Not really, XIV used to do it's own take on familiar FF bosses. Those are the versions from their own games, but that doesn't mean an XIV version of Kefka or Exdeath are completely out. Goldbez and the fiends are honestly kinda wasted and you need a sidequest to get some proper backstory on them. There's a void version of cucchulain from Void Ark and the FF12 from Dalriada version.
I hope we get to see Zalera in XIV some day. One of my favorite summons based on its design alone. It's so fricked up. We got Anima, my other favorite, so I'm hopeful.

the feature of flying isn't something that happens in a vacuum. the fact that the maps are dead as all hell is PRECISELY because flying is already factored into the equation when designing the zones. why bother painstakingly handcrafting map sections when you can just tile a bunch of featureless bumps that no one is going to enjoy or closely examine anyway since they're just going to be a) watching a cutscene b) in a separate instanced duty c) flying over everything anyway? whether flying is optional or not is completely irrelevant to the argument
in arr, the sylph region used to be pretty dangerous. the narrow paths boxed you into field mobs that were actually kind of dangerous especially when you were trying to do beast tribe quests or whatever it is you need to collect from the zone
this sort of map design philosophy can actually be seen more recently in eureka and to a lesser extent bozja (one of the bozja quests require you to go to a spot on the map full of dangerous sound-based aggro undead if you go at night that will oneshot you). the anemos cave, the pagos wind region, the cliffs in pagos and pyros are some examples in eureka. again, because you cannot fly in these zones, the devs are able to craft sections of the map to have certain experiences you can only have while on foot
the devs don't bother doing this for the expansion zones because people are just going to fly over the map anyway

whether or not i choose to fly has no bearing on the fact that the devs don't bother putting effort into the maps because of flight. the damage has already been done before the expansion was even revealed
I like the zones. Thavnair is pretty, Garlemald is pretty savage, I love the atmosphere and detail of the ruins, makes it kind of a unique zone
there's nothing unique about any of the zones. they're virtually identical to every single expansion zone. it's a video game, it's an interactive medium, and the way you interact with the zones has not changed whether fundamentally or in small ways EXCEPT when they do exploratory zones. when garlemald has unique things that you can do or that happens on the map, like how you can interact with special portals in hydatos to gain entry into ba, then that would actually make the zone feel unique

thavnair looks like shit ingame compared to the concept art. ironically the game has more canopy and foilage cover in the shroud - which is an arr zone - than any of the expansion zones. the reason why thavnair looks like a giant, featureless piece of playdough with a few sparse shabby trees scattered here and there is because, like all expansion zones, it's designed for you to simply fly through and not actually explore on foot like all the original arr zones

You just knocked out four shards and a Source capital in one expansion. If that's the pace you're expecting, I guarantee you Meracydia, Nagxia, Ivalice, etc. would also only be a single area, assuming they're not straight up just a dungeon.
Keep the developers on their toes, see what they come up with when they're back in a corner after blasting through 5 expansions worth of locales in one expansion (same as EW did)

The new writer is a Matsuno fanboy like them, but the Japs didn't care about the Ivalice story (because it was shit) and were extremely ambivalent about Bozja (liked some of it, absolutely hated the rest, Matsuno said as much). Their story's over anyway with the collapse of the IVth legion and the higher-ups probably won't allow them to go back to something that received open dislike and got a rushed hackjob ending in notes that basically amounted to 'the bad guys lost'

It sucks since I hate how modern WHM plays (even more braindead since 6.0), and AST has its own obvious design flaws.
Eg. why the frick do I have a 50% RNG on having a healing or a dps card every minute? It ends up meaning the healing card is always a waste because I'm not going to plan my rotation around RNG. Why does Horoscope/Macrocosmos also have a range-check on prematurely ending its effect? Why did Synastry never get a rework to accommodate modern healing flows never using ST GCD heals? Why am I penalized on the regular for Divination if I don't get 3 seals when it's never optimal to waste time trying to redraw during a 2min burst window vs. playing your three cards asap?
