I've never played 2 or 3 for famicom but out of the ones I've played 1 is the most like dungeons and dragons, which is the main reason why I like it so much. 4 and beyond felt like watching a movie. those games are really linear and hold your hand and you don't need to do a lot of exploring to figure out where you need to go. ff1 is the only one i've played where I really felt like I was free in an open world. the magic system is more like dnd too. instead of a mana pool you get a certain number of spells per day that you can memorize again when you rest at an inn. not to mention it's the game that saved square. it kinda reminds me of morrowind in that way, since morrowind is the game that saved bethesda and is more open world and less hand holdy than a lot of the other games in the series.
yeah, the feeling of exploration is something 1 has over the other games in the series, though you can get lost in 2 for the nes as well. You might like it if you're into that, but be warned, it will probably kick your ass the first time you play it.
I always hated vancian spellcasting though, glad they got rid of that
yeah I hear 2 is balls to the wall difficult. I was thinking of getting into 3 since I hear so many good things about it and there's a cool 3d remake. the job system intrigues me more than anything. would you recommend it?
it's more linear than 1 and 2, but also more balanced except for the difficulty spike near the end
word? I'll try out 2 then it seems more my style. thanks for the recs
>playing through FF3
>first time
>I played through 1, 2, 4, 7-11 though
>find it easy, just decimating everything coming my way
>the last three or so dungeons are much more difficult
play dq3 if you like exploration rpgs
I only played dq1 and it was alright but didn't hold my attention. still iconic though. how similar is dq3?
dq3 is very similar to FF1
I guess I'll have to check it out as well then. usually when I play dq1 I just feel like I'd rather be playing ff1. maybe dq3 will get me into the series.
its understandable that DQ1 will have that impression because it is the first JRPGs that spawned FFs and the likes. But DQ3 is the more refined version of NES FFs.
If you like FF1 and similar games, you'll most likely enjoy all Dragon quest game from 3 to 11.
It's crazy that the story is good enough it still holds up
Wayyy ahead of its time
I have never played it. How close was 8bit Theatre to the actual story?
There is basically no story. Stranger of Paradise miraculously carves one out which is completely bizarro world for SquareEnix post Sakaguchi.
Nomura was allowed to do what he wanted with SOP that is why. He's the only talent left in the FF department.
FF1 is a Kawazu game so no shit you like it if you want an actual RPG, especially if you like D&D.
>ff1 is the only one i've played where I really felt like I was free in an open world.
Because Kawazu designed it that way.
Go play the SaGa games, they're FF1+FF2 but on steroids, if you like open ended progression and gameplay focused game, on top of a generous sprinkle of that AD&D flavour, you'll surely enjoy that series a lot more than post NES FF, SaGa also uses a similar, but better, learn by doing system as the TES games so you'll be right at home.
These are really great points, one being that the originals are really "role-playing" games meant to spark imagination in DnD context, the other being that Origins runs like a charm which might not be the case for the original game
Did you play the original NES release for FFI? That version is incredibly broken and later ports fixes it. In particular, Origins and Pixel Remaster are the best versions of the game.
Anyways yeah there is certainly a quaint feeling to FF1 since it just plops you onto the world after choosing your jobs and expects you to figure out where to go next. Its very simple mechanically but has enough enjoyable gameplay to keep itself going. I will always personally prefer later FFs since they managed to carve an identity for themselves beyond just being DnD in NES form and have actual living breathing worlds to explore despite being more linear, but I'll always respect FFI for starting everything and being a decent game in its own right.
I prefer playing NES with a bugfix patch for FF1 and FF2 because I like the original sprites, but the WSC and PS1 version are both fine.
Pixel remaster is garbage. Items ruin balance. Last boss has 10x as much hp and still has full heal. Rest of game is a joke.
Original had more difficulty but still allowed for any party composition to be successful; which is the main enjoyment of it.
yeah it was the first ff I played. I had a physical copy for nes. I know some of the stats are broken but it never became a problem for me.
there are bugfix romhacks for it now, best way to play imho
>I've never played 2 or 3 for famicom
>FF1 is the best
It's a good game but you're a massive homosexual for making that claim and you haven't even played the next two games
Can there be a single. fricking. thread about Final Fantasy on this site that isn't moronic?
I have played every single other game and am playing ff2 rn. I like it but I haven't gotten pretty far. I wasn't really trying to shit on other games I just wanted to nerd out over ff1. not everything's so serious.
>final fantasy 1 is the best final fantasy
>1 is the most like dungeons and dragons
So which is it? Dnd is shit and needs to die.
define dnd
FF1 is loosely based on AD&D which is the only acceptable D&D edition.
Last good edition is 3.5
thats not 13th edition
I like that one where you can change the dudes class and he gets new clothes.
I can't remember the name, played it a really long time ago.
You sound like a boring person desperate to come off less boring
You sound like a person desperate to come off
It really is the best.
I like how the class upgrades are just chad sprite versions instead of chibis.
The first of the fantasies of final is one of the if not the of all time.
I genuinely think the "won't redirect your attacks if the enemy has been killed" is actually fantastic and at least gets you engaged with normal battles rather than just mashing A. Plus having a set range of damage for spells makes the Red Mage more viable as a alternative compared to most versions.
If there was a fan patch that made Agility actually work with the MS2X graphics, it'd be my favorite old FF game.
To me it added a layer of strategy.
If you don't plan your attacks well, you'll miss.
It's one of the reasons why I liked FF Legends 2 back in the day as well
Everybody says FFVI is the best, I'm playing it now, it's good but I liked FFI too.
FFVI gives me strong Chrono Trigger vibes too.
Currently playing ff1 on the gba, its neat.
>playing the bastardized GBA version
You could do better than that, Hans
>MP
disgusting
the gba was cool it's the only handheld console I ever had. I imagine being able to play ff wherever you want would be fun. save those crystals my guy!
The GBA had one of the best libraries.
I think it only loses to PSP.
