I still think 1 is my favorite, but I replayed 2 a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I went in blind and just played around with it and I found it quite fun.
I like that the dungeons are difficult and you often have to retreat and resupply. It feels more dungeon crawly like FF1 was. After this game the series is much less of a dungeon crawler.

well no i would say it's a final fantasy game actually. i say this because the title is final fantasy 2 and not saga 2.

Barely, the only thing that's there is a rough prototype of the stat system.
If Final Fantasy 2 counts as a SaGa game so does Final Fantasy 1.

FF1 definitely counts as a Saga game

Yeah no I don't see it. Neither mechanically, nor story-wise, nor structurally for that matter.

He's not wrong, it might not be immediately evident but there's a lot of DNA in common.
The focus on character/party creation right at the beginning of the game, the D&D roots and references, minimalist storytelling and various tropes like witches, fairies and mermaids are things that FF abandoned very quickly, SaGa still uses those to this day.
I still wouldn't call it a SaGa game because while some elements are in there the game as a whole doesn't really feel like SaGa, but it's undeniable that it has Kawazu's fingerprints all over, FF2 is kinda similar, you can see there's some elements but as a whole the game doesn't really feel like SaGa.

          Anonymous

Yeah no shit there's a lot of commonalities in super early JRPGs made by the same company (and likely a lot of the same people). But the distinction still is rather clear I'd say.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that's what I said, you can see Kawazu's involvement but it's still no SaGa, it's just what happens when developers with a strong personal taste work on different games, you can see the fingerprints but the games are still pretty different.
It's like saying Legend of Mana or FFCC are SaGa games, they're not, they're Kawazu's games but have little in common with SaGa outside of certain elements Kawazu really likes and uses in most of his games.

And it's considered the worst FF game by far. Really makes you think, SaGa shiteaters.

8 and 10-2 are considered he worst.

The only people who think 2 is the worst are people who haven't played many Final Fantasy games.

No, 2 is considered the worst, followed by 15 and 8. 2 is the universally agreed upon stinker, not some hidden or misunderstood gem.

Oh come on now. SaGa is not even that popular. Nor is it shilled all that hard (if at all). There's a small and not even that vocal but VERY dedicated community and that's it. Ain't no way they (we) count as drones.

Thanks to pixel remaster and the option to turn off encounters, I managed to beat the game doing mandatory fights only, aka 18 in total. This makes me qualified to say one thing:
        FF2 is really good

        and FF8 is the best.

I personally consider 6 and 9 to be the worst. It is worth mentioning that majority of FF6 fans are almost identical to Chrono Trigger fans - they never beat the game they apparently like.

          Anonymous

I like FF6 because I played it as a kid. I am unwilling to replay it because I am afraid of ruining the nostalgic memories.
FF2 I only played recently and I thought it was pretty cool for an 80s jrpg. I relied heavily on the berserk spell. I'd probably be complaining about this game being a slog if I didn't find that spell.

        >8 and 10-2 are considered he worst.
10-2 gets more hate than it deserves.
Toriyama isn't a great director, he's not some god, or someone who deserves our ire for being put in charge of XIII which was a mess of a project with no outline, then forced to work on TWO ENTIRE SEQUELS BECAUSE SOMEONE COULDN'T GET HIS SHIT IN GEAR. XIII & XIII-2 are irredeemable but Lightning Returns is a good romp with some very interesting mechanics with a layer of peak FF schizo story.

        >The only people who think 2 is the worst are people who haven't played many Final Fantasy games.
Out of games that are hated for being job system games or being stat & build reliant.

V gets a light degree of hate for not being VI or IV; mostly forgotten by westernbabs.
X-2 gets hate for its lazy story by X-babs, it takes risks with its systems and is ironically more of an FF game than the game it's a sequel to.
XI gets hate for being the best of II & V while being an MMO that they missed out on but is undoubtedly a "hidden gem"
XII gets hate for not being VII or X, SE fricked it over with that presentation before it released and the delays hurt it. It was an incomplete game on release. There's also downright weirdos who get filtered by the gambit system.
Finally II gets hate from morons who either didn't play it, didn't engage with it, followed a guide or are parroting a listicle opinion.
Where I would criticise II is in it's approach as a story focused game, it was the first to take that mantle but limitations really hurt the scope of what could be implemented.

Finally for VIII's hate. Kitase tried something different, took some risks and it didn't work out. It's still an interesting game to engage with with an amazing soundtrack and art direction but it is absolutely the lowest point in the series with compilation of 7 & IV the after years. It's why we have someone memeing VIII being a great game constantly.

PS1 Origins is the only remake that isn't neutered. You can mod the original sprites and difficulty back into the PC version of the Pixel Remaster, then you have a native 16:9 version of the game that supports 144 fps.

        Anonymous

        >neutered
What's wrong with, for example, the GBA one? Seems to have more content than the PS1.

GBA onwards there's a general rework of the stat system, vancian magic gets replaced by MPs and overall the game math is very different as a result.

Origins it is then. Or, hell, maybe even the original.

You're fine with Origins, there's some small changes in that too but they're not bad, outside of Accuracy being removed it's mostly about some enemies being buffed, because your spells actually work now so you're a lot more powerful than the original.
Same with FF2, Origins is still the better version of the games.

I don’t play games. I get my opinions from popular YouTubers then post what I think is the majority opinion here to try to get attention I so desperately like in my personal life. Sometimes I post the minority opinion for controversy and attention. That works too. Bottom line is: I’m a lonely, broken human being, cursed by bad genetics and crippling autism. I’m also trans btw.

I really like FF2, and don't get the vitriolic hate for it. I can understand it not standing out, but it does nothing offensive to justify treating it as if it killed your mother like most online opinions suggest.

I like the dark tone, love the music, the cast is solid, the plot never slogs, and the combat is just a standard JRPG with a slightly gimmicky leveling system that you can just ignore for the most part and treat the same as any other in the series.

Nice to see some love for FFII for once.

I think a lot of hate comes from morons who never bothered to understand how the game works and played it in a dumbfrick way.

I have noticed that any game that does something even the slightest bit different than
        >level up automatically does everything for you, zero variables and zero planning or thought required
sends FF players into a frothing rage

For me it's kind of the opposite issue. Autism forces me to play/level up in the most optimal way possible and in FF2 that meant just whacking other party members for ages.

So you have the stupid autism instead of the savant autism that would lead you to realize that's not the optimal way to gain stats?

I like that II actually gives you a bad guy on your team. He doesn't repent, doesn't apologize, doesn't try to act like nothing happened, he just joins you to beat someone badder than him and then fricks off.
    >Leon won't you please stay with us and be a good guy???
    >Nah.
