What is the PVP in this game like? I loved doing Alterac Valley in WoW on my Nelf Hunter, stealthing around killing people who try to stealth cap. Haven't played an MMO in years and years and years now.
It's not as good. FF PVP is really bad. Rest of the game is fun though.

The mechanic is easy. The only problem I did had was the custerfrick of waymarks, effects, aoe marks amd kb mark not allowing to see how to position correctly.
That leads to a bad push that sometimes you can leave you in a bad position and unable to recover. It is not hard but it can get complicated to see well at that part.

They exist for people who want to be part of "The RP Community" because they heard XIV has a good one, but they're mostly twitch immigrants and are too irony-poisoned and insecure to create their own characters and actually RP so they just tab out and talk on discord while pretending to be social and they think that makes them da real epic RPers. It's kind of like calling yourself a hardcore raider because you cleared Golbez once.
Over the past two years the Balmung/Mateus RP community has become extremely insular because of it and you pretty much have to know someone to find out the locations of any of the actual RP events and venues because twitchBlack folk were running into public RP events to plug their streams.
I fricking hate the XIV RP community so much it's unreal. It's either people just socializing OOC while occasionally referring to something in-lore or it's a bunch of Gaia Online tier cringe. After trying hosting multiple venues, I've just given up.

I'm finally down to my last 3 jobs that need leveling, except for Blue Mage in 6.45, and I can't wait for it to be over. My playtime will probably significantly drop after that since it'll mostly just be weekly stuff I'll do but it's been a great ride getting "caught up" with everything and being able to take a longer break in the lead up to 7.0 without worry about missing or "wasting" stuff will be lovely.

I truly hope with every fiber of my being that Island Sanctuary is finished with 6.5 and is never touched again. As time has gone on it's become abundantly clear that they went with Island Sanctuary for the 6.x patches cause it was "easy" filler content that wouldn't put strain on the team while people were working on XVI.

12 to 16 is actually easier than previous patches because you get so much free exp from renovations and extra new buildings. I saved up 2 weeks of my workshop beforehand and it got me more than halfway to rank 13.
Grinding to rank 12 on previous patch took me 1 whole day of pure grinding macro, grinding to rank 16 only took me 12 hours pure grinding of macro because of all the free exp
I actually appreciate Island Sanctuary more now that I just use it to get materia for my crafter and gatherer. Way better than the beast tribes in terms of exhcange rate.

A game that charges monthly with extra fees and encourages daily play should have enough to do to not feel boring after 30 minutes or repetitive before even reaching what the game considers completion. A better focus on lasting events and new shit people want to do because it's enjoyable seems like a better idea than what we're getting. What’s funny s that i’m playing an other mmo right, classic on Turtle and the leveling difference between the two is staggering. In the past week i’ve grouped with hundreds of people, made at least ten friends i play regularry with now, there is actual reason and stuff to do in the overworld, pvp is fun. Even simple things like throwing a 30 minute buff on someone only for them to buff you in return feels nice in my tummy. Playing as a pld and saving people that overextended themselves with my heals got me a goofy looking shovel weapon even. Literally never experienced this in xiv.

Every expansion i level every job to max and then miss being able to do so. I love leveling the jobs for some ungodly reason, one of my favorite new expansion activities. Now that i'm done, i mostly log in daily to do some PVP.
for me the problem with leveling jobs is when you level all of them at 80 for example, the leveling to 90 it feels so empty because the barely get new abilities or skills in 10 levels

The "pets suck" meme is such a defeatist take. They sucked the one time they half tried it. It could still be done well, especially with the advancements in pets recently. Nobody is complaining about bahumut/carbuncle these days. Scholars aren't crying about eos. They just needed some optimization. We can still have a good pet class, people just need to get their heads out of their asses.
They sucked for the 8 years they tried them and steadily downplayed them the whole while. Nobody complaining about Bahamut/Carbuncle/Eos is the result of a straight decade of tinkering with pet AI and never reaching a satisfying conclusion with them.

Honestly I don't think I've ever liked pet classes or jobs in any game I've tried. The closest I've come was Maplestory with Mechanic and Wild Hunter, and both of those are "mounted" jobs and not pet jobs as such.
The problem was that the devs never tried to fix them. They just applied bandaids and minimized them so it wouldn't matter in the end anyways. Anytime there was a problem they just removed stuff until it was where we are today, pets are just a visual effect now. It's sad, this dev team is incapable of making any play styles beyond burst DPS. I'm just so frickin tired of burst meta.

Damage is king in this game and you had more than enough mit even back then that Flash wasn't gonna be your first mit option, deal with it. Same reason nobody ever boosted Dark Passenger on DRK.

i was very assiduous with flash when it was still around...
Pet classes can be fun when they're done well. I'd even accept something like ShB-era Summoner where the pet was mostly fire and forget and you had skills to command it to do special attacks, but it's otherwise pretty much immune to harm and basically just a fancy DoT you have.

This is where most FFXIV RP happens. It's all night club venues, modern clothing, Twitch DJs, etc. >The Final Fantasy RP Experience
People who adhere to the world and setting and actually partake in "realistic" adventuring and plots. Harder to find steady groups for this. >The Quicksands
This is where all the coomers go, and where much of FFXIV RP really is at- ERP. It's filled to the brim with this stuff. God help you if you also fall into the modbeast rabbit hole.
That's the broader stuff that a new RPer should know. Most people use Mateus for RP, or Balmung. I personally use Zalera and have my own little group I roll with. The world doesn't matter anymore thanks to travel.
Last note is to use the Party Finder to locate RP events. If you have any more questions go ahead and ask. I suggest finding people who want to RP the way you do to get started, though. They'll be able to get you up to pace quickly.
Also, a story skip is good if you want access to the whole world, but obviously you miss context of MSQ. Valuable option for a pure RP experience untainted by the main story which can and WILL ruin your ability to really RP as a character if you don't disregard it entirely.

Many people do that but I personally hate that format. I prefer one line of dialogue and one line of emotive/flavor/descriptive text between each interaction. The game is happening in real time after all. Slow RP is just so unpleasant. Lalafell are all considered children/pedos by most players in the West so it's hard to get by on that race. I just see them as gnomes but what do I know?
Hrothgar are considered gay furries, no exception.
Hyur are milquetoast normie human, though highlanders can be the strong type.
"Mommy" races include Elezen, Roe, Viera, and Highlander. Contrasting with that is female aura and miqote. Midlanders fall in the middle.
Elezen are typically seen as refined. Duskwight get shafted though.
Miqote men are typically subby twinks or gay or both but some of them have cool factor.
Roegadyn are rarely played straight, usually a joke race. But the authentic ones are worth their weight in gil and I'd love more of them.

I was there and a bunch of people in my FC got gatekept for about a week until people with Ala Mhigan gear got it in trial roulette and stomped him. You still frequently get groups that get wiped by Tidal Wave and just have constant deaths, even with power creep from gear and expansions raising potencies.
Difference being that entire XI was savage tier, even just traveling from one city to another so those that stick with it would grow and become better players. XIV on the other hand is baby shit easy tier for 95% of it's content so things like savage fights are an outlier and you can only get players like catgirls in H&M glam that unironically ask what's the red eye mechanic in a level 90 duty.

The mechanic is easy. The only problem I did had was the custerfrick of waymarks, effects, aoe marks amd kb mark not allowing to see how to position correctly.
That leads to a bad push that sometimes you can leave you in a bad position and unable to recover. It is not hard but it can get complicated to see well at that part.

I'm finally down to my last 3 jobs that need leveling, except for Blue Mage in 6.45, and I can't wait for it to be over. I truly hope with every fiber of my being that Island Sanctuary is finished with 6.5 and is never touched again. As time has gone on it's become abundantly clear that they went with Island Sanctuary for the 6.x patches cause it was "easy" filler content that wouldn't put strain on the team while people were working on XVI.

12 to 16 is actually easier than previous patches because you get so much free exp from renovations and extra new buildings. I saved up 2 weeks of my workshop beforehand and it got me more than halfway to rank 13.
Grinding to rank 12 on previous patch took me 1 whole day of pure grinding macro, grinding to rank 16 only took me 12 hours pure grinding of macro because of all the free exp
Yeah, actually getting renovations this patch helps immensely. Faster I can hit max and leave, the better. New hideout is cozy, though.
I actually appreciate Island Sanctuary more now that I just use it to get materia for my crafter and gatherer. Way better than the beast tribes in terms of exhcange rate.

I haven't felt this refreshed and excited to be playing other games in a long time. Feels gross when I look back at the last year and realize I could of been doing literally anything else
I don't agree with that anymore. A game that charges monthly with extra fees and encourages daily play should have enough to do to not feel boring after 30 minutes or repetitive before even reaching what the game considers completion. A better focus on lasting events and new shit people want to do because it's enjoyable seems like a better idea than what we're getting. I don't think people should be saying things like I'm glad I'll never have to do that again because I got the mount/costume/title if what we were getting was genuinely fun to play.
What’s funny s that i’m playing an other mmo right, classic on Turtle and the leveling difference between the two is staggering. In the past week i’ve grouped with hundreds of people, made at least ten friends i play regularry with now, there is actual reason and stuff to do in the overworld, pvp is fun. Even simple things like throwing a 30 minute buff on someone only for them to buff you in return feels nice in my tummy. Playing as a pld and saving people that overextended themselves with my heals got me a goofy looking shovel weapon even. Literally never experienced this in xiv.

Every expansion i level every job to max and then miss being able to do so. I love leveling the jobs for some ungodly reason, one of my favorite new expansion activities. Now that i'm done, i mostly log in daily to do some PVP.
for me the problem with leveling jobs is when you level all of them at 80 for example, the leveling to 90 it feels so empty because the barely get new abilities or skills in 10 levels
The incantation for Ultima means that the Ancients also believed in the seven hells and heavens at least at some point.
They believed in Zodiark so I imagine they had some kind of religion of their own with a similar hell/heaven system, even if their status as demigods and having "Guardian Force" concepts like Quetzalcoatl laying around meant any religion was probably just made up of some ancients' fursonas

The "pets suck" meme is such a defeatist take. They sucked the one time they half tried it. It could still be done well, especially with the advancements in pets recently. Nobody is complaining about bahumut/carbuncle these days. Scholars aren't crying about eos. They just needed some optimization. We can still have a good pet class, people just need to get their heads out of their asses.
They sucked for the 8 years they tried them and steadily downplayed them the whole while. Nobody complaining about Bahamut/Carbuncle/Eos is the result of a straight decade of tinkering with pet AI and never reaching a satisfying conclusion with them.

Honestly I don't think I've ever liked pet classes or jobs in any game I've tried. The closest I've come was Maplestory with Mechanic and Wild Hunter, and both of those are "mounted" jobs and not pet jobs as such.
The problem was that the devs never tried to fix them. They just applied bandaids and minimized them so it wouldn't matter in the end anyways. Anytime there was a problem they just removed stuff until it was where we are today, pets are just a visual effect now. It's sad, this dev team is incapable of making any play styles beyond burst DPS. I'm just so frickin tired of burst meta.

Pet classes can be fun when they're done well. I'd even accept something like ShB-era Summoner where the pet was mostly fire and forget and you had skills to command it to do special attacks, but it's otherwise pretty much immune to harm and basically just a fancy DoT you have.

Got it. So there are basically three kinds of RP in this game:
>The Casual Second Life Experience
This is where most FFXIV RP happens. It's all night club venues, modern clothing, Twitch DJs, etc.
>The Final Fantasy RP Experience
People who adhere to the world and setting and actually partake in "realistic" adventuring and plots. Harder to find steady groups for this.
>The Quicksands
This is where all the coomers go, and where much of FFXIV RP really is at- ERP. It's filled to the brim with this stuff. God help you if you also fall into the modbeast rabbit hole.
That's the broader stuff that a new RPer should know. Most people use Mateus for RP, or Balmung. I personally use Zalera and have my own little group I roll with. The world doesn't matter anymore thanks to travel.
Last note is to use the Party Finder to locate RP events. If you have any more questions go ahead and ask. I suggest finding people who want to RP the way you do to get started, though. They'll be able to get you up to pace quickly.
Also, a story skip is good if you want access to the whole world, but obviously you miss context of MSQ. Valuable option for a pure RP experience untainted by the main story which can and WILL ruin your ability to really RP as a character if you don't disregard it entirely.

I would say I fall under this category and many others do as well. I've made wagers on PVP that involved high stakes gil if I win and sexual favors if I lose, things like that. It just depends on who you're interacting with.

Many people do that but I personally hate that format. I prefer one line of dialogue and one line of emotive/flavor/descriptive text between each interaction. The game is happening in real time after all. Slow RP is just so unpleasant. You know when you have a good partner even if they write enough to fill the character limit, though.

Lalafell are all considered children/pedos by most players in the West so it's hard to get by on that race. I just see them as gnomes but what do I know?
Hrothgar are considered gay furries, no exception.
Hyur are milquetoast normie human, though highlanders can be the strong type.
"Mommy" races include Elezen, Roe, Viera, and Highlander. Contrasting with that is female aura and miqote. Midlanders fall in the middle.
Elezen are typically seen as refined. Duskwight get shafted though.
Miqote men are typically subby twinks or gay or both but some of them have cool factor.
Roegadyn are rarely played straight, usually a joke race. But the authentic ones are worth their weight in gil and I'd love more of them.
Male viera are the new groomer race, formerly Male Au Ra.
NONE OF THAT MATTERS. Play what you want and play it straight and ignore all of the above.

why was lahabrea so standoffish with you after he merged back with hephaistos? I can't remember if we did anything to piss him off in the 2nd tier, at that point the sundering hasn't happened yet, nor does he know about the future like venat does.

Body snatching is just an Echo power that the Ascians learned sometime after the sundering. My assumption is that Lahabrea did learn it because of Athena's influence, but they don't really comment on it though it is a pretty major thing considering that pre-sundering Emet-Selch specifically said that dodging death was not possible.

Practice on a striking dummy and have a special hotbar near the center of your screen with big icons that allows you to monitor your big cooldowns.

You know, as far as games go, XIV is pretty good for expanding your vocabulary, mostly due to Koji's autism. An example i like is how one of the Dalmasca raid bosses uses the word demesne, one of my favorites simply because its use is almost so completely unecessary compared to, you know, domain.
I know of demesne from CK2 and didn't know it was pronounced "domain" for years
Dragon's Dogma and Final Fantasy XIV are both great lexical enhancers. And it's fun to embrace it and speak like a theatre character.

I was there and a bunch of people in my FC got gatekept for about a week until people with Ala Mhigan gear got it in trial roulette and stomped him. You still frequently get groups that get wiped by Tidal Wave and just have constant deaths, even with power creep from gear and expansions raising potencies.
CoP pre nerfs was the peak of MMOs, combining an amazing story with massive challenges, both "trial" fights and open world dungeons.

You pick the quest up from the old lady in Mor Dhona who offers you to either turn in an ARR relic or go collect crystals in HW zones.
Go to Eulmore, get a frickload of rings, turn them into gc tickets, buy a gacha minion chest, chance to get a milion plus worth thing to sell and keep.
Or just get them to desynth them and sell the mats for money. I like the feeling of leveling up desynth though it's pretty useless
