If you get to the Ice Cavern (about 2-3 hrs in) and don't like it, you won't like it. It's my fav game, but not everyone's and that's fine.

It's an alright game. It's intentionally trying to call back to the style of the SNES FF games after 7 and 8. Personally, I think 4/5/6/7/8 are better.

yeah what this anon said. it was designed specifically to be old school and relatively generic.

Its good enough. Gameplay and combat is fine.

Some of the characters felt to cartoonish. Was hard to relate to any of them, especially when the story bits try to go deep or be impactful

for the most part, you got it right. FF9 is a "return to form" where the setting and theme reverts back to generic fantasy fare, as opposed to the progress from 4 to 8.

the publisher suits probably decided "return to form" wasn't profitable because of 9.
in reality the release was a playstation game in the first year PlayStation 2 released.
the suits fricked up and didn't want to own their bad timing on the release, wanting to churn out a game every year (2000 would have been the year to skip). Because of this 10 was the last true Final Fantasy game of the franchise.
after that the suits pushed the franchise towards MMO real-time style gameplay to copy the success of MMO games (ignoring that the gameplay didn't translate well into single player experiences)

I think I recognized this intuitively and stopped there

it was a good swan song honestly.
I got it working on an emulator a few years back just because I wanted to play the frickin blitzball minigame.
but yeah, basically the gaming industry is dead. the giants are too set in how they're going to do shit going forward ($$ dictates the course), and the little indies are lost among hordes of shitty phone game makers and vaporware pay to beta (early-access) scams/failures.
and like a fricking spider you have sweet baby inc type shit skulking around making deals to "help" the little developers stay afloat in exchange for adding a homosexual romance option to roleplaying games designed for kids to practice being heroic.
          shit insidious as frick.

I just bought 12 on sale, the zodiac whatever version on steam. It was the only other one I’ve ever considered playing.

12 is worth playing imo, as a guy that also quit the franchise after 10 and tried 12 way later. The combat is pretty shit but at least the mechanics are somewhat unique I guess, but the selling point is everything about the setting. It's just a memorably creative fantasy world that has all the aesthetics and production design working in cohesion to result in a great package. The story sucks too, so as an RPG it's in a weird place where gameplay and story are shit, which you'd think would sink it entirely, but everything else about it salvages it for me to be a thumbs up.

The other mainline FF afterwards are shit though, yeah SE has creatively been dead in the water for a long time.

On topic of 9, it was literally built as (well executed) nostalgia-bait 25 years ago, so I think a lot of the ideas and context are going to be lost on players today. Who does this game cater to that hasn't already played it?

they ended up with a mediocre MMO and a bunch of clunky half-assed action-adventure games that didn't know what they were trying to be. but with final fantasy lore-isms like chocobos. Kingdom Hearts type shit and Last Remnant, but at least those were their own thing, for the shit carrying the Final Fantasy name it killed the franchise. the customer reviews were merciless, these were not Final Fantasy games.

    >is this shit?
No. It's overall good. Fantastic aesthetics and soundtrack. Likeable characters. The first two discs kept me on the edge of my seat due to face paced, high tension story of a rapidly evolving war. You're constantly being swept from setpiece to setpiece and discovering new kingdoms and watching stuff blow up. The ride comes to an end a few hours into disc 3 and you return to Lindblum and the story becomes about following a gay through half a dozen dungeons, at which point you realize that the combat and character building is meh and there is nothing to explore, but again good aesthetics and pleasant personalities carry the game. Not shit at all like a Tales game or Ao no Kiseki.

yes, it's shit. your first impression is correct. the people who really like it are either trannies who love the homosexual black mage character or people who haven't actually played it.

Absolutely, you got the rest of the game on your first read of the dialogue, setting, and everything. There's one twist but it's mostly forgettable dogwater

I never got past disc 2.
Recently tried it again (I'm the PSP guy who had to dissemble my PSP to get the trigger working). Got to Disc 3 - Ready to enter Ipsen Castle and put it down again.
I don't know why I just can't find the will to complete it, when I'm actually enjoying the game it goes, 'Nope! Now separate your party and play it my way'. It's a constant source of annoyance for me. That and the damn trance system.

Back in the day when it was new, I don't think I ever got past disc 1. Years ago I ended up emulating 1-10 in one big replay and finished it. It was ok but pretty forgettable and not compelling in the way that 7 or 8 or 10 were. I'd rank pretty much any other FF from 4 to 10 as superior.

Weakest out of the PSX games by far. I would skip it tbh, it's a game I never recommend.

It's an improvement over FF8 because combat isn't an entirely vestigial appendage of some bad movie.
