Beat him first try on my first playthrough while playing on Hard, the only thing that surprised me was Andalucia. Dante on the other hand teared me a new one with his ridiculous amount of crits.

Absolute joy of a game, playing through it right now for the first time on hard and having a blast.

    >play through the first tutorial dungeon
    >it's complete RNG whether you make it through the first section of enemies or not
Dropped it right then and there. If a game relies on grinding or RNG (especially in a bloody tutorial dungeon) then it's not a very good game.

I'm sure you are joking as that is a realistic outcome and often a well known fact about hard mode but I find the idea funny that someone could literally get filtered like such when they choose to play in hard mode. Too much of a b***h to keep going but too "hardcore" to just play on normal. Well if there was ever a game to be an edgy b***h on though this would totally be it. Digital Devil is a better game, more accessible but ironically also harder in some spots though more so on the 2nd disk though Demi-fiend on the 1st disk is always a noteworthy thing even when abusing the AI want to debuff you.

I am, sadly, not joking. I went into the the game completely blind, without knowing anything about the opening section, expecting a game where proper strategy can help you defeat all the fights in the game. I want my RPGs to be deterministic - if I prepare well enough and use the right strategy then I should be able to beat the enemy 100% of the time. Difficulty should come from game knowledge and preparation (proper gear, companions, using the correct skills) not hoping that the RNG is on your side.
Dying like 3 times in a row due to unlucky crits/dodges without being able to adjust your team/gear/choose a different path successfully dissuaded me from playing this game.
Might give DDS a go one of these days though.

you are literally describing nocturne. just play it on normal mode, hard mode admittedly can be unfair.

            >play it on normal
Hmm, I might bite the bullet and do just that. It's still going to leave a bad taste in my mouth. I dropped MGQ:P for a very similar reason (Paradox difficulty requires either extreme RNG or straight up grinding) and I never managed the will to pick it back up on a lower difficulty despite my love of autistic job systems (Bravely Default on hard is one of my favourite JRPGs, since it's difficult, deterministic and has an extensive job system). We'll see.
I'll probably end up playing through DDS first and then move on to Nocturne if I like it. Does DDS suffer from the same issue as Nocturne?

You could also just stick to it you fricking homosexual. Hard mode is at its hardest at the beginning because you can get bullshitted and die without much input but it also becomes extremely manageable after you get further into the game. Also you're a gay for even getting discouraged early on before any type of build and party comp comes into play.

That's the role of the encounter/difficulty designer to make sure that you can't get fricked over by RNG before you can adjust your options in battle. Having your player die 3 times in a row due to RNG is not the player's fault, it's the developer's.

NTA, or the other anon, but my first experience with the game was on Hard, thinking that I could be able to deal with it since I played the entire EO series. I tolerated the moronic back attacks that caused instant wipes, the Zhen appearing out of nowhere in the overworld and killing me in one turn who knows how many times, Angels instakilling me if they sneezed at me, the dumb Thor gauntlet and even Dante. Then the Labyrinth of Amala came, it was nothing but trying your best to stay alive, and at some point I was about to finish the first Kalpa, I had activated the switch to the next floor and then, all of a sudden, a Sati, a demon who had never appeared until then, spooks me just as I was about to leave to save, gets the first turn, Maragidynes my whole party to death and wipes over half an hour of progress. I switched to Normal there because I just wasn't going to deal with that bullshit anymore.

After beating the game, while searching online I found so many things I was unaware about that the game never properly explained, so it solidified my opinion that Hard really requires either prior knowledge of the game or you already having a planned build and game plan to go through the game without having to suffer through Nocturne's bullshit. Unfortunately, switching to Normal turned the game relatively easy past the mid-game, especially when physical builds are way too strong when they have access to Pierce, Focus and high crit moves.

Hard Mode is actually fun. People threatened me that it was a HECKIN' BALL BUSTER but it actually makes the game difficult but in a fun way where I enjoy the battles again rather than AUTO.
I found DDS to be more difficult

Yea hard mode you kinda have to accept that sometimes shit is unfair. Mot can literally pull out free turns from his ass is a common goto point of it. Kinda need a Kaizo type of mindset and just accept getting pass the bullshit at all is part of the charm. Normal is the intended way to play but hard mode at least in my mind is the "realistic mode", enemies can bullshit you as much as you can bullshit one turn wipe them out. Survival of the fittest. The fact if Demi-Fiend dies whatsoever equal a gameover screen really set the tone for the rest of the game. DDS accessibility are in all of the right places without easing up on the challenge at all. A much better game for challenge runs.

Mot barely does that despite how much the fandom memes about it.
The HD version keeps that behavior intact but the fans spread the rumor that Atlus fixed it.

There's a little more of a story there than V, despite the memes, but it's not story focused nor is the entire franchise honestly, except for a few outliers. DDS1 I think has a fantastic story even when compared to other rpgs. The franchise gets away with pretty bad stories because building your demon team is much more fun than sitting through cutscenes.

It's so funny the reputation this game has because this game casualized the franchise to make it have a broader appeal. Gone is the dungeon crawling, the MC being a human and thus unable to cast magic (most of the time), costs for summoning demons, more divergent routes instead of a quick choice at the end, managing a party...

This game showers you with a lot of good recovery items as long as you open the Full Moon chest at the right time. You could always buy more from the gem store.

I was playing for the first time but got bored at the part where the Ogres will fight you if you talk to them. I don't remember the name all I remember is it's just after that tunnel section with matador.
Should I keep going? The combat is kindof braindead except for the matador fight and I loathe random encounters.
