break, but all of them also play differently and have different goals in the match thanks to how their actions interact within other actions in their kit.
The PvP having a lot of crowd control does not diminish this and it's not that on it's own that is fricking the PvP mode in the ass, it's their god awful netcode

Generally happy with both. DRK still feels awakward since, unlike other tanks, you need to rely on your team to stay alive. Since enjoying how your job plays is heavily based on the encounters, it's a bit difficult to just say something is good or bad
I liked P3S add phase and how it had tank movement throughout the fight with boss positioning and tether tank busters
I liked P4S downtimes as PLD since it was interesting to figure rotation for melee downtime and it felt more like playing the game, rather than doing the same rotation every single time
DSR is also very good in pretty much all aspects
I hope the dev team takes more risks and isn't afraid of triggering the hardcore playerbase with stuff like adds on boss fights, forced melee downtime, intermissions etc

Honestly don't really have an issue here besides what everyone else says about No Mercy window needing a trait to make it longer. I fully expect 7.0 will bring a Continuation to the AoE combo, and I will welcome it.
All in all I like the tanks right now balance wise, but GNB feels like the only one that gets to have a little more skill expression in its combo. I know DRK opener is complicated but after that its faceroll easy. Tanks are not in super short supply, there is no need to try to make them as simple as possible to make more people play then. I'm really hoping 7.0 makes some changes to possibly make the tanks have higher skill ceiling and more personal touch in the way they play. Although I do suspect 7.0 will also bring a new tank job, my guess would be a dual sword tank because people have been asking for that for years. Maybe a tank rework will be bundled in with that.

Red Mage, Paladin and Sage are the ones I play the most now and I enjoy all 3 a lot. Can't complain. Paladin especially is everything I ever wanted.

Game's story and literally all lore surrounding Dragoon is completely incompatible with this idea until long after you've gotten the job. Think of something else that wasn't responsible for Dragoon being a running gag in XI by being on a two-hour timer.
I play reaper and did so through all of the current raid tier. I really enjoy it. I'm looking forward to what comes next for it in 7.0.

The only thing that's different is that one has a good invuln and a good short CD, and the other has good damage.
PLD plays completely differently since it has a dot to keep up and it can delay or quicken different parts of its combos. DRK and WAR just press 123 until 50 gauge, or hold off for a bit if buffs are coming

I played all the way up to Stormblood and I had the most fun in ARR (before the shitty filler). Precisely because the story wasn't taking itself seriously. It was just Mighty Morphan Magitek Rangers being cheesy and the scions being idiots. I also enjoyed it because of the novelty factor of exploring the world for the first time.
Once you get into Heavensward, they try to go full melodrama and serious. And it just becomes boring. But this is where people claim it "gets good." You also don't have the novelty factor of exploring. By then, you notice the MMO formula and you just keep repeating the same 4-5 MMO quests with different NPC triggers. And it doesn't help that most of Heavensward is in a fricking barren snowfield or similar looking floating continents.
My experience was the opposite because I feel only past ARR do the areas start being more fantastic and Final Fantasy-y rather than how mundane and uninteresting La Noscea, Thanalan and Black Shroud are to me. Coerthas was the only cool ARR area with cool quests to it, while at the same time Heavensward quite toned down the uncompromising fundamentalism of Ishgard and made the society as a whole far less approachable and less dogmatic than Coerthas painted it as, which made the story of the expansion a bit less interesting.
But I just couldn't for the life of me remember a single thing about what the story of the game was supposed to be before you fight Garuda.

They haven't changed shit about it, at best they have "balanced" the jobs a bit better (or separated the two modes into two different branches of the same job actions to make balancing easier for them) so that there isn't another SMN situation in there like there currently is in frontlines

You can level 2 or 3 jobs through MSQ. When EW released I had both SAM and MNK to 90 on MSQ alone.
Pretty easy since the WoWfugee waves made DPS queues pretty good unless you're playing at dead hours (2-9 AM EST). You'll just be running a lot of dungeons or a lot of Palace of the Dead.
Going feet-first into dungeons with tanks is pretty good for getting your bearings, start low at Sastasha and work your way up.

Summoner can wall off entire areas
Red Mage is extremely powerful but requires stance changes to make the most of it
White Mage is very simple to use, has one of the more powerful LBs and one of the shortest LB waiting times
Scholar can do a deceptive amount of damage and cripple the enemy team without them even really noticing
Paladin can stall matches entirely on its own with smart ability and LB use
Warrior is easily up with DPS jobs for actual damage capabilities and better than Gunbreaker and Dark Knight for survivability
Monk is an excellent duelist and its LB can ignore Guard
Ninja can turn matches easily with one-by-one LB chains and can hold its own in a fight
There is no tier list because your team's competency matters far, far more than your actual job and you WILL NOT solo carry a match. People that think any job can solo carry a match aren't doing so much better than the rest of their team that they think they are, the only job that can approach a solo carry is Paladin and that's only with LB
AST is better than WHM. Way better healing and utility, and Gravity is basically WHM LB lite as a normal ability and gets way more value across a full round.

That's the thing, too, SMN's current incarnation is basically the same shit but with no DoTs. Enkindle was changed to always activate on an egi's summoning, you have reasons to summon more than one egi, and the egi casts like Crimson Cyclone were off-loaded onto You, The Summoner, in addition to their cooldown being tied to the egi's summoning.

No, I am fine with DoTs, I am only saying that the removal of DoTs doesn't need to mean just overall removal of everything down to the most bare bones of a job. Ruin IV already existed and was a resource to manage one cast every great while is not adding anything or supplementing what was taken. This, though, this is the problem. This was everybody's problem. DoTs are bones made of foam and their removal didn't impact most of the job's flow. It functions essentially the same as it did before, but without DoTs.

Considering what changed from SMN and the plugin's development date, I imagine if SMN hadn't changed much it still would have had one. It was not much more complex than it is now, the vast majority of its complexity was in managing pet jank.

It functions similarly but it plays differently. It is simply unsatisfying to push buttons on. The old SMN rotation wasn't exactly high art, but when your little keyboard piano song gets dropped down to "hot cross buns" you just don't get the same experience

Jesus Christ, yes. I've had all party effects on since ARR, but switched them off just from the extra sparkles this expansion added, with SMNs especially. Doing P2 for the first time with SMNs in the party meant the bird's tells (fiery orbs) were difficult to discern from the fiery orbs of the Ifrits. I'm glad as frick that my current static doesn't have a SMN.
