                The game mentioned by

the combat is really good, best battle system since this game.

? A Tokyo Team dev made the battle system for that game too. And a separate one did the same for 16 under the DMC guy along with 2 14 battle devs.

                >Pic related. Theorygayging assumes all of them have been pulled away from other projects to work on either 7 Rebirth, KH4, or (now confirmed) FF16.

                >But not-Tokyo Team anon's understanding is that the battle system devlopers went to 13 and the level designers went to 14. TTA-san also added:
                >Many Versus devs were asked to work on 13, 14 1.0, and then The Last Remnant around that time. Several Versus assistant directors were even working on Crystal Tools.
                >UPDATE: Versus 13 VFX director Shuichi Sato is also VFX director on 16.

                >Masato Yagi of The Last Remnant said that after TLR got released, he was assigned to the Tokyo Team on Versus afterward. He likely worked on the 2011 build, which only happened because staff was freed up after 13, 14 1.0 and TLR got released in late 2009.

                >There was a much larger collection of developers from KH2 being sorted into CBU1 or 3. I think this is more relevant since it addresses where the big names went like Kanemori, or Abe or Kujiraoka. Even Jun Akiyama. I didn't know an FF12 dev was a Tokyo Team member until TTA-san said all this.
                >UPDATE: Takeo Kujiraoka was sorted into CBU3 along with other many KH2 devs and even KH2 devs that worked on FF15.

                >Tokyo Team anon also missed that Mitsunori Takahashi has also been absent from Nomura projects since he was credited on patents for 7R's battle system. But there is an equal chance he might be working on Rebirth and not 16.

                >For more clues, look at the links between The Last Remnant/7R and KH1/KH2, the 13 games/7R and KH1/KH2, FF14 from 1.0/7R and after to KH1/KH2, Days/coded and NEO/7R, FF11 and KH2/7R, and even FF12 and KH1/7R.

I wonder how much of a success Versus under Nomura could have been but based on the reception people gave 15 until 2019 people really seemed to like what Tabata did.

I like it a lot, stopped doing the story for a bit to work on S ranking the arcade mode levels. I don't really care about the debate on if it is or isn't a proper Final Fantasy, I am just having fun playing it.

My one complaint is getting the hitless medals. I hate that you have to replay the whole level every time to try it with level select. I might just wait until NG+ Final Fantasy mode where I can save right at the door of each boss.

Boss battles are incredible, and anytime I fight literally anything im having a blast but the levels have a bit to be desired for exploration. They looks pretty and have good music and are sized perfectly for what they are but all you get are crafting materials and occasionally an accessory. Many games are like that tho I understand

      Anonymous

I feel like I'm going insane because post second timeskip the game seems to have loads of large maps, but nobody seems to be mentioning them? I have been playing like an autismo tho so maybe I am just very far ahead. But I am pretty happy with the maps and hunts/quests that fill them.

        Anonymous

They're large maps, but they're extremely empty so why does it matter? Honestly they should have removed all the open-areas and focused more on stages (or nothing at all because that would cut down dev time).
As it is, these maps are emptier than Xenoblade 1's infamous Valak Mountains; which gets memed on. Sure they look pretty, but a stage could do the exact same thing.
We could have easily been playing this game 2 years earlier if they removed the shitty exploration and sidequests. In fact, the game would feel more consistent with it.

          Anonymous

I think i'm moronic because I don't feel that way at all. The quests are rather sparse (maybe half a dozen per zone?) but the hunts are my favorite part in the later game. I love running around maps looking for then fighting optional bosses. I killed the first S rank earlier today.

The one point I might agree on is i wish exploration was rewarded better. it sucks to stumble in to a like six enemies and they're guarding wrrite and gil. Tho twice now I have stumbled on fairly powerful enemies that didn't seem to be tied to a quest or hunt and dropped crafting mats, which was cool.

            Anonymous

            Here's the thing...
There's nothing saying that Hunts couldn't be done in a stage selector. Hell, if they did that, we might've even gotten a dozen more because all the dev time spent on open areas could be reallocated.

              Anonymous

I think it woulda made the world feel smaller, and looking for them itself is kind of fun. I don't really have a "counterpoint" tho because it's opinions. But I like it how it's done.

I will admit I wish they'd have done more tho. Or introduced them earlier. 20s Clive, in retrospect, is just an extended tutorial.

Shitty fetch quests are far more of a WRPG trope than a JRPG trope. Most JRPGs just have very few sidequests at all.

              Anonymous

JRPG side quests usually tend to be chatter you have to read from random npc in random spots to give hints on where superbosses, items etc are. Chrono Trigger, FF6, FF7 come to mind with that.

I really liked DQ3's mechanic where NPCs would tell you important hints, but if you thought a line of NPC dialogue might be important, you could choose to log it.

As someone who has the game and just beat Bahamut, I also think it's a bit mediocre. The eikon fights are cool but outside of those the game is kinda boring. All of the story dungeons are straight lines and the overworld zones don't have any interesting optional stuff aside from hunts. No optional dungeons or anything. Towns exist technically but are extremely dull and lack character.

Barry won btw. As much as a mess the development of XV was, at least you had a somewhat compelling Christ allegory by the end of it. And it sold 10 million units, XVI will be lucky to break 2, as classic FF games having a good story about the good things in the universe that make life worth living is what made them universally appraised in the first place. The kind of subhuman who loves subversive stories isn't that common either, not common enough to carry this horrible game.

We already know that Nomura was going to turn it into some dumb visual novel style story about what he called the ugly issues of reality, and to make matters worse he said no FF game covered that sort of social relevance. There was that one Eurogamer interview where he said he wanted it to be darker and felt it could be 'more realistic' no one gives a crap about his opinions on global politics and gory whatever.

Except we consistently see the blight spread on maps, and see refugees move to new crystals as they cannot live without it because they aren't used to it. Its the whole reason Cid and Clive-Cid are going around killing mothercrystals, to stop the draining of aether and making people depend on themselves instead of crystals.

            Anonymous

I think what he means is, the Blight conflict is never resolved in favor of killing Ultima. The ending scene leaves everything so ambiguously stated so you have to headcannon every major plot point the game had established, thus denying you from catharsis.

I was doing a bit of an hyperbole, but realistically it will sell 1-3 first week out of the hype, depending on how much the install base eat it up. XV did 5 million first week and 7R 3.5 within the first three days. I think SE's silence is pretty telling, but regardless, since the story is not only bad, but also throws shit all over the series' legacy on purpose, I doubt it'll be able to be a good slow seller like say, NieR Automata was.

Magic sucking up the life essence of the land and making it completely barren and uninhabitable is not climate change.

I was worried at the start but things looked up after Titan. And ended with a resounding bang at the end.

Story wise, it's not perfect. The dialogue really needed some editing, some weird parts were obvious to see just because the good parts are really good. But in terms of the overall spectacle, it ended spectacularly as a Final Fantasy should. Unironically the game needed maybe two more years to flesh out the world and improve on side quests, as well as do some more editing around the dialogue/cutscenes and it woulda been perfect. As of now, it's a solid 8/10 for me, way better than XV/XIII on launch.

Clive's mom is delusional and loves Olivier, so it doesn't matter that he never talks and just plays with his toys. I don't really understand Sylvestre's character other than he's so religious that he's willing to overthrow his son because the astrologers who got bribed told him to. I'm pretty Anabella just convinced him that Olivier having phoenix and bahamut blood was better than Dion only having bahamut blood

Cid has a speech about how you need to destroy the old world to make a new one, and no one will listen to words. So destroying the crystals will both stop the blight, but also allow a new world to be created

            >So destroying the crystals will both stop the blight, but also allow a new world to be created

there's no such a thing as typical FF-ness outside of spectacle and being vaguely RPGs, these games never had all that much in common. spectacle is the real identity of FF

it all began in FF1 with those fantastic sprites and animations, it continued in FF4 with the theatrical drama inspired way of storytelling, FF6 and its amazing set pieces, FF7 with its grandiose plot, FF8 with its even to this day amazingly beautiful FMVs.

spectacle, drama, over the top effects. that and that only is FF. in this respect, FFXVI completely respects what FF is.

however what must also be said that FF hasn't been on the JRPG throne since FFX. and i think people still expect FF to be the non plus ultra for JRPGs, but it has only ever been that on the PS1 and maybe with FFX. before that it wasn't at the top, and after that it wasn't at the top either. spectacle is great, it makes a game very fun to play, but FF doesn't have it in itself to be both spectacular, high budget and high graphics and genuinely deep with an elaborate, soulful story. it doesn't since a long time now. and that's fine.

people think of FF having to be the Zelda of jrpgs, one genre defining masterpiece after another, but that's not what it is and hasn't been for most of its run. it's just a series of good/decent games that look really cool and have spectacular concepts in them. FFXVI lives up to that in a way FFXV really did not. 8/10 game and a return to form, but i do think the game is several steps behind Persona, Dragon Quest and Xenoblade in JRPG excellence

Final Fantasy is about how love is what holds existence together, and about how it traces back to the eternal, thus it gives people the ability to overcome the greatest of tragedies, and even death.
XVI purposefully does everything it can to destroy this because Yoshida is a hack who doesn't understand the core identity of FF, and believes it consists of le reddit references and callbacks to earlier entries.

the real problem is they put a fricking jaded mmo director in charge of overseeing a singleplayer game. Yoshida has been exposed to the ultimate hive of degeneracy for 13 years straight and you really expect him to think to steer the game in any direction that isn't for literal mouthbreathers? he knows the modern normie audience because he's designed a fricking ratcage for them to basedface out at stilted cutscenes for 1000 hours.

he oversees the entirety of CBU3, which includes DQX, FF11, FF14, and FF16. He even outright said he specifically told the developers to tone down the difficulty, he also is the main person budgeting all 3 mmos and they all have to go through him (according to his We Are Vanadiel interview with mitsui).

he currently gives FFXI pennies, and matsui said that they have to schedule meetings with yoshida to allot a time period where someone from the XIV team can come work on XI and then it has to be approved by yoshida because he runs the studio with an iron fist. Even so, the fact that 12 has been pumping out fulfilling content long after it completed all expansions with only scraps to fund it is insane. Maybe that's due to 11 being an MMO with depth as opposed to XIV which actively removes any semblance of depth and longevity so all it's budget goes to one and done spectacles that rarely pay off.

                Anonymous

It also helps that FFXI is vastly cheaper to create content for and to maintain than FFXIV is.
All the new shit in FFXI over the past decade has mostly been reskins of existing content. RoV is the most effort they probably put in which actually has some new story sequences but I believe that's coming to an end soon (if it hasn't ended already).

What are you even talking about. It's well known amongst the FFXI community that without Yoshida backing the game, it would have been killed off long ago. The majority of teams at SE have vast amounts of respect for FFXI.

then why don't they try anything to help them be able to make new content? they can't budget a team to reverse engineer their tools so they can actually release new content and help bring people back to the game? all i see them add is 3 hours of vertical progression every 6 months which keeps pushing the game closer and closer to its death since they keep powercreeping content they add

Because everyone knows FFXI wouldn't survive in the existing MMO market, it has nothing to do with a desire to fund the game. SE knows this and the playerbase knows this. It's like when people always talk about why doesn't SE make a FFXI classic server like WoW did. At most you'd get a few thousand people wanting to play it and then they'll fall off after realizing how time consuming those old MMOs used to be.
I mean hell, even look at Horizon recently that peaked around what, 4-5k players? And has dwindled down to around 1-2k players. That is no where near an incentive for a business to devote the effort and money required to reverse engineer their entire game.
FFXI has survived for the past decades off the people that continue to play it regardless of what they shit out which is why they just provide some new carrots on a stick every now and then. Even the Prime weapons are mostly just grinding and not all the difficult to obtain.
                >keeps pushing the game closer and closer to its death
This isn't a bad thing. Not every game needs to live on forever. I've been of the opinion that FFXI started dying when they released Abyssea years and years ago. FFXI has survived way past it should have had any right to and that's only because they were able to siphon devs off the success of FFXIV. But obviously it's pretty cyclical because I don't think FFXIV would be as successful as it is today without FFXI but I'm a bit biased as a huge FFXI fan.

The game was written in Japanese with Koji helping the writer.

I like how much effort they put into categorising the lore and story for the game. The active lore book and old guy encyclopedia was nice but once the time skip happens and you unlock the current realm overviews, the detailed story breakdowns on the map where you can just refresh what happened between different story points, the character relations with each other during the story etc it makes actually trying to engage with the game a lot more enjoyable compared to some rpgs where you’re just given basic entries and expected to just remember and piece together all the motivations and elements without anything to recall back to.

Maybe if you want to find something specific since you could search for it. He also unlocks some entries whenever you get enough lore to level him up so you’ll want to visit him every once in a while to check but yeah aside from that Ninetales seems a lot more useful.

    >Get Ramuh sword
    >It doesn't have any effect on Ramuh's abilities.
Seriously, was it really that hard to put the same kind of modifiers in the accesories to the weapons and gear? Even the 2 main weapon stats, damage and stagger, they don't do anything minimally interesting with them even tho you could have maybe a weapon that deals more stagger than damage for example, it's just wait for next weapon with bigher number, what is even the point of separating the 2 stats on the weapon if you aren't going to do anything with it? This is not an MMO, people won't chase the meta in fear of being outcast, this is a singleplayer game.

      Anonymous

The RPG mechanics in this game do feel extremely tacked on.
I think they should've moved all the accessory move specific stats to weapons and made the weapon upgrade curve a lot more horizontal instead of straight vertical.
I really don't care about accessories that increase the damage of one move by 10% as it's pretty boring. Slap that on some weapons and let me tweak it for how I play. I should be able to fully customize my existing weapon with added "effects" based off the Eikons that I prefer using. I think it'd be really cool to spend these copious amounts of crafting mats the game throws at me at making specific builds like a sword that focuses on aerial combat, or focuses specifically on garuda abilities, etc.

        Anonymous

Yeah. Imagine if each weapon/armor could have its damage upgraded and had a special effect like the legendary powers in Diablo 4 + a materia slot to add in the accessory effects.
Ramuh sword could have basic attacks apply the shotlock debuff. or perhaps change burning blade into an air juggling chain lightning.

Take all the accessories that are plus 10% damage, -2 second CD etc and throw them into weapons. Just like 7R did. Its an extremely minor type of progress but its something, instead you have tons of useless ass accessories. Who the frick would notice a 2.7 cooldown reduction?

I think FFX has the weapon system I'd like the most as you end up with more horizontal and situational sidegrades instead of simply being "DAMAGE NUMBER BIGGER +2"
It really feels weird having such an intricate combat system with no meaningful RPG mechanics built off of it.
          >no status effects
          >no elemental combos (such as igniting an enemy and using garuda to do bonus damage by fanning the flames)
          >no stats off the Eikons to vary the playstyles
I wish Eikons did more to curb the type of playstyle you prefer but I guess they expect you to be swapping them so often that it wouldn't really make sense? I dunno. I just felt they should've done something similar to summons in FF7R where they change your stats or something. Make having Titan out turn you more into a defensive / blocking type. Make having Garuda turn you more into an evasive / stagger type.

            Anonymous

Ramuh and Shiva are the closest thing to status ailment types in this game.
Also, if all the Eikons just scaled off a specific stat, it would be a bit limiting in some regard. At best you'd have to scale some off strength and some off magic.

As much as I dislike XVI I'd have to disagree. The tales series overall writing is generally far, far worse between stuff like Tales of Graces and Tales of Arise. What they do better though is actually incorporating the party as part of the adventure which XVI does almost zero of.

Tales has or rather had better character writing compared to FF thanks to skits fleshing them out.
16's core plot is still better than Arise from what I've played so far although relegating the majority of the characterization and shit to sidequests that barely anyone wants to play was idiocy especially when you consider their choices for the plot relevant ones. Why the frick was the feeding the bearers in Oriflamme or the crystal smuggling thing a sidequest and they put the quest where you have to go find some girl's stalker a main one?
The majority of the mechanics also work on bosses unlike Arise where the combat practically shuts down and devolves into spam Alphen's break to keep them under control.

          >Tales has or rather had better character writing compared to FF thanks to skits fleshing them out.
More writing doesn't always equal better writing. The general quality of writing in Tales games is pretty poor. It's very standard anime tropes like what you'd see out of all those 6/10 animes that come out every season. I say this as a Tales fan that generally enjoys the campiness of the games. I just wouldn't ever argue that the writing is all that good.

Notice that I said character writing and not overall writing. The characters are one of the few things that Tales of had over its counterparts because they put in the effort for the player to learn about them instead of just the MC and whoever it is that SE wanted to shill.

              >Notice that I said character writing
I know you did and I still stand by my original point.
You have skits with overall more character interaction but that doesn't mean the quality of the writing is better.
              >because they put in the effort for the player to learn about them
Again, not always does more writing mean better writing. Take Arise for example. Outside of Alphen and Kisara, the other characters barely get expanded upon outside their tropes that they're based off of. Dohalim barely even feels like a character compared to them. Law and Shionne are briefly touched upon but it's mostly one or two cutscenes each depicting their backstory.
Skits are cute, sure, and they add character. But I wouldn't really call it really good writing compared to anything else.

The combat has depth and is fun but rest of the game feels shallow. Also, MMO errands are ass when it happens in the side quests, and it's triple ass when they force me to do them in the main story missions.
They really should have trimmed the fat from the main story missions.

I don't mind slowing the pacing down, like after a 30m Titan sequence, but atleast make the stuff you do interesting. The Mid stuff with her ship was such a slog.

To be fair, a lot of times elemental resistances are lazily implemented and all of the relevant endgame enemies are neutral or resist everything anyway.
I'd only really be interested in an elemental system in an ARPG if it made enemies react and vary themselves based on what element you tagged them with. Such as the pirates in KH2 for example.
The issue in FF16 is more that its a game that should be designed around horizontal progression and skill expression by having gear that available that benefits whatever arbitrary style that the player decides to do. For example, a build that's focused around Heatwave/Rook's Gambit/etc or a Titan focused loadout with more damage and reduced CDs, etc

Nah the Bahamut stuff is the peak, you just have to suffer through some Mid fetch quests to get there

        Then he's lazy or incompetent

Nah I think he comes from an MMO perspective where if you do have these things, it changes who you bring or how you gear up. Okay this is an ice enemy, so if you don't have frost resistance the fight is near impossible. If you have it, the fight is trivial. How is this good design either way? Or the reverse, where enemies are weak to certain things so you fill out a party to capitalize on it and leave others to do nothing. I think X sorta solved this with instant swaps, the characters comes in still taking a full turn, and then you can design fights around everything.
Player characters just need their own weakness, then along comes Persona to do it.

I really wish more thought went into chest rewards. Clearing 10 enemies to get to a random chest that has 25 gil in it feels like absolute shit.
I think I'm about 20-30 hours in and I've probably only found 3 chests with actual equipment in them. The game really needs more exciting incentives for exploration.

Hunts are cool, but drip feeding them in feels bad. I would've loved to run across Atlas as an example the first time I went into that area and just have him push my shit in. Instead you have to wait for specific points in the story when they decide to just spawn them there.

I don't understand the complaints about side quests. People keep memeing that they're "MMO quests" but I can't recall a game with side quests that weren't. They're always low effort fetch quests and I don't really care about that. What I do enjoy is they add a lot of character to some of the side characters like hearing about Otto's past with Cid. Also seeing evolution of characters through time skips has been pretty cool.

Do people still think shimmy walls are load screens? You can teleport from Rosalith's map and its unique assets, to the Empire in like 2 seconds of black screen. Rosalith->Empire->Hideaway->Dhalmek area is probably a total of 15 seconds of black screen loading.

I have simply posted an accurate old pasta regarding the poor quality of side quests to come.

            >shimmy walls
I know this may come off as a shill comment, but I actively like how quick the shimmies are in this game.
Going through a small slit in a wall or shimmying across a ledge is super fast compared to these other Sony titles where it takes for fricking ever. FF7R was really bad with this, so many of these god damn sections that take like 30+ seconds

After typing this I realize how pathetic of a praise this is, but I really do appreciate it.

      > You want kino boss fight? Fetch me 100 chicken legs, kill 40 dogs in the forest and give me a cunnilingus first, slave!

I don't mind slowing pacing down, but killing it entirely is wild to me. Like one of those tasks should have sufficed, not doing 3 of them.

        >Time to pick my mission
        >Select Blue Icon of Exploration
        >Objective: Collect 2 Rabbit Furs
        >Use 1,000 hit combo
        >5% damage on 1 rabbit
        >Hmmm....Better limit break just in case
        >Rabbit eventually dies after 15 minutes and 2 attacks towards the player
        >1 fur obtained!
        >Quest marker updates
        >Ok time to go through the shimmy wall
        >Wait 15 seconds to shimmy "NOT LOAD"
        >Follow Blue Marker to next rabbit
        >Now this is KINO
        Everyone was warned.

I'm fine with it actually. It's like edging when I want to jack off but ended up playing a dlsite hentai game for 4 hours.

The game need more moments of Clive just chatting with various party members
    >more random conversations with Jill
    >more random conversations with Byron
    >etc.
I love Clive's random remarks to Torgal but they're just too far and few between.

He's the best, I like how Clive never seems particularly bothered by him acting like a clown and instead enjoys the company. It's a stark difference to how dour he is all the time with Jill.

I like FFXVI, but Jill fricking sucks. Complete jobber, even as Shiva. Jill's design sucks too. There are better looking NPCs than her. Her VA sucks too.
