Tactics Ogre is good. Haven't played Vagrant Story. FF12 is not quite as good as the FFs that came before it but also not as bad as the FFs that have come after.

If my assumptions are right, the team is trying to balance both respecting the OG and providing a fresh narrative people can get into. This should mean they are introducing the time janny stuff as a ploy from Sephiroth, who tricked (you) into trying to change the tragic outcomes of the original game, but this resulted in an even worse timeline where the planet is actually doomed and you have to go through greater pain and sacrifice to make things right, complementing the overall theming of the original game. This is what brings unity to the FF series and makes the classic games feel "FF-like", while newer ones like XVI are universally regarded as not real Final Fantasy.

It had a fun localization. It didn't "misunderstand plot points" but it did communicate them rather poorly. There's a fan translation patch called Beacause (named after a horrible typo in the original game), but it's rather dry compared to the original English text, and it even changed all the item and character names to match the Japanese instead of other modern FF releases (though I think this part of it has been rectified). Someone ought to make a compromise between the original localization and the new fan patch.

I've seen so many FF7R shills defend the "remake" by saying "well it's basically the same story outline as the original." The problem is almost every way in which it differs is worse. It's taking something that worked totally fine as-is (actually more than fine, literally beloved and iconic) and either adding a bunch of pointless shit on top or just obliterating all the subtlety, buildup, and brilliant pacing of the original.
Sure I can. Prime example: in the original game, you find the Midgar Zolom impaled on a tree, and Cloud goes "Did Sephiroth...do this?" It's an ominous and imposing moment, backed with creepy music: the bloody corpse of this bigass monster you just had to avoid to progress, capped like it was nothing by Sephiroth.
In Rebirth, you have a boss fight with the monster (which itself tones down how imposing the monster itself is: in the original game, running into it at that point was basically guaranteed death, while here it's something you can at least hold your own with for a bit), which ends with a cluster of time jannies popping up and forming into Sephiroth, who then tosses the serpent into a tree in front of your whole party.
The sudden shock of stumbling on the gruesome aftermath of this feat is far more effective than a dumb, in-your-face display of Sephiroth's epic awesome badassery. Seeing the dead Zolom was intimidating not just because of the power gap you and Sephiroth, but also the knowledge that Sephiroth (who you've barely seen at this point) is far ahead of you. Not to mention, it makes sense that Sephiroth would leave behind a dead Zolom for reasons beyond just fricking with Cloud's party, as it presumably would've attacked him. By contrast, it's feels stupid for him to show up and save Cloud's life just to taunt him. And this is without bringing up that "Sephiroth" here is initially a cluster of dumb fricking time ghosts.
The immediate appeal of a setpiece from the original is drawn out, misunderstood, and has its subtlety wiped and distracting, convoluted elements shoehorned in. Now repeat this for every good moment from the original game. THIS is the ultimate failure of the FF7R project. Frick this stupid game.

Lmao, the "subtlety" is wiped the moment that the Zolom was revealed to be nothing more than a slightly stronger mob that you can literally grind. In Rebirth the zolom is shown the be an actual enigma, a singular powerful creature that controls the swamp.
The problem with remake that for some reason SE though it will be fricking amazing to add 15hrs of pointless side quests and maps like sewers. Delete it from the game, don't even add or change anything, and it will already be much better paced. And I don't even talk about an opportunity to make stuff better.

This is what brings unity to the FF series and makes the classic games feel "FF-like", while newer ones like XVI are universally regarded as not real Final Fantasy.

There's a fan translation patch called Beacause (named after a horrible typo in the original game), but it's rather dry compared to the original English text, and it even changed all the item and character names to match the Japanese instead of other modern FF releases (though I think this part of it has been rectified). Someone ought to make a compromise between the original localization and the new fan patch.

I've seen so many FF7R shills defend the "remake" by saying "well it's basically the same story outline as the original." The problem is almost every way in which it differs is worse. It's taking something that worked totally fine as-is (actually more than fine, literally beloved and iconic) and either adding a bunch of pointless shit on top or just obliterating all the subtlety, buildup, and brilliant pacing of the original.

Sure I can. Prime example: in the original game, you find the Midgar Zolom impaled on a tree, and Cloud goes "Did Sephiroth...do this?" It's an ominous and imposing moment, backed with creepy music: the bloody corpse of this bigass monster you just had to avoid to progress, capped like it was nothing by Sephiroth.
In Rebirth, you have a boss fight with the monster (which itself tones down how imposing the monster itself is: in the original game, running into it at that point was basically guaranteed death, while here it's something you can at least hold your own with for a bit), which ends with a cluster of time jannies popping up and forming into Sephiroth, who then tosses the serpent into a tree in front of your whole party.
The sudden shock of stumbling on the gruesome aftermath of this feat is far more effective than a dumb, in-your-face display of Sephiroth's epic awesome badassery. Seeing the dead Zolom was intimidating not just because of the power gap you and Sephiroth, but also the knowledge that Sephiroth (who you've barely seen at this point) is far ahead of you. Not to mention, it makes sense that Sephiroth would leave behind a dead Zolom for reasons beyond just fricking with Cloud's party, as it presumably would've attacked him. By contrast, it's feels stupid for him to show up and save Cloud's life just to taunt him. And this is without bringing up that "Sephiroth" here is initially a cluster of dumb fricking time ghosts.
The immediate appeal of a setpiece from the original is drawn out, misunderstood, and has its subtlety wiped and distracting, convoluted elements shoehorned in. Now repeat this for every good moment from the original game. THIS is the ultimate failure of the FF7R project. Frick this stupid game.

Lmao, the "subtlety" is wiped the moment that the Zolom was revealed to be nothing more than a slightly stronger mob that you can literally grind. In Rebirth the zolom is shown the be an actual enigma, a singular powerful creature that controls the swamp.
The problem with remake that for some reason SE though it will be fricking amazing to add 15hrs of pointless side quests and maps like sewers. Delete it from the game, don't even add or change anything, and it will already be much better paced. And I don't even talk about an opportunity to make stuff better.
