I actually bought, played and finished FFXV recently, and while it wasn't a bad game it was clearly and obviously rushed.
      >Combat was good even though it wasn't FF combat.
      >It was ridiculously easy.
      >Story suffered hard because of how much it was rushed through.
      >Clearly bloated and padded with a bunch of mmo-tier side fetch quests.
      >Soundtrack was good but I honestly expected better.
This game clearly suffers of the good ol' "Open world" syndrome sadly, it just has exhausting amounts of irrelevant side shit for you to do for no reason other than padding time and that is my biggest criticism. FF games always had side quests and stuff, but this is just ridiculous.
This was my first FF game since X-2 and I also thought X-2 was disappointing.
What did you guys think of it?

          >you found Holding O all the time being good?
There was a bit more to it than just holding O, but what can I say, I'm a big dark souls fan and the combat reminded me of it so guilty as charged I suppose. Don't get me wrong though, this is NOT the gameplay I was wanting out of a final fantasy, I just don't think it was that bad out of personal taste.
          >it was too drowned out for me so I used my own tunes
At some point I kinda did too, there were only two or three songs from the game I added to a personal playlist of mine.

            >There was a bit more to it than just holding O

I am aware but the lack of difficulty in XV didn't motivate me to do more than Hold O.
Maybe if the game didn't let you use items AT ZERO HP I would actually learn the combat

              Anonymous

Yeah that I fully agree with, the game was shamefully easy. I was really hoping there would be an extra difficulty unlocked after beating it once or on new game+, but alas.

6, 9, and 7 Remake (possibly soon Rebirth) would probably be the easiest for a newcomer to get into and not feel that it's outdated.

I wish I could recommend OG 7, but there is a port that is modernized, it's still largely the same original PC port from the 90s with some cheats thrown in.
4 is also my personal favorite, but I'm well aware that it might not fly for a new player due to not necessarily being as open to the style of the earlier era of JRPG narratives.

You're probably correct, I haven't played it in awhile, I just remember the mechanics being solid (other than 9's equivalent of limits). I forgot how slow it would've been.

pretty new to jrpgs, only played the xenoblade trilogy and DQ11. 7 Remake feels very much like it's entirely made to cash in on 7 being the most popular, and if I wanted to experience it I'd probably want to do it with the original, though im not sure how dated it is.

        Anonymous

OG is incredibly dated. It's a big reason people were hoping for more a remaster than anything that could modernize things a bit rather than a full remake.

7 Remake were the OG creators of 7 realizing how old they were and that if they didn't get started on their idea of a "remake" soon, it would simply never happen. There's been talk of a remake since the PS3 era.

        Anonymous

FF7 is going to be very dated for you if you're getting started with this genre this far in.

Only thing I can recommend is patience and understanding that the 90's was a long time ago at this point.

  8. 3 months ago

1 is worth a few hours just to see where it started and how it evolved

5 is the only one with good gameplay that doesn't waste your time

6 looks good and the story is fine but it's the start of the jap autism that would eventually kill the series

7 is iconic and it's almost "great" but too many bad design decisions and some of the worst characters in the series bring it down. There was zero need to have 9 different characters when only Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie had anything of interest going on with them. Materia is a fun system but its potential is wasted due to the fact you'll never get all the good materia to make fun combos with until you reach the end disc 2 spending hours grinding ap in mideel

10 has all of 7s problems but at least its sphere grid system isn't as autistically restrictive as 7s materia is. The voice acting is also pretty bad, and the characters are even worse minus Yuna and Wakka

8 should've just been the 2001 movie. It's not worth playing at all despite looking and sounding great

9 showcases the power the ps1 had but its awful and forgettable and somehow worse than 8

Nothing else is noteworthy or worth discussing.

Hell, almost the entirety of the first one is literally 'played' on autopilot, and you don't get free control of your characters until you reach the Pulse segment. The plot's ridiculous as well, especially with how much they want off FemCloud (who is an utter b***h).

The Ivalice games are their most interesting, so that leaves
    >All tactics games
    >FF12
    >Vagrant story, if you consider that
The main criticism of 12 is that the AI companions can be programmed with up to 12 simple "if, then" statements to make them actually useful. Not sure WHY it was bad to implement the best, most customizable party AI in any game, but here we are. Zodiac age is on steam and makes the game a lot easier but also locks characters to classes you pick, giving them more identity. Even weapons have a lot of variety in their stats, like Maces using the magic stat for attack power or staves attacking enemy magic defense. The story is also more about the people around your main character than Vaan himself, making it more interesting.

The areas are fairly large, open spaces without much detail because of the PS2 limitations though, but the main focus of the game is the story and optional bosses over exploration so it doesn't bother me at all. Try it for yourself before you listen to people who cry about it and play at least until you get all 6 party members so you have a chance to play with gambits a little bit.

Many games in the series are worth playing, more than you probably have an appetite for

So I will answer a slightly different question; if you will only play three final fantasy games, which should you play?

FF7 Remake - Ofc one of the best stories in the series, an incredible remastered soundtrack, and very solid gameplay. Many will say it's not finished but frankly the best part of the game has already been adapted and stands alone fine. It's worth it to just play part 1.

FF6 Brave New World - The other best story in the series, still looking good in 2D. This is probably the best FF6 romhack to rebalance and make the OG more fun. I'd play on an SNES with Everdrive, or a hyperkin / other fpga, or any hacked console

Final Fantasy Tactics 1.3. Really fun gameplay concept and the best use of the class system in the series. And the 32 bit sprites are some of the best art in the series. 1.3 is the big FFT rebalance everyone likes; it will probably filter you, but play it anyway. For this one I'd mod a PS2 if you have one, or just emulate it on any hacked console.

I'm playing Remake right now and I have to say I don't agree with any of that. Firstly, they butchered the soundtrack. They had all these iconic tunes to use, but instead they made terrible remixes and rearrangements that only hint at what once was. The new stuff is just forgettable. As for the rest of the game, it's padded to hell and back and the story moves at a crawl. They took the opening few hours of the original and stretched it into 40 hours of running down hallways. There are little to no meaningful additions to make it worthwhile. I'm pushing through because I think I will enjoy Rebirth more but man it's a slog.

    >What games in this series are ACTUALLY worth a go?
Are you talking about worth looking at for a perspective back on the series, or do you mean worth playing today?

For today's standards, I don't really think any. Maybe FF15, FF16, and FF7R have some good gameplay in them, but everything before that is pretty standard JRPG faire. It's a little better than turn-based combat in a RPGMaker game, but having slightly action turn-based combat with the ATB timer isn't really that huge of a deal now.

If you want to go back and look at the highlights of the series, then look at FF1, FF6, FF7, and probably FF10. You can probably judge how much you're interested in other titles based on those.

All of them up until 7, and then 10.
1-3 are all short enough that you can beat them in 15 hours a piece. They're fun to see the evolution of the series and the early job systems.
4-6 are worth playing just to see the actual golden era of squaresoft JRPGs, and again 4-5 are short (about 20-25 hours). 6 starts to get a bit longer, but it's still only about 30 hours.
7 is the most iconic game in the series with the best combat system and second best story.
8 and 9 aren't worth playing in any way shape or form. 8 is an absolute mess of a game with an even worse translation. 9 is slow, boring, has awful characters, an incredibly meandering story, the slowest combat with insanely long animations on even basic attacks, and in general does not respect your time as a player.
And then 10 is quite literally the definitive Final Fantasy game.

Instead of 1, 3 and 5, I recommend playing Bravely Default, although 5 is definitely still good.

4 is unique. I recommend emulating the DS version with undub. The snes version is good.

6 should be the snes version, but with the gba translation. I tried both the original, the gba, five different fan translations and even read the Japanese. The gba translation gives the most natural English, even though it's overly loquacious and the snes version is terser like the Japanese.

7 is good. You should play the ps1 version with the "beacause" translation. Use the chicago font and the official names.

I don't care for 8, but I'm not your mom.

9 is great. I prefer how the ps1 version looks, but it plays great on Switch too.

    I don't care for 10.

    I haven't played 11.

12 is great. The PS2 version with undub is best, because the gameplay changes in later versions are poorly thought through. That said, they are all decent, look good, and come with Japanese voices. The English dub isn't terrible though, and the judges sound better in English.

    I can't recommend 13.

14 is a bad game with a decent story. It requires you to play it for literally hundreds of hours. It's not worth it.

15 is not done, but with the right mind set, it's great. You're supposed to take it slow, camp a lot and explore.

16 was rushed, unfortunately. Fun combat with overly spongy enemies. A good story with terrible sidequests, and interesting systems. I had fun, but I can't recommend it.

How come XVI was rushed? I never read anything about it similar to the shit XV went through.
Why would Square be so lax about a mainline game?

I dunno about rushed but it certainly had the standard near-endless dev hell that seems to plague everything they make now. It was in dev since at least 2015 and they've talked a few times about changes to the story.
Would make sense given how anemic barney's role is in the actual story compared to how he looks in the early shots.
Decently fun though, and that's something you can't say for a while.

Most of that extended dev time was them building the engine from FFXIV's as a base, and trying to figure out how they were going to make the combat because they didn't have the in-house knowledgebase for it.

Final Fantasy is a pop culture series and they are highly derivative of whatever is popular at the time, so unironically none of them. Normally I'd say play the original FF7, realize how much of a shallow movie game series FF is, and then drop it, but even FF7 is being remade and isn't relevant any more. It's really quite bad. Play literally anything else.

Jack's game is really cool and fun. It's my second favourite game behind Final Fantasy 5

The job system is kino and I wish they used it more outside of spinoffs.
Jack's game having one of the first instances of it in ages is a crime.

FF can be divided in 4 phases:
Infancy (I, II, III): total garbage even for their own times
Adolescence (IV, V, VI): masterpieces for their own times, but aged horribly bad
Maturity (VII, VIII, IX, X): timeless masterpieces, still now as they were back then
Senility (XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI): the definition of soulless corporate goyslop

The only garbage game in 'infancy' is II and that's because the skilling system was stupid, if they changed it a bit it'd be better.
VIII is a lot worse than any of the 'adolescence' games

it is really cool, and completely broken. You have a huge amount of freedom to do almost whatever. Of course there are better combinations than others, but it's all there to figure out. Plus being able to clear the game with any combination is cool, there aren't parts like in 3 where you require certain jobs to progress.

All of them besides XIII trilogy and XV really.
You can have varying tastes accounting for different opinions on all the other ones, but those are just bad games, never mind bad FF's.

2 and 8 for gamebreaking purposes, 8 for asthettics, 10 for the blitzball minigame and the super bosses, 7 because legendary, 5 for job system fun. 9 for classic final fantasy, Tactics Advance and A2f or childish fun, Crystal Chronicles for fun with friends.

2? Why 2? I mean you can kind of get broken just by farming to rank 16 on stuff but that's only slightly above just normal grinding

In the world beyond, the Magnificent Goddess sleeps, dreaming of her return to humanity in the inevitable remake. Those who have seen her with their own eyes compare her to the most beautiful rose in the world...

      Her name is...

13 was garbage but at least it felt like toriyama cared about the game he was making, or at least a character, I almost feel bad for it considering it was responsible for 15

        Toriyama won't let go.
        He will never let go.
To make the impossible possible - this is his Focus.

13 was made in spite all adversities, like a literally broken engine. Given the circumstances of its development, it is a miracle of a game. With a good engine and enough time, and if Nojima completes the FNC myth, Claire's remake will be the best epic tale ever made.

If I would grab only one now, during the current Steam sale, what should it be?
    XII ZA, XIII or XV?
    I’ve played all previous ones.

You can include all the new ones in the lowest tier or even one below that. Was too lazy to update since I do not give a shit about this trash franchise anymore
