Do not just fight the boarders. Use your doors to deal with them partially or completely. Upgrading your doors once or even just stationing a guy there will make it so they have to be broken through by enemy crew. Depressurize the room they're in and they either reach your guys with lower HP or outright die on their way depending on the circumstances. Should you not be able to stall them that way you can at least wrangle them into your medbay by depressurizing and forcing them to flee to an oxygenated rooms. Deal with fire much the same way. You are taught this in the tutorial. Use the knowledge and don't be a moron.
Make sure to prioritize your upgrades properly. That second shield bubble in sector 1 was a perfect investment, but don't rush the 4th one when it costs gorillions of dollars that could have gotten you 2 burst lasers mkII that you saw in a shop 3 jumps ago and couldn't buy cause you spent your scrap on the 4th shield bubble.
This should be painfully obvious but just in case you are that oblivious - jump to as many beacons as you can before leaving the sector. You don't get a headstart on the fleet once you travel to another sector and every jump you could have taken but didn't is a lost opportunity to get resources.
Do not accept surrender unless it looks real good or you're desperate for a specific resource it offers. Surrenders usually suck and salvaging shop wrecks is more profitable.
If you want to trivialize the firepower requirements - buy hacking (overall always buy hacking), target shields for hacks, and whenever the enemy has a defense drone ready to shoot it down - just power the hacking system down the moment the defense drone shoots your hacking probe. Defense drones don't have hitscan projectiles so they have to lead their target, and powering down a probe before it reaches the ship stops it dead in its tracks, so the projectile misses it because it expects the probe to keep moving.
Don't forget that depressurizing works way faster if you shut down your oxygen so it's not desperately trying to stall your depressurization efforts by filling in as much oxygen as it can. It takes a while for oxy to reach critical levels on its own so your crew is safe for a long time. Use same logic for power rationing. You don't use your medbay or oxy 100% of the time, same of engines, so you can save up on reactor upgrades by strategically juggling your energy reserves between nonessential systems. The most basic form of this is having 1 less energy for your engines than the max and whenever you're being shot at by a rocket or a nasty salvo - you momentarily depower your oxygen and assign that pip to engines, returning back to oxy once the salvo is over.
Level two shields as soon as possible will mean early sector enemies have a lot of trouble hitting you barring missile weapons, the scrap saved from hull repairs pays itself off
Upgrade doors
Flak I and Burst Laser Mk.2 are the best weapons in the game, get them by any means necessary
If you don't want to spend time figuring things out by yourself play a different game, seriously. FTL is too easy to sreamline and trivialize if you know what you're doing
To defend against boarders you need to understand how the doors subsystem works >level 0 (starting): doors do not stop boarders at all, they can just walk through >level 1: boarders have to break through closed doors >level 2/3: doors get more strength and take longer to break through
When a door is broken through, it stays open for a while (until the boarders leave? Might just be a delay)
And understand that when you place a crew member inside a subsystem, the subsystem automatically gains 1 free level to it (so level 0 doors becomes level 1 if you put a crew member in the doors room)
So basically if you're afraid of boarders, either put a crew member in doors permanently, or buy a level or two of it after you get shields & engines.
Then, as soon as boarders jump onto your ship, pause and see where they are. Your strategy against boarders is to open the outer doors leading to where they are, so that all the oxygen leaves and they start to suffocate. Have your crew in the affected rooms run through to safety (the enemy can't follow them through doors so long as you don't manually open the doors). Because your doors are at least level 1, the enemy can't just walk through to escape, they have to break down a door, so they suffocate and take damage the whole time. If they get through then whatever room they go into will also lose oxygen. AI will always teleport its boarders back if they get too low on health (if their teleporter comes off cooldown) so you don't actually need to kill them, just let them suffocate until they leave, then close all the doors (use the button on the doors icon) and return your crew to their stations.
Also, if you're not playing on Easy you will never finish the game, you should play on Easy until you can beat the game reliably with most/all ships - this isn't a game where easymode = gay
More respect to you though because you sound mature and have the ability to self introspect, try it dude it's one of the best games ever made, play on easy. Easy is basically any other games normal. And normal is hard and hard is nightmare.
That ain't the most worthless mothab***h otherwise known as Stealth B. HOLY SHIT do I hate stealth fricking b. Why the FRICK are you going to design a shieldless fricking ship with a 20s charge time fricking weapon? Max stealth ain't enough to shoot this b***h let alone the piddly starter cloak. A blind, half-moronic, full-catholic fricking monkey could beat that thing with a medieval fricking MUSKET. Not even like an actual gun but those things that were basically little mortars on the ends of poles. I could beat stealth fricking B with my stealth fricking DICK EVEN THOUGH HE'S DESENSITIZED DUE TO A SLEW OF STRANGE FETISHES. FRICK
Tell that to fricking minibeam you b***h. 7 second charge time, five second cloak. That adds up to less than 20, and guess what? Minibeam doesn't miss. You can literally end up on the frickking spotlight of some dumbass little drone's mlg noscope montage with absolutely no chance of counter play because of Stealth fricking B. Even at max cloak you get 15 seconds of cloak which is at best enough to dodge 1 volley before getting utterly FRICKED. I know what the frick I'm doing. I can beat a fricking drone with a fire beam better than stealth b can not shit it's own ass with incompetence
you shouldn't do that on stealth B, your evasion is still low after cloaking because of the garbage starting engines. you should buy cloaking level 3 and precloak.
Yes. for a low attention span ADHD monkey like me, games like these just don't seem like they're worth the hassle of getting good. Feels like work. If I'm gonna spend hours essentially solving puzzles I'd rather just grind leetcode.
FTL is one of the most fun games I've ever played, I'd sacrifice all of Ganker and honestly 95% of normies on the internet for a sequel. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
If you're particulalry desperate - there's a mod called Multiverse. The redditgay writing causes me physical harm but at least there are many more ships and guns and mechanics. Not as good or fine tuned as original FTL, but maybe it can scratch the itch.
My last run I used a rebel cruiser with an augment that nukes the stats of your alien crew but boosts humans by 30%, and I also had an augment that boosts human stats by 15% for every other human in the room (stacks), plus a 4man teleporter. I was the 4th Reich's fricking Pride with that thing.
>The redditgay writing causes me physical harm
If that's the only problem and you're as big of an FTL fan as you are couldn't you just edit the text you don't like?
It doesn't seem so hard
Have you seen the mod? It's like if someone tried to write a leftist meme where every letter itself is a leftist meme.
And besides, if I wanted to make my own writing from scratch - I'd make my own mod. Or better yet, my own videogame. Kind of a silly thing to suggest, anon, honestly.
Not really there's a world of difference between modifying a mod, making one your own and a full fledged game. Take the opportunities for practice where you can.
For real, lad, if I'm gonna put genuine thought and effort into writing characters and worldbuilding and dialog and events for a total conversion mod - it might as well be a genuine passion project of my own / my friends that I'd participate in out of faith in it being good. Putting this much effort into getting an offhand passive-aggressive remark from a random troon is more than any troon in existence deserves, let alone a literal who one.

Took me 100 hours to unlock every ship and variant from the base game and I had a blast. Didn't have enough motivation to play more than that though.
Then I saw MV mod and sunk another 100h before I got tired of it. It was still fun though.
I sunk 300 into vanilla because I was mentally ill enough to try to 100% it on Hard. Burned out before I finished.
Not tracking my hours in MV cuz I don't want it staining my vanilla steam copy so I'm running it as a side hoe.
I am an ADHD monkey and I like ftl. You have to switch your attention to different things in combat, you don't need to WAIT much, events are pure text, no gay animations of npc moving to do something, weapon variety is good, but balance sucks.
>build you need to progress through the game is completely different than the build needed to beat the boss >beating the boss is RNG, if your run wasnt lucky enough or you didnt make enough money you're shit out of luck when you get to the boss
>RNG >players that are good at the game have 100+ uninterrupted winstreaks with random ship selection, one of them doesn't even use the pause
You simply should've macromanaged better.
>have the best fricking setup >never lost a single health >about to finish the game >need to go through a nebula sector >goes in >nebula disables 50% of my system >teleportation raid >*dies*
wiener ship is underappreciated. >slowly build up from a weak little laz0r to a vulcan and flak >focus on defense >once you get rolling nothing can stop you
Very fun
There isn't a strategy that's foolproof and you can always be fricked over by RNG. You get three beacons with nothing in them, then you get a super-shielded Zoltan cruiser firing missiles while you're on lvl 2 engine, no cloak or defense drones. This shit happens in sector two it's game over and don't pretend like it isn't. That's the point of the game and makes successful runs all the better, especially OP runs where you pick up a second MKII laser in sector one and blast apart everything.

in a real roguelike i can immediately discern if a threat is too much for me to handle and disengage before things get bad. Disengagement could be a tp scroll or just using something to gain distance quickly. In FTL you're locked into every engagement until your FTL gauge fills so you'll generally eat a volley, putting you in a far worse position than a TP scroll would.
>And you can't in FTL? >In FTL you're locked into every engagement until your FTL gauge fills so you'll generally eat a volley, putting you in a far worse position than a TP scroll would
I still think it's weird how most of the C layouts are either garbage like kestral C or challenge ships like federation/zoltan C, but it also has two of the all around most fun ships in the game, Slug C and Engi C
>run into a ship that has hacking drone, attack drone II, 3 shields, high engine and some lasers >my own hacking drone is destroyed by stray laser RNG >evasion RNG ensures my burst laser II, chain laser and charge laser do 0 hull damage for 3 volleys or 4/7 shots not landed 3 times in a row >eat 47 hull damage, force their surrender and die to a fire proc while repairing because i couldn't find the stray fire fast enough while a nebula shut down my sensors
i hecking love RNG!!! should have simply risk managemented my lasers into hitting more
Pretty sure you can see if a system room is on fire even if you don't have sensors or are in a nebula. The system should have a fire symbol on top and you can see the bar going down. Also it is worth to fricking bail if you notice that a ship will grind you down
>Is this late into the game >No defensive countermeasures like a def drone or a cloak system >Somehow has burst laser 2 and hacking but did not manage to cripple the enemy with the initial salvo before being crippled himself >Had engines so shit that he couldn't disengage >Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems >99.9999999999% had a chance to MACROmanage his overall run better to have optimized his vessel so that it would be prepared for this contingency, instead focuses on that singular encounter as if it takes place in a metaphorical vacuum without prior context of the entire run
Just be better at the game.
>Somehow has burst laser 2 and hacking but did not manage to cripple the enemy with the initial salvo before being crippled himself
yes, a hacking drone was destroyed instantly from a stray laser likely from the attack drone. Yes, RNG exists and the effectiveness of lasers vs 3 shields is completely dependent on dice rolls. Whether or not your hacking drone successfully launches when you're under attack drone barrage is RNG dependent. Every action you make goes through a RNG filter that determines if your choice affected the game state or did nothing. >Had engines so shit that he couldn't disengage
Engines got hit before I could disengage and by the time I could I already had engines and weapons on fire >Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems
That's how I put out most of the fires and with 1 hull left it's either hope the fire puts itself out before a single bar burns out or use crewmen to put out the fire before the bar burns out.
>hurrr it's not a roguelike if I can't immediately escape any threat
You're moronic
>roguelikes are literally risk assessment 99% of the time >FTL doesn't give a frick about your risk assessment ability because you eat a mandatory volley without stealth
Just vent your whole ship moron. Put all your crew in rooms without fire, then just open all doors.
>Just vent your whole ship moron. Put all your crew in rooms without fire, then just open all doors. >dude just hope the fire doesn't doesn't burn a single bar before it goes out
>Buddy, the whole thing about Roguelikes is that they're punishing as hell
casinos are also punishing as hell and no one is calling them roguelikes
>yes, a hacking drone was destroyed instantly from a stray laser likely from the attack drone.
Oh wait, your probe was busted, not your system. Was gonna ask you where your goddamn shields were. In that case - why didn't you deploy another?
Yes, RNG exists and the effectiveness of >lasers vs 3 shields is completely dependent on dice rolls.
Assuming it's the chain laser I'm thinking of, you got a MINIMUM 6 lasers salvo + a hacker drone that effectively gives you an extra 3 guaranteed hits by nuking the shield. I refuse to believe you were fricked out of a hit AT LEAST 6 times in a row without proof. >Whether or not your hacking drone successfully launches when you're under attack drone barrage is RNG dependent.
It is literally not, just don't launch it when the drone is lined up against it's trajectory. Not rocket surgery, man. >Every action you make goes through a RNG filter that determines if your choice affected the game state or did nothing.
Not every action, besides, these games aren't just about positooning and timing, they're also about risk management and contingency planning. If you didn't prepare a contigency plan - you are a chucklefrick. >That's how I put out most of the fires and with 1 hull left it's either hope the fire puts itself out before a single bar burns out or use crewmen to put out the fire before the bar burns out.
I'm sure there were plenty of mishaps that led you into that situation. It's hard to pinpoint every frick up that (you) were responsible for when you are the sole witness and your undetailed testimony is to be taken as gospel. For one, you could've gone as far as depressurizing unimportant rooms right away to speed up critical room oxy draining in a pinch. A fire tile will not break down your system if you depressurize the room right away with oxy unpowered.
>Was gonna ask you where your goddamn shields were
2 shield and 1 got disabled by their hacking drone >Assuming it's the chain laser I'm thinking of, you got a MINIMUM 6 lasers salvo + a hacker drone that effectively gives you an extra 3 guaranteed hits by nuking the shield. I refuse to believe you were fricked out of a hit AT LEAST 6 times in a row without proof.
I literally told you it was 7 lasers vs 3 shield and for THREE salvos I got 0 hits. hacking system was immediately taken out by their first salvo and they got a fire proc on my engine room >they're also about risk management and contingency planning
yeah dude just plan to get good rolls and roll a safe node when you FTL jump
>>Had engines so shit that he couldn't disengage >Engines got hit before I could disengage and by the time I could I already had engines and weapons on fire
engine needs several hits to be destroyed unless you did not upgrade it once >>Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems >That's how I put out most of the fires and with 1 hull left it's either hope the fire puts itself out before a single bar burns out or use crewmen to put out the fire before the bar burns out.
fire only deals hull damage when the system is completly destroyed, did you really not put a single upgrade on engine? its all your fault
>engine needs several hits to be destroyed unless you did not upgrade it once
It doesn't have to be destroyed, it just has to be damaged enough to delay an FTL jump for a player to eat more salvos. >fire only deals hull damage when the system is completly destroyed, did you really not put a single upgrade on engine?
yeah thats why it did damage when the level 1 sensor got destroyed.
I've done three seperate playthroughs of FTL where I beat it with every single ship in the game on hard.
There 100% are unwinnable runs on hard.
There are no unwinnable runs on easy or normal.
If you get your ass beat on those difficulties you're just shit.
>There are no unwinnable runs on easy or normal.
mantis ship first node asteroid field against zoltan ship. leto missile risk managements a hull breach in your shield system, an asteroid nails your pilot seat and contingency plans a hull breach under pilot.
>yeah dude just plan to get good rolls and roll a safe node when you FTL jump
I'm tired of pulling every small detail out of you like a wisdom tooth trying to piece together how exactly you failed at being good, to be honest. There's no seed or save at my disposal and you're just too stubborn to take explanations for why you are bad.
>mantis ship first node asteroid field against zoltan ship. >mantis ship
Which one?
B has a defense drone, so that scenario should never happen since it shoots down asteroids and missiles.
A and C both have an engi, who fixes your shield up real quick.
And if you wait like 20 seconds the asteroids will have shredded their zoltan shield, then you just port over and kill their ass with your mantis.
That's not a RNG run ending jump, that's just an unlucky jump that's deemed an unwinnable encounter by people who don't know how to play the game.

>B has a defense drone, so that scenario should never happen since it shoots down asteroids and missiles
Leto missile in tandem with asteroid. Asteroid eats shot and missile busts drone control + hazard spawn of either fire or breach which mantis can't reasonably repair before several salvos make contact. Getting systems hammered with accurate asteroids and leto missiles at that point ends the run if any spawn more hazards on systems. >And if you wait like 20 seconds the asteroids will have shredded their zoltan shield
nice too bad RNG decided the Zoltan pilot is dodging everything with it's 5% evasion rate or whatever the frick. >A and C both have an engi, who fixes your shield up real quick
In order for node 1 to be unwinnable in that case both the asteroid and leto missile need to hit shields and double breach. Getting systems hammered with accurate asteroids and leto missiles at that point ends the run if any spawn more hazards on systems. >That's not a RNG run ending jump, that's just an unlucky jump that's deemed an unwinnable encounter by people who don't know how to play the game.
You're just getting carried by good RNG and haven't dealt with node 1 hazard on mantis or nebula stealth ship b. typically you just eat so much hull damage you need an event to repair it or the run is trashed. >but muh long range scanners
you can still be surrounded by hazard/nebula nodes and get forced into picking one for your first. better off just restarting

You think Mantis B is bad, Slug C dies to average RNG, not even bad RNG.

>4 tile teleporters are busted
eh, it still takes a buttload of micromanagement. Even in the earlier sectors, since a lot of rooms are two tiles and you can only fight two-on-one at best while your other two borders are kind of useless.
>You know you can damage their systems with your crew?
Sure, but it takes a long time, and you can't attack those systems with your weapons while they're there.
So basically you have to send them to the engines or something, while you focus on the shields and weapons with your own weapons.

If you're asleep at your keyboard sure. Just move into another room if you've punched a hole into a room with a system, that system is already fricked anyway.
>You know you can damage their systems with your crew?
Sure, but it takes a long time, and you can't attack those systems with your weapons while they're there.
So basically you have to send them to the engines or something, while you focus on the shields and weapons with your own weapons.
Just lure their crew with two attackers while the other two disable oxygen/medbay/shields depending on the situation, aim your weapon to either oxygen/medbay/enemy crew and you should have a safe victory. Micromanage your crew so that they don't get hit by your weapons or get a clone bay.
The beginning can be pretty rough. Send one of your crew to sensors to decide if you can board with two crew and try to either get to a pirate sector to find slave traders or buy additional crew if you get unlucky
Unless you use Lanius, you can suffocate your own crew after a battle to have them at full for the next fight. You wont be able to level them up this way, but you don't really have to. It takes longer, but is worth it if your setup relies on boarding with clone bay.
whats Ganker's opinion on multiverse mod? for me the humour can get cringy but the gameplay is much better. i did not saw anything political like others claims here.
I overall really enjoy it. It's the closest thing to an additional expansion or sequel as we will get and the gameplay and music more than make up for the weaker aspects in my opinion.

>Unless you use Lanius
Right, but the original complaint was about both Lanius ships having a clone bay.
I'll admit the bay is way better than i thought after continuing my run that had my Lanius both get replaced with Mantis, since suiciding mantis into literally every ship is kind of fun. Still find it annoying to have to wait 10 seconds every time i want to heal someone before jumping. They could at least make cloning instant when there's no threats around like they do for FTL jump.

Fair point. Teleport is instant as well after fights are over, so might as well.
how do i get better at this game. I was playing it yesterday I got to the last sector with the penis ship and died. I even had cloaking
There cold be a ton of reasons why you lost, but cloaking on its own is not an automatic win. Try to keep it until you see an enemy missile or dangerous laser weapon going off, so you can hit cloaking just before it hits you or while it is still traveling, since hits are calculated the moment projectiles enter your shield area.
Cloaking gives +60% dodge, so you need also some engine upgrades to guarantee invulnerability, but upgrading engines is important either way and a lot of people underestimate its usefulness. Offense can be your best defense to a certain degree, but it all depends on the situation and finding some form of balance.
played it on easy because i couldnt beat normal. going by how few have the achievement for beating the game on normal, i guess im not the only one.
my biggest problem is that you cant just have a good strategy against your enemies and expect for it to work on the boss as well. ive played tons of runs where i would basically just kill the crew before destroying the ship for more loot. i would always wreck shit with anti bio beams, fie beams or that tripple EMP gun. shut down oxygen to suffocate them to death, etc. too bad that strategy will never work against the boss. or is at least way harder to pull off. for one, you have way too many enemies, then you have a lvl 4 shield, try breaking that when you have no missiles and a dinky tripple salvo weapon, be it regular burst or emp doesnt matter, youre not going to get through that shield. your lasers can do frick all when the shield is up but you also need to keep them charged because your attack window for when the shields go down is icredibly small.
i played only one or two runs on the content expansion and i mist say, those oxygen sucking crew members are absolute ass. i dont see their utility. you cant put them together with other mates, they makes rooms inhospitable so they have to be somewhere where no one has to pass through and they dont have any notable advantage. they dont have anything going for them in their favor unless you have an entire crew of them. then theyre bonkers against boarders
well against the boss you could send your crew at shields, eventually they would have killed everybody and destroy it but it would take some time so you would need a giga tank of a ship who somehow has no good weapons
You're supposed to gather weapons on your way. If you're fighting the flagship with just your starting burst II and artemis with zero supplementary offensive options - you fricked up along the way.
Boarding the flagship to death is kind of a fun strategy actually if you can take down the medbay. For one, a PURE boarding vessel is just a self-handicap. And if you have so much as a basic laser plus a boarding setup capable of vanquishing flagship's crew - you are set. Just keep the shields damaged as the AI repairs them constantly ticking damage from the sabotage, and keep the missiles similarly down, or shoot the system. Then as the flagship is about to go down - port your lads back and deal the finishing blow. Even if you are mantis B and literally never bought a weapon (which you should have), if you somehow cleared the crew you can tick sabotage damage as the AI perpetually repairs systems and finish the flagship off with a boardig drone. Overall the problem is that you were expecting to beat the final boss with your starting setup, which very few ships are capable of.
Lanius crew are awesome boarders, and as far as being on your own ship is concerned - can also be good anti boarders depending on your management. There's a cheevo for reaching sector 8 on Lanius ship with minimal oxygen, and that ship only has one oxy-dependant crew. Do the math on how hospitable the rest of that ship outside the oxy crew's toom is going to be towards boarders and fires.
This game is so fricking boring, you spend so much fricking time watching bar fills up, then you encounter a random event and the event is like "do you want to explore the ship?" And you click yes because you want to see what happens and the game goes "whoops, alien spider ate half your crew" and you just groan at getting tricked like an idiot
I have no idea how this game ever got popular other than idiots obsessing over Kickstarter game in order to stick against the evil AAA publisher and idiots obsessing with RP star trek
I've done three seperate playthroughs of FTL where I beat it with every single ship in the game on hard.

Writing is atrocious and makes me violently ill. Sylvan is a literal and figurative homosexual that everyone loves and is afraid of and he's got the bestest coolest ship and a catchphrase and oh my fricking god JUST FRICK OFF ALREADY WHY DID I LET YOU ON MY FRICKING SHIP. Gotta hand it to those frickers though, very few troon modders would have the decency to let me blow their pet OC to smitherines and get an instant gamewinner weapon for doing so.
Gameplay isn't better but there's a lot more of it. It offers more variety of playstyles for sure.
Music is very good. Incredibly faithful yo the style of the vanilla game. Same for most art except those AYCH DEE guns. MSPaint guns in FTL were more soulful.
No trannies so far, but I had some shitty leeches tell me about muh heckin depression or someshit and I told them to frick off. Think they stole a bunch of shit from me.
On the other hand, I just won a run with a turbonazi ship where my human boarders would wipe the floor with suzerains and bishops.
Overall the mod is begrudgingly enjoyed but is on very thing ice for me.
>playing Lanius 2 >buy sensors >get human crew member >get mantis crew member >lose both lanius two an AI ship jumping away because i wasn't paying enough attention >get another mantis crew member
At this point i'm just flying a Mantis 1 ship aren't I?
The main problem I have with this game is the fact that cloaking/hacking are the only consistent ways to win. And when every run becomes "just get cloaking and/or hacking, lol" then the main appeal of the game (variety) evaporates. This concept applies to any other rouge-like, too.
I never said I had trouble with the game, nor did I say I needed hacking/cloaking to win. The problem is that for a game that pushes a repetitive game cycle, it does a poor job of rewarding experimental play styles. Yes, I COULD take a fire beam instead of the cloaking offered in the shop I've reached and 'have fun', but it comes at the cost of knowingly hamstringing myself against the final boss and getting my ass torn open by the rocket spam and super weapon. And if I were to do any kind of run streaking its pretty much get hacking/cloaking or get fricked. Compared to streaking in, say, binding of issac where a bad RNG run can be won, and a streak preserved, with sheer skill alone.
It's why a sequel to FTL with expanded options would be great
Just a little more depth, a few more diverse systems, a little deeper ship / weapons / power control. Not so much that the game changes, just an extra layer of complexity to live or die by
I consistently make it to the final boss, but it's fricking hard when you have DLC content enabled, man.
Still unlocked all the ships, at least.
Frick the giant spider rescue event.
Game got a lot more fun after I learned you can manually backup and restore the save files. Stupid that I have to do that though, put a fricking save/load function in like every other game.
FTL filters no one, though? its like the most intuitive rougelite ever, you know all the parameters after playing once or twice.
it has an extraordinarily good UI
Full Zoltan crew, max reactors, max backup battery. Basically eliminates energy micromanagement, you'll always have enough power to run all your systems.
>Rock bros want to have an endurance contest near a sun >they also try to shoot you down >somehow i'm the bad guy for killing their whole crew and looting what's left
who writes this shit?
>You feel a twinge of guilt
It's in the text box. Like, no i fricking don't. Don't fire on me if you don't want me to warp in mantises and bomb your healing bay.
>favourite playstyle is starting fires on every room in every enemy spaceship ever >drones and "heh good luck getting past my 10 shields" ships frick me right over erry tiem
i mean it makes sense, but i wish there was an alternative that wasn't wasting missiles on fire bombs.
me neither, but i can appreciate the sheer butthurt seething every crewmember on board an enemy vessel must be when i send in two crystal men and more straight into their weapons/shield room, crystallize the doors and wreck havoc at my own leisure.
Watching their entire crew congregate fire on one door while every room behind them fills up with fire and smoke, only for me to beam the boarding crew out just as they break down the door? absolutely fantastic. best fun i had in ages
and then i have 5 runs in a row with dogshit RNG and uninstall the game again
>whole game is trivial as frick >the only difficulty comes from the rebel flagship >you have to do wank shit for an hour before you fight the flagship
shit game balance
>accidentally kill the entire crew of the final ship >it's not actually that bad, just leave one dude in each turret room and the weapons will still stay broken forever.
that's what i normally do, but i had forgotten which gun turret was best to leave a guy in and accidentally killed both of the two that don't get killed by the phase changes.
It's fun but there's almost too much emphasis on RNG and not on tactics or skill. Also some weapons and systems are impractical or just straight up inviable at harder difficulties. You almost have to take Cloaking and get any multishot weapon if you want to have a good chance at late game.
Even on hard with enough skill you can make up for RNG to the point where your chances to lose and it being 100% not your fault are one to a million. I'll agree that it's not balanced in a particularly stellar manner though, especially om hard, which necessitates such a careful and optimal playstyle that it makes a roguelike formulaic.
Overall hard is a challenging, fair dificulty, but it's dogshit because it jusr gimps playstyle variety. Only reason I ever played hard was because the achievement tracker makes me SEETHE over seeing everything be marked as "achieved on NORMAL".
game fricking sucks, I dont understand why you people like it so much. or maybe I just dont like rougelikes, where you have to retry every 30 minutes because that's when the wall appears
I kinda wish there was an actually properly supported sandbox game like FTL. I made do kinda with Convoy but it's still a game that's all about playthroughs and reaching a finish line. There was a neat little mobile game called pixel starships that was kinda that but it was a mobile game with gacha shit and other garbage.
is it just me that never buys cloak? i always go for mind control/drones and hacking. mind control is for reducing the evasion when shooting my guns at enemy, drones for defense against rockets and hack for shields
Thought this was the Skeld from the thumbnail. I have to kill myself
what's skeld
Among us spaceship map
Is that among us
amogus
ur late like 10 years
God forbid people talk about any games not made in the current year on the games board.
I litearlly do not understand this fricking game, I always get raided by 8 dudes and die, everything is so expensive too
let me guess, you beat sekiro and elden ring?
yes...?
Samegays always make themselves so obvious
i've beaten both of those games and FTL many times, fricker
I have every achievement for both sekiro and ftl on steam and sekiro is way harder
>MUH CHEEVOS
Just vent them anon, put a crewman in the door subsystem and open doors, lvl2 doors are the best investment you could make alongside the mind control
The most basic form of this is having 1 less energy for your engines than the max and whenever you're being shot at by a rocket or a nasty salvo - you momentarily depower your oxygen and assign that pip to engines, returning back to oxy once the salvo is over.
you need to vent
Level two shields as soon as possible will mean early sector enemies have a lot of trouble hitting you barring missile weapons, the scrap saved from hull repairs pays itself off
Upgrade doors
Flak I and Burst Laser Mk.2 are the best weapons in the game, get them by any means necessary
If you don't want to spend time figuring things out by yourself play a different game, seriously. FTL is too easy to sreamline and trivialize if you know what you're doing
To defend against boarders you need to understand how the doors subsystem works
>level 0 (starting): doors do not stop boarders at all, they can just walk through
>level 1: boarders have to break through closed doors
>level 2/3: doors get more strength and take longer to break through
When a door is broken through, it stays open for a while (until the boarders leave?
Literally filter them. With a vent
How do you even lose with a chain vulcan? Just invest in defense and that thibg will shred literally everything in the game
>0/51 achievements
I guess they added these at some point because I'm pretty sure I beat this game twice
Indeed. You'll get a bunch of them just for launching the game since they already had an in-game achievement system before adding Steam achievements.
Yes the game filtered me. I got bored before I got gud. I'm guessing it gets better and I stopped just before it did.
FRICK
A lvl 2 cloak is enough if you wait for the first salvo before cloaking, you DO wait for the first enemy salvo right?
>you DO wait for the first enemy salvo right?
He doesn't, he just pops the cloak right away, lmao.
>Multiverse
>Redditgay writing
>The dev team are full of troons
Thanks but hard pass, I'll stick to the vanilla game though.
Understandable and reasonable, I am merely suggesting it as a last ditch resort if your itch at some point becomes an open wound like mine did.
Silly anon with silly advice, begone with you.
How hard is to edit text?
Lets make multiverse clover revise. Nothing makes reddit seethe more that us touching their things
I always enjoy it, right until I'm fighting the final boss, then I hate it.
I am an ADHD monkey and I like ftl. You have to switch your attention to different things in combat, you don't need to WAIT much, events are pure text, no gay animations of npc moving to do something, weapon variety is good, but balance sucks.
Zoomers were beating this game in high school on the school issued ipads
>build you need to progress through the game is completely different than the build needed to beat the boss
>beating the boss is RNG, if your run wasnt lucky enough or you didnt make enough money you're shit out of luck when you get to the boss
>RNG
>players that are good at the game have 100+ uninterrupted winstreaks with random ship selection, one of them doesn't even use the pause
You simply should've macromanaged better.
amon gus
>have the best fricking setup
>never lost a single health
>about to finish the game
>need to go through a nebula sector
>goes in
>nebula disables 50% of my system
>teleportation raid
>*dies*
never played this game after that
You should've had more anti-raiding measures by that point.
>have the best setup
>rolled over by boarding crew
lmao
wiener ship is underappreciated.
>slowly build up from a weak little laz0r to a vulcan and flak
>focus on defense
>once you get rolling nothing can stop you
Very fun
I somehow ended up loving this game with all my heart. Once you get a basic hold of it it's one of the most fun and comfiest games ever.
Piece of shit rng fest.
You're just not good enough.
That's kind of the whole point of a rogue-like.
in a real roguelike i can immediately discern if a threat is too much for me to handle and disengage before things get bad. Disengagement could be a tp scroll or just using something to gain distance quickly. In FTL you're locked into every engagement until your FTL gauge fills so you'll generally eat a volley, putting you in a far worse position than a TP scroll would.
>in a real roguelike i can immediately discern if a threat is too much for me to handle and disengage before things get bad.
And you can't in FTL?
>And you can't in FTL?
>In FTL you're locked into every engagement until your FTL gauge fills so you'll generally eat a volley, putting you in a far worse position than a TP scroll would
>hurrr it's not a roguelike if I can't immediately escape any threat
You're moronic
I still think it's weird how most of the C layouts are either garbage like kestral C or challenge ships like federation/zoltan C, but it also has two of the all around most fun ships in the game, Slug C and Engi C
>Flak2 and 2x flak 1
>weapon pre-igniter and 2x automated reloaders
rngesus did smile upon me that day
This starsector mod is pretty cool, but I wish their starting position wasn't so ass
>run into a ship that has hacking drone, attack drone II, 3 shields, high engine and some lasers
>my own hacking drone is destroyed by stray laser RNG
>evasion RNG ensures my burst laser II, chain laser and charge laser do 0 hull damage for 3 volleys or 4/7 shots not landed 3 times in a row
>eat 47 hull damage, force their surrender and die to a fire proc while repairing because i couldn't find the stray fire fast enough while a nebula shut down my sensors
i hecking love RNG!!! should have simply risk managemented my lasers into hitting more
see
Pretty sure you can see if a system room is on fire even if you don't have sensors or are in a nebula. The system should have a fire symbol on top and you can see the bar going down. Also it is worth to fricking bail if you notice that a ship will grind you down
>Is this late into the game
>No defensive countermeasures like a def drone or a cloak system
>Somehow has burst laser 2 and hacking but did not manage to cripple the enemy with the initial salvo before being crippled himself
>Had engines so shit that he couldn't disengage
>Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems
>99.9999999999% had a chance to MACROmanage his overall run better to have optimized his vessel so that it would be prepared for this contingency, instead focuses on that singular encounter as if it takes place in a metaphorical vacuum without prior context of the entire run
Engines got hit before I could disengage and by the time I could I already had engines and weapons on fire
>Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems
That's how I put out most of the fires and with 1 hull left it's either hope the fire puts itself out before a single bar burns out or use crewmen to put out the fire before the bar burns out.
>roguelikes are literally risk assessment 99% of the time
>FTL doesn't give a frick about your risk assessment ability because you eat a mandatory volley without stealth
>Just vent your whole ship moron. Put all your crew in rooms without fire, then just open all doors.
>dude just hope the fire doesn't doesn't burn a single bar before it goes out
Buddy, the whole thing about Roguelikes is that they're punishing as hell.
>Buddy, the whole thing about Roguelikes is that they're punishing as hell
casinos are also punishing as hell and no one is calling them roguelikes
>Was gonna ask you where your goddamn shields were
2 shield and 1 got disabled by their hacking drone
>Assuming it's the chain laser I'm thinking of, you got a MINIMUM 6 lasers salvo + a hacker drone that effectively gives you an extra 3 guaranteed hits by nuking the shield. I refuse to believe you were fricked out of a hit AT LEAST 6 times in a row without proof.
I literally told you it was 7 lasers vs 3 shield and for THREE salvos I got 0 hits. hacking system was immediately taken out by their first salvo and they got a fire proc on my engine room
>they're also about risk management and contingency planning
yeah dude just plan to get good rolls and roll a safe node when you FTL jump
>engine needs several hits to be destroyed unless you did not upgrade it once
It doesn't have to be destroyed, it just has to be damaged enough to delay an FTL jump for a player to eat more salvos.
>fire only deals hull damage when the system is completly destroyed, did you really not put a single upgrade on engine?
yeah thats why it did damage when the level 1 sensor got destroyed.
>There are no unwinnable runs on easy or normal.
mantis ship first node asteroid field against zoltan ship. leto missile risk managements a hull breach in your shield system, an asteroid nails your pilot seat and contingency plans a hull breach under pilot.
>casinos are also punishing as hell and no one is calling them roguelikes
Nobody said the only thing about roguelikes is that they're punishing lol
>yeah dude just plan to get good rolls and roll a safe node when you FTL jump
You think Mantis B is bad, Slug C dies to average RNG, not even bad RNG.
>yes, a hacking drone was destroyed instantly from a stray laser likely from the attack drone.
>>Had engines so shit that he couldn't disengage
>Engines got hit before I could disengage and by the time I could I already had engines and weapons on fire
engine needs several hits to be destroyed unless you did not upgrade it once
>>Didn't shut down oxy and depressurize every non-crewed room upon hearing the fire on his ship AND even upon seeing a fire icon pop on one of his systems
>That's how I put out most of the fires and with 1 hull left it's either hope the fire puts itself out before a single bar burns out or use crewmen to put out the fire before the bar burns out.
fire only deals hull damage when the system is completly destroyed, did you really not put a single upgrade on engine? its all your fault
Just vent your whole ship moron. Put all your crew in rooms without fire, then just open all doors.
Mantis B is supposed to be one of the strongest ships in the game but I can't win with it. What are some tips?
git gud
Just have 4 crew ready to port over every fight.
Have some way to deal with zoltan shields and to disable med/clone bays.
That's it. 4 tile teleporters are busted, enemy crews can't handle 4 boarders at a time.
>4 tile teleporters are busted
eh, it still takes a buttload of micromanagement. Even in the earlier sectors, since a lot of rooms are two tiles and you can only fight two-on-one at best while your other two borders are kind of useless.
>while your other two borders are kind of useless.
Black person what. You know you can damage their systems with your crew?
>You know you can damage their systems with your crew?
Sure, but it takes a long time, and you can't attack those systems with your weapons while they're there.
So basically you have to send them to the engines or something, while you focus on the shields and weapons with your own weapons.
>and you can't attack those systems with your weapons while they're there.
Mantiscuck detected, get a rock crew you pussy.
>rock crew
They still suffocate when you punch a hole
If you're asleep at your keyboard sure. Just move into another room if you've punched a hole into a room with a system, that system is already fricked anyway.
Just lure their crew with two attackers while the other two disable oxygen/medbay/shields depending on the situation, aim your weapon to either oxygen/medbay/enemy crew and you should have a safe victory. Micromanage your crew so that they don't get hit by your weapons or get a clone bay.
I've definitely done this.
Boarding is generally very heavy on micromanagement.
I was constantly fighting to within an inch of the health bar, and then swapping to a fresh boarder
It's pretty awkward to get it going in the early game.
If you're not experienced, you also tend to lose boarding crew very easily
The beginning can be pretty rough. Send one of your crew to sensors to decide if you can board with two crew and try to either get to a pirate sector to find slave traders or buy additional crew if you get unlucky
One of my favorite games.
>4 man teleporter room
Time for lots of non-consensual boarding.
I bet this game a decade ago. I keep seeing new threads about it, did they update it recently?
I think they updated it in 2017 at the same time they released it for iphones.
It's just a good game, one of the best nu-roguelikes, if not the best.
Advanced edition content makes the game less fun in general.
Disagreed, the only thing I dislike about AE is that the Lanius feel kinda halfbaked.
>want to play Lanius
>remember BOTH their layouts have a fricking Clone Bay
are there any mods to remove clone bays from the game?
clone bay is great since you can send your crew on events like giant alien spiders without any risk of losing crew
I just hate not being able to top off health between fights.
Unless you use Lanius, you can suffocate your own crew after a battle to have them at full for the next fight. You wont be able to level them up this way, but you don't really have to. It takes longer, but is worth it if your setup relies on boarding with clone bay.
Really? It was extremely popular among hipsters and normies back in the day.
Too repetitive, this dev has that problem in all of their games
>cant resize in window mode
dropped
yes you can
played it on easy because i couldnt beat normal. going by how few have the achievement for beating the game on normal, i guess im not the only one.
my biggest problem is that you cant just have a good strategy against your enemies and expect for it to work on the boss as well. ive played tons of runs where i would basically just kill the crew before destroying the ship for more loot. i would always wreck shit with anti bio beams, fie beams or that tripple EMP gun. shut down oxygen to suffocate them to death, etc. too bad that strategy will never work against the boss. or is at least way harder to pull off. for one, you have way too many enemies, then you have a lvl 4 shield, try breaking that when you have no missiles and a dinky tripple salvo weapon, be it regular burst or emp doesnt matter, youre not going to get through that shield. your lasers can do frick all when the shield is up but you also need to keep them charged because your attack window for when the shields go down is icredibly small.
i played only one or two runs on the content expansion and i mist say, those oxygen sucking crew members are absolute ass. i dont see their utility. you cant put them together with other mates, they makes rooms inhospitable so they have to be somewhere where no one has to pass through and they dont have any notable advantage. they dont have anything going for them in their favor unless you have an entire crew of them. then theyre bonkers against boarders
well against the boss you could send your crew at shields, eventually they would have killed everybody and destroy it but it would take some time so you would need a giga tank of a ship who somehow has no good weapons
You should have known better, man. Those giant alien spiders are no joke.
>Supposedly insurmountable superhuge flagship boss
>Gets wrecked by cloaking and a couple cannons that shoot trash
Lmao
It you pressed pause more than once per encounter you didn't beat the game.
It didn't filter me but I didn't like it either
It gets really repetitive really fast and the gameplay isn't good enough to justify the repetition
I've done three seperate playthroughs of FTL where I beat it with every single ship in the game on hard.
There 100% are unwinnable runs on hard.
There are no unwinnable runs on easy or normal.
If you get your ass beat on those difficulties you're just shit.
i only played on hard since i got the game and only got my first win at 95 hours
whats Ganker's opinion on multiverse mod? for me the humour can get cringy but the gameplay is much better. i did not saw anything political like others claims here.
Overall the mod is begrudgingly enjoyed but is on very thing ice for me.
>playing Lanius 2
>buy sensors
>get human crew member
>get mantis crew member
>lose both lanius two an AI ship jumping away because i wasn't paying enough attention
>get another mantis crew member
At this point i'm just flying a Mantis 1 ship aren't I?
Isn't lanius 2 the one that comes with the custom buffed Flak 1?
Frick boarding tbh
It has a teleporter and a mind control by default, it's already a god tier boarding vessel and i haven't found any other decent guns.
Did they ever updated the game with gas weapons?
>filters 95% of """gamers"""
oops wrong image
The main problem I have with this game is the fact that cloaking/hacking are the only consistent ways to win. And when every run becomes "just get cloaking and/or hacking, lol" then the main appeal of the game (variety) evaporates. This concept applies to any other rouge-like, too.
Sounds like you genuinely suck at this game
Frick the giant spider rescue event.
>it's another episode of rolling dice for teleporter and le mantis rape boarding squad
Game got a lot more fun after I learned you can manually backup and restore the save files. Stupid that I have to do that though, put a fricking save/load function in like every other game.
>filters you
Engi B is shit but at least it's unique.
There's worse ships imo.
AYO IS THAT AMONGUS
The average Ganker tard is simply not smart enough for non shooter games
FTL filters no one, though? its like the most intuitive rougelite ever, you know all the parameters after playing once or twice.
it has an extraordinarily good UI
you guys beat Sylvan Prime, right?
I dunno how. The most I've done was do the obelisk ending.
Full Zoltan crew, max reactors, max backup battery. Basically eliminates energy micromanagement, you'll always have enough power to run all your systems.
why eliminate energy management at such a limiting cost? its no bother at all, there isnt that much to actively do in this game
>Rock bros want to have an endurance contest near a sun
>they also try to shoot you down
>somehow i'm the bad guy for killing their whole crew and looting what's left
who writes this shit?
What writing called you a bad guy
>You feel a twinge of guilt
It's in the text box. Like, no i fricking don't. Don't fire on me if you don't want me to warp in mantises and bomb your healing bay.
I love this game, but damn I suck a lot at it. I think I cleared a run like... twice.
Its fun as hell though.
how do i get better at this game. I was playing it yesterday I got to the last sector with the penis ship and died. I even had cloaking
just glance over tier lists for ships, weapons and systems
I admit it, FTL filtered me. But someday I will beat it
>get good rng
>everything works well and its easy
>get bad rng
>you die by the fourth jump
I hate the rng nature of every single round.
>favourite playstyle is starting fires on every room in every enemy spaceship ever
>drones and "heh good luck getting past my 10 shields" ships frick me right over erry tiem
i mean it makes sense, but i wish there was an alternative that wasn't wasting missiles on fire bombs.
I like starting fires and sending in a rockmen boarding party, but I usually dont win when I go for a fun playstyle
me neither, but i can appreciate the sheer butthurt seething every crewmember on board an enemy vessel must be when i send in two crystal men and more straight into their weapons/shield room, crystallize the doors and wreck havoc at my own leisure.
Watching their entire crew congregate fire on one door while every room behind them fills up with fire and smoke, only for me to beam the boarding crew out just as they break down the door? absolutely fantastic. best fun i had in ages
and then i have 5 runs in a row with dogshit RNG and uninstall the game again
>whole game is trivial as frick
>the only difficulty comes from the rebel flagship
>you have to do wank shit for an hour before you fight the flagship
shit game balance
Is it really that hard of a game? All the PC gamer kids in middle school were playing this when it came out
>accidentally kill the entire crew of the final ship
>it's not actually that bad, just leave one dude in each turret room and the weapons will still stay broken forever.
I always just left one enemy crew alive so the auto-repair never kicks in
that's what i normally do, but i had forgotten which gun turret was best to leave a guy in and accidentally killed both of the two that don't get killed by the phase changes.
>It's fun but there's almost too much emphasis on RNG and not on tactics or skill.
Filtered.
game fricking sucks, I dont understand why you people like it so much. or maybe I just dont like rougelikes, where you have to retry every 30 minutes because that's when the wall appears
Zoltan A is my favorite.
>THIS is the game that filters the inferior lesser pleb casual scrubs
Frick off and go back
>*installs this mod*
yep, it's comfy gaming time
woops forgot to link it

I kinda wish there was an actually properly supported sandbox game like FTL. I made do kinda with Convoy but it's still a game that's all about playthroughs and reaching a finish line. There was a neat little mobile game called pixel starships that was kinda that but it was a mobile game with gacha shit and other garbage.
Starfield is gonna be FTL meets Skyrim
Believe in it!
But I unlocked all the ships and beat the game as at least half of them!
>every game plays out exactly the same way
it's like Rimword or any other top down garbage
Comfiest game ever made and it’s not even close. It scratches every itch for me
>boy this new ship is cool
>get cloaking, hacking, flak for the 10000th time
Yeaaa im good
is it just me that never buys cloak? i always go for mind control/drones and hacking. mind control is for reducing the evasion when shooting my guns at enemy, drones for defense against rockets and hack for shields
I just want to get the last Crystal ship achievement for blowing up Rock ships and then I'm going to put this game away forever. RNG's a b***h.
Just use manual save/loading and cheese it.
>mfw when attempting Ancestry for the millionth time
I suffer.
