Genuinely one of the best demos I've ever played. Pure kino. Got Goosebumps when the two dominants were epically battling during the cutscene. Also never seen a game do qtes for doors and it was super badass, the PS5's adaptive triggers really shine here. Story is also great, it's refreshing to finally get a grimdark fantasy game with complex characters that have sex and are more than just one dimensional tropes like in GoT.
Gameplay is also pure bliss. It was so sick jumping into dudes and mashing square for a while, never had to use a potion either so wasnt frustrating at all. Flashy, beautiful graphics accentuate all of Clive's moves too and it ran at a solid 4k 60fps the whole time. The Eikon challenge was even better because I had variations of the same move but with different particle effects.

stagger is way too op, bosses just get deleted by titan
they're not. you melt through common mobs instantly and while the bosses take an appropriate amount of time you literally can never get hit so there's no danger of dying
Regular enemies die too fast in the 2nd part of the demo when you have a full moveset, maybe they just gave you a busted sword for that demo cause they mention you have gear and moves that you wouldn't normally have that early but anything that doesn't have a stagger bar dies in half a combo

I'm a firm believer that the reason why so many of the older games feel good is because of nostalgia.
Take Homm 3 for example, amazing game - my friends unironically all prefer 5 and 7 because they didn't grow up with it like me. Same with Baldurs Gate 2, I love rpgs and crpgs in particular but after playing Pathfinder 1 and 2 I've tried getting into BG2 multiple times but it just doesn't hold.

The latter is an mmo, so it might not be your cup of tea. Still, great game anyway, play it everyday.
If you enjoy 16, then 14's probably going to be your cup of tea too. Even though it's an MMO they're both made by the same team and have a lot in common - and they've spent the last two years going back through the entire game and making sure you can play almost the whole thing singleplayer. Just make sure you start in Ul'dah (the other two starting zones are shit) and have patience with the first stretch of the game because it's a rough start (they had to remake the entire game in a single year because the original FF14 was such a fricking disaster they literally blew it up with a meteor in-game).

I dig the story and world of FF. I tried the MMO about 2 years ago (14) and it was a slog fest for me. Got to level 30 and quit. I remember I didn't listen to the story since I was playing with a bud and we were just rushing to end game. There was a lot of mundane go to A B then C then B then C etc quests.
Has that changed in any way? Also is the story good? Comparable to the story of the single player games or does it feel like "MMO" story?
The MMOs are legitimately bad, they have a derranged cult of followers who will shill it because of stockholm syndrome but its legitimately the worst shit ever; like the FF14 shills unironically say shit like "it gets good 300 hours in!", it never gets good.
The story is genuinely good, but it takes a while to hit its stride. As I said, FF14 2.0 was rebuilt in only a year and they had to cut corners writing-wise as a result, but Heavensward is genuine kino and the game's story doesn't dip below "good" after you hit it.
You should try to get invested in the story from the very start however, since the base game sets up a lot of stuff that pays off further down the line - the Crystal Tower alliance raid storyline for example constantly gets call backs. And as I suggested, starting in Ul'dah is the best way to do this since its starting story is the best of the lot.

they have significantly reduced the amount of quests in ARR aswell as put a system that lets you run dungeons with NPCs.
with that said, ARR is the slog part of XIV, very mmo ish and very dull, the game picks up at the end of it during the "Bloody banquet" at the very end of ARR, from this moment on the game gets much, MUCH, better and you also start the Heavensward arc.
truth be told, just speed thru ARR until this banquet scene, and start paying att from there on.
I have tried this game 3 times before sticking with it too, 2 times i got stuck during that 30 or so lvls and quit, the third time i went thru this slog and ended up loving it, what comes after the base game can't even be compared, its a huge leap in quality.

It feels like an MMO story since you have a mute, player created character. You'll be going around helping NPCs with a lot of things. That sort of thing, but that's common in single-player games these days.
But you're description of the gameplay is accurate. You go from A, to B, then C and so forth. And this is all done when you only have a small part of your job's kit. So, the main draw of FFXIV in the early game is the story. Since you didn't pay attention to it, you may still like it if you give it another try. But if you don't like the story, you're not gonna like the experience of playing the game.
At least there's a free trial with the base game and first expansion with no playtime limit. But if you want to register for the free trial, you cannot use your old account if you subscribed with it.

Limsa is far better than Uldah in almost every way. The only reason someone might prefer Uldah is that its characters are important to the story at an earlier time (end of ARR). You even start with Y'shtola rather than Thancred, a trade I'm always willing to make.
If you're staring with FF as a whole
AVOID 15 and 13 as the plague, they are objectively the 2 worst entries in the whole franchise.

1 to 6 had a pixel remaster last year, so you can check any of em, 6 is considered by many as the absolute best.
The original 7-8-9 are on steam, but will require a little modding to fix old pc games stuff, like the OST being MIDI. althou 7 and 9 are regarded as two of the best FF out of all.
10, 10-2 and 12 also got remasters on steam if you want stuff from the PS2 era, Japan considers 10 the best of all, while 12 is in a cult classic position, not bad, but it has it's flaws, it's a very nice game if you like lore and politics, it focus less on the fantasy and more on the war between nations aspect.
11 would be the first mmo, it's an old mmo, everquest style, so prob not a nice thing to try if you don't understand and enjoy that old school hardcore stuff.
13-1-2-3 are the ps3 era entries, as ive said before, very bad.
14 is the 2nd MMO, It's the highest rated FF game since ff12, and hailed by many fans as amongst the top 5(others being 6,7,8 and 10), it still getting updates which make easier for a solo play thru most of the story, meaning you can experience almost all the story without even having to talk to another human being, if you're one of the "anxiety" people who get nervous with human interactions.
as for 15, it's a mess, the story is spread between books, movies, anime and the game itself, it was an aborted attempt of making it a "franchise"
I'd honestly suggest that you start with 14 as it's the most recent, good, and beginner friendly.

i don't see how it's a dumbing down. with hitstun added as a mechanic, it's just another attribute the developer can adjust to incentivize usage of one move over another in a particular situation. this is still in the game - certain moves do way more will gauge damage than others and they're the moves that you would expect to outright flatten enemies in other games (titan windup), but idk i personally would prefer if instead of a gauge being affected it gave a guaranteed down state on normal sized humanoid enemies. i just prefer that.
