When the party stumbles upon the Zolom fricking skewered and ready for the grill, it shows how much of a threat he is (because on a first playthrough, presumably, you tried to fight the zolom and got fricking obliterated). Visual fricking story-telling.
In RE(still)Birth, you already have a good idea who Sephiroth is because since hour one of REmake, he's been a plot point, as opposed to after getting all the way through Midgar in the OG.

Big killer for me was seeing nothing transfers over from the last game. But I guess this saves me from buying a PS5 now, I can just buy Rebirth when it comes to PC.
You know what really gets me about 16? The skillwheel limits + the cooldown for skills. Combat's a drag you can't speed up via skilled play because your skills coming back from use is the limiting factor and there's no way to speed them up. If you could get cooldown on parry/dodge that would have helped a ton, but you don't. FF7R's skills all accessible, but limited by building ATB, and ATB coming faster by dealing damage has always just been more engaging. Legit playing Rebirth I just feel all of the mistakes 16 did in combat alone, not even accounting for how their worlds differ in travel/side quest/events.
Even taking the sort of brisk nature of Japanese conversation and dialogue into account, the broader strokes of Nojima's stories are just not very good.
But he's THE FF writer so we're kind of stuck with him and his moronation until he dies

even re4 remake while it's different in a lot of way but it the story progression ended up the same as the original game most of the cut stuff ended up in the dlc, the Aerith death scene is really insulting at this point and it's one of the most memorable stuff in gaming.

I am not drawn further into a work when the protagonists stand there mouth agape reading a note from the killer "Majes" and just can't believe they can't figure out the real identity so they go and ask the local Lord, "James" if he could possibly know. Drooling out the rest of their limited brain matter on the way.
One of the only good instances of something similar in Japanese games that I've seen was The Great Ace Attorney 2, where you find out your friend from the first game lived, and a mysterious robed and masked, silent character starts showing up with very similar mannerisms, but on the enemy's side.
And then your character meets him for the very first time and they're all like "What the frick is that you, buddy," and proceed to waste no more time pretending the guy's identity is a mystery.
Wasn't there some post-FF7 light novel that showed Rufus surviving? Since they're already using some of the supplementary material for the remake, it seems likely he'll survive if they follow that too.
Character DLCs would be the way to go if they're going with OG cast for main games but still want to give players other playable characters. Intergrade had Sonon, for example, even though he's not directly controllable and was just there to test the Synergy mechanic. That way, Part 3 will still have the original cast but then players wouldn't b***h about Rufus never being playable.

I'd argue it's intended for you to draw the connection immediately and the mystery is the buildup to what will happen after.
Like a murder mystery show revealing the killer at the beginning, and the mystery is how they get caught or why the killer did it.
I am not drawn further into a work when the protagonists stand there mouth agape reading a note from the killer "Majes" and just can't believe they can't figure out the real identity so they go and ask the local Lord, "James" if he could possibly know. Drooling out the rest of their limited brain matter on the way.
One of the only good instances of something similar in Japanese games that I've seen was The Great Ace Attorney 2, where you find out your friend from the first game lived, and a mysterious robed and masked, silent character starts showing up with very similar mannerisms, but on the enemy's side.
