Not really. In action games you're attacking the actual character model, whereas in FFVIIR you're attacking the space the model inhabits. Timing, positioning, etc... is pretty much nonexistent. It's there, but only on a superficial level. It has no real impact due to how shallow it is and the general imbalance.
Remake is effectively just ATB, except you have to button mash more and can run around a 3D plane, if you want. Don't really have to though.

It's just FFXII but again, with 15x button mashing and longer animations and cutscenes to make the battles have some illusion of excitement.
Personally? I'd rather watch 1.2s of Geralt bisecting bandits in real time than the 15-45s Limit/Summon/Synergy cutaway animations. Shit is cool precisely one (1) time, then it's just annoying.

my recommendation is to play as much as you want to play. Eventually you will want to go back to check stuff.
Actual side quests are always worth doing, as are the summon shrines/materia fights, and the protorelic open world stuff. minigames are hit or miss but most of them are pretty good.
everything else is pretty forgettable. you'll want to do enough of the chadly stuff to get the best materias from his 'store', but you only ever need to do a handful of towers if you're doing the protorelic and summon stuff as well so it's not too bad.
i don't know about being overleveled because i played the game on dynamic where everything scales to your level, which was a lot of fun.

I think they made the abilities broken at the expense of materia. materia is shit compared to most abilities and basic materia combos dont even work.
On one hand the abilities are really cool, but materia is basically a red herring that's a pain in the ass to manage with all the character swapping and then it turns out its not even that good.
I agree. I stopped caring about the materia early on in the game, ended up just buying MP/HP up for everyone and a few other blues/purples. The only time I'm using magic is healing. Maybe barrier if I'm feeling bored.

also materia shits all over weapon skills/abilities in terms of raw DPS if you're using -ga spells on enemies with weaknesses.
Seriously that shit will do 8k+, and you can doublecast it with arcane ward if Aerith is around.
They did crank up the MP usage though, and offensive -ga spells cost 2 ATB instead of 1 so it's a bit harder to just use the -ga spells, but they're still way more powerful than weapons skills.
Weapon skills, on the other hand, are fun as frick to use, so frick the DPS there's only one single DPS check in the entire game.

aerith with a fully powered first strike to instantly use radiant ward into atb ward into arcane ward and then blasting ga spells can melt many bosses healthbars, the atb ward massively speeds up the other party members atb too

Rebirth is the single best open world experience that I've played strictly for the fact that all of the open world shit ties back into one another, and is part of the overall worlds lore and is generally somewhat engaging, and has a legitimately in lore reason for it happening.
Compared to literally every other open world game I've played where they have 1 of those at the absolute best.
It's not perfect by any means, but it's a far better use of open world filler than something like Witcher 3 or Ghosts or Horizon ever had.

They all split out from the prime timeline, and are all absorbed back into the prime timeline. As of now, the only thing that we know stuck around from the infinite non-prime timelines that were merged is Zack, who wakes up in Aeriths church in the prime timeline at the end of the game.

Zack is a fricking moron that has no idea what's going on in every single iteration he's been shown, including Rebirth. I mean the dude even shouts WHAT IS GOING ON at the end when the timelines are all merging together and the big sephiroth fight is happening.

When Tifa is asking where Cloud has been for 5 years isn't she supposed to say 7 years? I can't tell if this scene was Cloud gaslighting himself to make Tifa say 5 but it seems like a mistake.
She's questioning Cloud's memories, because Cloud can recall back to 5 years ago.
In the OG she doesn't reveal it's been seven years until the lifestream I believe. Either that or the crater. She also doesn't confront Cloud at all about it in the OG though(Cloud actually asks her if he's remembering everything right and she dodges the question or lies) so Tifa questioning it at all is a big change from teh original.

the game is also legitimately one of the biggest world maps for a non-mmo open world game.
and it's nearly 100% seemless once you get to chapter 13 and have the bronco in the water.
it was actually staggeringly impressive when i realized that it truly was one massive open world during chapter 13.
What annoys me is that Rebirth and the 3rd game will likely be the last good Final Fantasy games, since I imagine they'll learn absolutely nothing from these and continue to completely re-invent the wheel with FF17 forward.
At least this is a nice little farewell trilogy to go out on a good note to remember FF by.
they for sure need to carry over the combat system into whatever they're doing for 17. remake was a good start, but the couple of tweaks they made in rebirth and the addition of synergy abilities/skills really really elevates the combat in the game to something truly amazing and unique.
it absolutely blows the combat systems of 15 and 16 away, and imo rivals KH2s near-perfection feel.
Maybe they'll remake X, IX, or VI next. I like the odds of those being good relative to whatever XVII turns into.
