In Remake's case the problem is that VII's designs are 2D anime and the ingame renders are faithful to that, but Remake is hyperrealistic modern 3D so everyone looks like asian cosplayers and the acting is like japanese live action TV acting.

Since I didn't play the demo it's my first time doing the flashback section and I don't get what the hate was about. I liked it. It was cool seeing nice guy Sephiroth and the little moments where you can see one of the grunts do something and you can tell that's actually Cloud were neat.

One complaint I've got of the combat so far. I wish it was more intuitive on when you can cancel attacks to block. Using Cloud's punisher to counter is cool but it feels kind of useless because you need like 2 seconds of leadup to finish whatever animation you were currently in before you can actually block with every enemy having half a second of windup for their attacks meaning you pretty much just need to be sitting and waiting for an attack to counter. It doesn't feel like it flows very well in combat. Though my memory is hazy I feel like that was a complaint I had in the first part too.

I kind of like the expanded on ending of Aerith's death. As in Cloud clearly being far off his rocker but trying to rally as a leader, and with the rest of the group clearly walking on egg shells because they see him fully as a schizo freakshow who is mentally fricked in the head. Obviously part 3 will have the resolution where he get's fully mind broken and then Tifa dunks him in the lifestream.

It doesn't need an open world. It only ever needed relatively small hub areas fit to bursting with content. Kalm and surrounding wilderness. Costa del Sol and surrounding wilderness. and so and so forth.
Exploring the world map was where you spent half your fricking time in FF7 with a lot of secrets and optional things to find on it. Spanning an entire continent for your travels, even abstracted to a world map, feels way better than just cutting away from travel. The problem these games have is they want everything to be consistent gameplay wise. They need to realize a game can have varied gameplay. It's okay if we pull back from person-scaled world for adventuring around a map.
And you can pack all of those secrets into a dense hub area separated by chapters and have an overall objectively better experience.
You cannot have the feeling of exploring an entire world by being locked into city hubs.

Finished chapter 2. Pretty much the only thing I think was bad was the pointless "suck up the Mako" shit in the flashback. Outside of that it's all been meh to outright great. I'm having fun.
