The character does a bunch of flashy moves, the screen explodes in numbers and particles and the enemies do frick-all the whole time. Then the character wins.

I wouldn't say its bad. It completely uninspiring, which is amazing since Final Fantasy has always been the pioneer when it comes to the first entry on a new console.
Everything about it is just a downgrade from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. FF7R looks better, plays better. The characters and narrative from FF7R can range from stupid to batshit insane but FF16 is super safe by just being another boring ass Game of Thrones knockoff.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is going to blow FF16 so goddamn hard no one will remember it.
