Barrett and Aerith have held inputs for their basic attacks. Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie require multiple presses. Dodging isn't held, you have to press circle every time you want to avoid something, though guarding is better most of the time since it builds up your ability meter, especially with Cloud's with counterattack in Punisher mode.
it's a bit easy and trivial in a sense when you aren't doing real damage but simply building up stagger in order to do damage.. but in reality the original game was not some magical combat system that put you on the edge of your seat at every moment. the flash and style of the animations and particle effects in the combat is satisfying to play and it's simple enough that scaling up the difficulty with some mods can make the game a real treat. I really wish there was no such thing as the stagger bar though. Just let me do damage and make the enemies dangerous.
I like the idea of enemies having triggers you have to hit to make them open to more damage. I kinda just wish it ended there though, you hit whatever their weakness is and then for a bit they take more damage. Remove the stagger bar where they just fall over and are helpless for like 5-10 seconds.

Do you know what's conspicuously absent here? Things that actually happen during the plot of the game. (You) list a bunch of backstory and then skip straight to finding Cloud in a wheelchair which is over 3/4 of the way into the game. This is why I can't take them seriously, everything that you could take romantically is just told to the player as back story. They get hardly anything in the actual plot of the game. They're the ultimate "told but not shown" couple if you can even call them that.

Aerith both dies and survives in Rebirth. After her funeral, the camera zooms in on her face underwater and she suddenly opens her eyes and wakes up in Zack timeline. The end. The story continues in part 3
At the end of the Remake after defeating ghosts, it shows Zack surviving with mascot dog being different. Zack then carries the comatose Cloud to Midgar (in the og Zack died outside Midgar). The new content has shown Zack interacting with Biggs and Kyrie and other people in Midgar. Also it's shown Zack in Aerith's house and Zack interacting with unconscious Aerith in Midgar. So diferent timeline where Zack did survive and Cloud stayd comatosed without interacting with Tifa which initially brought Cloud back from the veggie state

I was one of those people way back when, and I got the remaster day 1 because of it. Holy hell that game is like 90% bad, the remaster is saved by making the combat half decent.
It does not earn its legitimately good and emotional ending at all.
The ending is a guilty pleasure to me because even though it's really melodramatic (Zack being lifted into the fricking sky while Jpop plays in the background) it was still able to make me sad, but yeah the whole game leading up to it is not good and the ending can't salvage it
I remember actually liking Nibelheim and the stuff after where Zack is carting Cloud's comatose body around. But then when it reached the final dungeon, I think I got tired of the random encounters and never actually finished it.
It's one of the backbones of the Compilation so if you're terminally consumer you can't really concede it was a mistake without having to entertain the thought that the entire project was a bad idea.

The Compilation was just material before and after the events of FF7 whereas this is now hinting at an endless multi-verse where we can right the wrongs of hte past. My strong feeling is that the game will end with Alt-Zack and Alt-Aerith teaming up, and we team up with Nice Sephiroth to defeat the ultimate Sephiroth who knows the timelines and is trying to alter them. The multi-verse started to take off in Marvel when the game was being developed, so this makes sense.

FF8 is this rushed storyline where they tried to capitalize on the FF7 success and felt they were streamlining the storyline. Instead of a Childhood friend and Flower girl for love interests, they just merged them into one. Rinoa is Tifa + Aerith rolled into one, and the love interest from the get go. But the love story in 8 and 9 are just dreadful and bog the game down, while the romance in 7 is so under-stated it has nuance and doesn't over-stay it's welcome. You can interpret it in many different ways and your player actions determines how close Aerith and Cloud even were.
If they don't go on that date on the Gondola then they basically never were more than casual acquaintances. If they dated, then you could see them as about to blossom into a real relationship, before it was cut down. Tifa in contrast, could be the true love from the get-go, the loyal childhood friend, or Cloud's back up b***h.

The game itself is almost insulting, really. It's almost sad the way squeenix practically begs for your money in five different ways every day just by logging in, begs some more in middle of it when you level something up or whatever, but only readily wants to sell you consumable materials.

It WOULD be a viable way to sate both sides of the "Aerith lives/dies" debate: why not both and have her be a timey-wimey Schrodinger's cat? I think it would also lend credence to the "defy fate" theme that people initially dismissed due to time jannies and retroactively justify the Remake trilogy as the finale of the Compendium. I think the focus on the Lfiestream may be connected to such an instance and the trilogy could be a "golden ending" of sorts.

Half the plot and memorable scenes in the original were ruined by time shit and tiem ghosts for no reason. This would just be a continuation of all of that. And any new people were just needlessly confused by everything.
I remember hearing sakaguchi was inspired to work in a story about losing someone because he lost a relative. You know, an actually relatable bit of tragedy that makes stories interesting.
Genuine speculation: If she survives this game, the story will probably progress normally in Part 3 but then bad stuff will happen because she altered her fate, and Aerith will realize that she has to die to make everything go back to normal. Then after beating the final boss she will disappear (like the end of FF10) after giving a sad drawn-out farewell speech to everyone. The end.
That way they get to have their cake and eat it too: they subverted expectations by letting her live past her original death scene, but she still dies by the end. I can see them doing something like that.

The main issue that Aerith being dead is a huge part of Advent Children. Cloud has basically disconnected from everyone around him emotionally due to the guilt he feels over Aerith's death. Without that aspect, you might as well just call it something completely new.

In OG 7, he wants to basically help his "mother" consume all life on this planet before moving on to the next one.
It's unknown what his motivation is this time around, especially since at the end of Remake, in something that wasn't able to translate to English, Sephiroth briefly talks like himself pre-insanity after the final boss (a japanese pronouns thing).
I still don't understand what Sephiroth wants to do, but what is his true purpose?
Original story he thinks he's a Centra, with Jenova as his mom, and he takes over her body and its cells. It's convenient that her goal and his goal end up being identical.
The remake smacks of KH, and this is one of the many reasons why. Like the whole remake coukd have been a KH game in which the KH characters travel to midgar to recruit cloud and his thirsty ladies for their cause by helping them change the course of the OG timeline. I was half expecting mickey mouse or goofy to pop up during my playthrough of this mess of a game.

It had, in relative terms, mature themes concerning loss. It is also one of the few games (in general, not just FF), that gave you a character, made you care about that character, made you invest in that character (gear, materia, lvling etc.) just as much as any other character, and then killed her off at the halfway mark.
Add onto this that the game had, overall, good pacing (especially the midgar opening), fun combat, a big vilain with an interesting background story posing a credible threat to the planet and you have yourself a good game. It felt like you were on an actual adventure slowly uncovering the truth.
It was also quite clever in making the player think shinra is the big bad evil you'll be fighting in Midgar, to then reveal shinra is a nothing burger and Midgar merely a blip on the map.
It's also the one with the most over the top anime aesthetic so between the mature themes, the zany fun and the extreme aesthetics in a "cyberpunk"-ish world (which at the time was not yet an overused thing) made it quite memorable too

Do you know what's conspicuously absent here? Things that actually happen during the plot of the game. (You) list a bunch of backstory and then skip straight to finding Cloud in a wheelchair which is over 3/4 of the way into the game. This is why I can't take them seriously, everything that you could take romantically is just told to the player as back story. They get hardly anything in the actual plot of the game. They're the ultimate "told but not shown" couple if you can even call them that.
At some point, women will be willing to settle for a decent financially stable person. I get it, you're the best version of yourself and you worked for it and are getting no kickback. But you have to just hope it will work out in the future even if it's late.

What's up with the weird pacing of the Remake trilogy?
After Rebirth, there won't be a whole lot of the story left to tell/reimagine. Yet at the same time, Remake was literally just the first couple hours of the OG with filler added in. What the frick were they thinking? Just milk the series for more money?
Midgar and the Forgotten Capital are probably the 2 most obvious break points. The just didn't use Remake's run time to expand on shit that actually mattered and made us run around looking for cats instead. The forgotten capital is about 2/3 into the game so there should be just enough plot left to make another.

Yeah the entire opening is out, Rebirth starts where Remake ended. Zack is dragging Cloud to Midgar, he sees on TV the image of Aerith being loaded away into the choppa from the trailer. Then you see the scene of him handing Cloud to Yuffie 2.0 and running after Aerith, shit goes crazy afterward he throws a fricking pole into the helicopter, the thing goes down and then you see the scene of him holding her from the trailer
They both kill Aerith and save her. In the end of Rebirth Aerith dies and the party gives her funeral. The game ends with camera zooming in on Aerith's face and her opening her eyes and waking up in Zack's timeline

Ive only ever watched gameplay for like a minute. Is it like ff15 where you just hold a button to continue attacking or are there actual button inputs and dodges you have to do?

Barrett and Aerith have held inputs for their basic attacks. Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie require multiple presses. Dodging isn't held, you have to press circle every time you want to avoid something, though guarding is better most of the time since it builds up your ability meter, especially with Cloud's with counterattack in Punisher mode.
it's a bit easy and trivial in a sense when you aren't doing real damage but simply building up stagger in order to do damage.. but in reality the original game was not some magical combat system that put you on the edge of your seat at every moment. the flash and style of the animations and particle effects in the combat is satisfying to play and it's simple enough that scaling up the difficulty with some mods can make the game a real treat. I really wish there was no such thing as the stagger bar though. Just let me do damage and make the enemies dangerous.
I like the idea of enemies having triggers you have to hit to make them open to more damage. I kinda just wish it ended there though, you hit whatever their weakness is and then for a bit they take more damage. Remove the stagger bar where they just fall over and are helpless for like 5-10 seconds.

Do you know what's conspicuously absent here? Things that actually happen during the plot of the game. (You) list a bunch of backstory and then skip straight to finding Cloud in a wheelchair which is over 3/4 of the way into the game. This is why I can't take them seriously, everything that you could take romantically is just told to the player as back story. They get hardly anything in the actual plot of the game. They're the ultimate "told but not shown" couple if you can even call them that.

The new content has shown Zack interacting with Biggs and Kyrie and other people in Midgar. Also it's shown Zack in Aerith's house and Zack interacting with unconscious Aerith in Midgar. The Compilation was just material before and after the events of FF7 whereas this is now hinting at an endless multi-verse where we can right the wrongs of hte past. My strong feeling is that the game will end with Alt-Zack and Alt-Aerith teaming up, and we team up with Nice Sephiroth to defeat the ultimate Sephiroth who knows the timelines and is trying to alter them. The multi-verse started to take off in Marvel when the game was being developed, so this makes sense.

FF8 is this rushed storyline where they tried to capitalize on the FF7 success and felt they were streamlining the storyline. Instead of a Childhood friend and Flower girl for love interests, they just merged them into one. Rinoa is Tifa + Aerith rolled into one, and the love interest from the get go. But the love story in 8 and 9 are just dreadful and bog the game down, while the romance in 7 is so under-stated it has nuance and doesn't over-stay it's welcome. You can interpret it in many different ways and your player actions determines how close Aerith and Cloud even were.
If they don't go on that date on the Gondola then they basically never were more than casual acquaintances. If they dated, then you could see them as about to blossom into a real relationship, before it was cut down. Tifa in contrast, could be the true love from the get-go, the loyal childhood friend, or Cloud's back up b***h.

It WOULD be a viable way to sate both sides of the "Aerith lives/dies" debate: why not both and have her be a timey-wimey Schrodinger's cat? Half the plot and memorable scenes in the original were ruined by time shit and tiem ghosts for no reason. This would just be a continuation of all of that. And any new people were just needlessly confused by everything.
I remember hearing sakaguchi was inspired to work in a story about losing someone because he lost a relative. You know, an actually relatable bit of tragedy that makes stories interesting.
Genuine speculation: If she survives this game, the story will probably progress normally in Part 3 but then bad stuff will happen because she altered her fate, and Aerith will realize that she has to die to make everything go back to normal. Then after beating the final boss she will disappear (like the end of FF10) after giving a sad drawn-out farewell speech to everyone. The end.

It's unknown what his motivation is this time around, especially since at the end of Remake, in something that wasn't able to translate to English, Sephiroth briefly talks like himself pre-insanity after the final boss (a japanese pronouns thing).
Original story he thinks he's a Centra, with Jenova as his mom, and he takes over her body and its cells. It's convenient that her goal and his goal end up being identical.

The writers probably wrote him in part 1 as a Mystery Box, a lot of Kingdom Hearts was done the same way.
The remake smacks of KH, and this is one of the many reasons why. Like the whole remake coukd have been a KH game in which the KH characters travel to midgar to recruit cloud and his thirsty ladies for their cause by helping them change the course of the OG timeline. I was half expecting mickey mouse or goofy to pop up during my playthrough of this mess of a game.

Add onto this that the game had, overall, good pacing (especially the midgar opening), fun combat, a big vilain with an interesting background story posing a credible threat to the planet and you have yourself a good game. It felt like you were on an actual adventure slowly uncovering the truth.
It was also quite clever in making the player think shinra is the big bad evil you'll be fighting in Midgar, to then reveal shinra is a nothing burger and Midgar merely a blip on the map.
It's also the one with the most over the top anime aesthetic so between the mature themes, the zany fun and the extreme aesthetics in a "cyberpunk"-ish world (which at the time was not yet an overused thing) made it quite memorable too

Its marketing campaign in the West combined with its innovations allowed it to become the perfect storm at the time for the gaming industry. Having such an industry-wide impact automatically means it's going to stick with the people who were around then which makes for ez continuos free advertising for it

Cloud and Tifa saw and did shit together and saw friends and family die together. Granted Aeris and Cloud experienced a ton of shit too but it may as well be nothing compared to Tifa. Like what, you spend maybe two weeks with Aeris before she gets shanked? And with zero downtime (let's be real Costa Del Sol doesn't actually happen just like snowboarding doesn't actually happen)
