I don't think that there's any character in the remake that is the direct person or has the entire memory and mindset of the original characters but I think certain characters like Sephiroth and Aerith are being fed information from the timeline more so than other characters. Clouds information is being slowly shared to him whereas Aerith and Sephiroth have gotten chunks of memories and information prior to the game starting. Long story short, none of the characters in this game are the same characters from previous games.

Theres a big misconception about aerith death, and that is that she HAS to die, as if she knew she needed to die to control the lifestream, and thats just not simply the truth.
She died because the story needed weight to it, and have sephiroth impale the cute flower girl is a lot of weight.
The lifestream was needed at the end because the party realized too late that sephiroth was blocking Holy from triggering, and thats when aerith gives the last save.
I think that now, they wanted to give a message of "things have to die someday, just let her go" and transform the casuality into something that NEEDED to happen. Still fits perfectly with the themes of the game, but her being needed to die now doesnt mean she had to die in the OG.

The point is that Cloud's gang were actually in the right despite their motivations, and Rufus was using the flimsiest of excuses to execute the people that would end up saving the planet.

But after that Hojo does what Hojo does due to the "death" of Rufus (and thus the entire Shirna Inc.) and the subsequent chaos among Shinra's remnants, so they have to be stopped.
Say what you will about Rufus' attempt at a "Rule of Fear", but if you look at the things he actually did... he didn't really seem to follow-up on that. All the truly horrible stuff happened while his father was still in charge, and when Rufus took over he actually somehow managed to even put a least on Hojo of all people, at least Hojo didn't seem to have done anything noticeably repugnant we were shown until after Rufus "died".

My belief is Aerith dies again or is only allowed to live in some bad end alternate universe/timeline. They're definitely going to milk it until the end of the third game, yes, but reversing arguably the most iconic videogame death ever is going to cheapen the 20+ year narrative and main theme of the game in a way that I imagine not even Nomura/Nojima/whoever would ever consider it.
