What versions would you guys recommend, and why? I know 9 has a fricked up translation, and 4 and 6's PS1 ports are fricked apparently.

6 is the only FF worth playing and even that one is overhyped
9 will bore you to death as soon as the main cast shows up and you ping-ping between slow af fights and shameless QTEs

I am fine with playing 4 and 6 as is emulated on SNES but with the case of 9 I refuse to play it with it's default translation. It's like a completely different story. Other than just brute force reading nihongo, is there a fan translation or something out there?

Are FF7 and FF8's English translations this bad too? For FF7 I only know about the one where Tifa calls Barret a moron while running up the stairs, but that's about it.

No clue, but considering the era, I wouldn't doubt it. It's shit like this that turned an entire generation of weebs into subgays and some into actually learning the language.

That's why you learn the language.
FF7's translation isn't bad, its ENGLISH is bad. The problem with the English script is that it clearly wasn't proofread and has lots of grammar mistakes (This guy are sick) and spelling errors (Beacause). Even something like "Attack while its tail is up" isn't a translation error, but a missing comma.
There's some things I definitely don't like about the English translation.

Overall, it's a good translation that needed to be proofread not by another Japanese speaker, but by another Anglo-Saxon. There's a reason millions of English speakers came out of the credits calling it the best game ever made, to the present day.
Even the "confusion" about how the Sephiroths you see throughout the game being Jenova or whatever isn't a bad translation. English-speaking players inferred this on forums without consulting the Japanese version because you can infer this if you give it some thought. Sometimes, Japanese directing isn't very subtle, so many people appreciate how this was depicted in English.
I was 11 when I played it and had no problem understanding what jenova was and that the clone sephiroth were actually jenova. It was pretty apparent on the boat after sephiroth turns into a tentacle and then when he spells everything out to you in the basement. I'm convinced it's just handicapped children button mashing through dialogue, then complaining that the game makes no sense, when they were hitting buttons like an epileptic having a stroke.

Pixel Remaster, the music is amazing and the new artwork does not clash with the game's tone (unlike FF6), you could also play the 3d ds remake (also on pc), it's much harder but it has cutscenes with surprisingly great voice acting and direction, the ds version also has an amazing script, FF4's story is not that great but its great character moments are even better here. There is also some kind of party chat like the Dragon Quest games in this one

Woolsie's original translation is great and it adds a lot of character to the game, this patch cleans up the script and removes all censorship present in the US original.

I played the DS version of 4, didn’t care for the chunky 3D. With 6 I think the SNES version looks great. Fantastic even. Pixel Remaster might be ok but why not just emulate for free? Moguri Mod for 9 upscales the prerendered backgrounds and Steam version lacks the long load times for combat. Don’t listen to autists saying the game is bad, it’s genuinely one of the stronger titles.
FF5 is my favorite

They are all built, designed, developed, programmed and produced with the intent you would be playing them on their respective console which exports the image files at 240p to a CRT tube television (though PS2 titles were made at 720p output).
So I recommend that.
If, for someone reason, you're emulating pirated digital files on your computer and don't really intend to play the games from start-to-finish before just watching the first 20 minutes and thinking,

I played the 3DS remake of IV two years ago and I regret it. It was fun and looked good, but by the end I started feeling like I was missing something by not seeing the SNES sprite art.
