It may be a low number, but even among that low number there are games that I would play again because they bring something of their own to the table. I'd be willing to play Bayonetta over DMC, I'd be willing to play God Hand over DMC, I'd even be willing to play Astral Chain over DMC. The only thing FF XVI comes even close to having is being a game like that with more cinematic spectacle than something like DMC, which MGR beats it at anyway. FF XVI does absolutely nothing for me that isn't done better elsewhere and playing it just feels like a reminder of the better games I could be playing instead.

How is it not comparable when talking about action games? Hi-Fi Rush is an action game in the vein of DMC, Bayo or FF XVI, and it's a better one than FF XVI while it's at it.

It definitely doesn't have the depth of DMC, and maybe even not of XVI, but it does have things that make it unique and worth playing in its own right, and it also doesn't have any mechanic as poor as XVI's stagger. They're fair game to compare just on the basis of them both being action games, but of the two, Hi-Fi Rush was a much more enjoyable one to release this year. I don't think either game offers enough to want to put much time into after finishing it, but I would still much sooner go back to Hi-Fi Rush than I would ever touch XVI again, because XVI offers me nothing that DMC doesn't do better. Hi-Fi Rush at least offers me something different.

You definitely can do crazy stuff in FF XVI, but it neither encourages you to do it as well as in DMC, seeing as you're not ranked unless you replay and you're also encouraged to just get the max amount of hits in on stagger which encourages you to just play in a way of efficiently getting down stagger and then having a rotation that does optimum damage during stagger, and the options available to you are still limited compared to DMC. It still has the makings of a good combat system I think, the most fun I had with the game was just in the training mode, but it's similar enough to DMC while also being hampered by things that DMC isn't that it ends up just leaving me wondering why I would bother with it when I have DMC5 right there.

I would have loved if it differentiated itself from DMC more while keeping some of the things it already had that work in DMC, but it settled for being worse DMC, and it did nothing that made it worthwhile when it comes to the RPG side of the game either, it feels generous to even say there was an RPG side to the game.
Hi-fi rush was also good and unique. But colour coded enemies is the ultimate action game sin and therefore I didn’t have the drive to play again.

FFXVI's reputations and XV's are two entirely different things. Personally, I didn't even play XV so anything about its quality didn't factor into my time with XVI at all, but XVI just sucked.

Stranger of Paradise was absolutely better. My main interest in the game came from it having DMC's combat designer, and the combat was what I enjoyed most about it, but compared to other action games, it leaves a lot to be desired between the awful stagger system, cooldown skills and Clive's base moveset being fairly limited. Every RPG part of the game feels superfluous and tacked on, but before playing it I was hoping it would combine FF's RPG history with an action game system to make a combat system that stands out from something like DMC by taking some turn-based RPG design like buffs and elemental skills and incorporating it into an action game, instead I just got a much worse DMC5 that I now would never return to when I could just play DMC5 instead.
That's how I feel about what I consider the best part of the game, and aside from that it just has abysmal sidequests, a mediocre story and a world that's uninteresting and unsatisfying to explore. There are some things it does well like having some good music, a few good characters and a good spectacle in some of the big boss fights, despite how mechanically uninteresting they usually are, but I was not impressed with the game at all and I neither felt like it had an obligation to be turn-based or have a lack of interest in action games.

I didn't expect it to be equal to DMC either, but I thought it would be fine because I thought it would do something different. It didn't have to do what I mentioned with trying to put RPG mechanics into an action game, though I would have liked that, but I did want to at least bring something of its own to the table, whatever that may be, but in so many aspects they just made a lesser DMC, and what aspects they add that don't translate to something in DMC, the stagger system being the big one, it's just a bad system. I prefer DMC to Bayonetta personally, but I would still play Bayonetta over DMC at times because Bayonetta is a distinct character from Dante, Nero and Vergil, she has her own interesting mechanics and so does the game she's in.
Clive just feels like Nero-lite, the most interesting thing about him is that I like some of the Eikionic Skills, but even those are dragged down by being tied to cooldowns. I can accept XVI not having combat as fun or in-depth as DMC5's, but I have a harder time accepting XVI as just DMC5 but worse, which is how it often felt to me.

It's been executed well in the past. XVI's stagger system is just bad.

When staggered, enemies just take more damage based on the chain gauge. They can still attack you unless you launch them, which requires you to continue actively attacking them. Not only that, but there were specific techniques that did more damage to enemies just as they were about to recover from stagger, and there were ways to keep the stagger period going for longer as well. It rewarded skillful play with better DPS, which led to faster kills and better loot.

Enemies can't act when staggered, but the stagger period is relatively brief, usually just long enough for the player to use one slow, hard-hitting technique before the enemy gets back up and returns the fight to a more neutral state. It's a moment of advantage that the player is meant to capitalize on while also giving them a quick breather, since enemies in LR and VIIR tend to be fairly aggressive and put a lot of pressure on the player.

Not giving a shit about stagger made the combat more fun, but it just made it painfully clear that the system doesn't serve much of a purpose in the game's design. It seems to only be there because A.) it was in previous FFs and B.) the game is designed to appeal to casual players as much as possible by making 30% of each fight just wailing on an enemy that can't fight back.
I can understand and agree with most of your complaints. I think they held back a bit too much cause of casual players who aren’t used to the type of games suzuki worked on before. I can’t say I agree with the missing rpg elements being a bad thing because I’m personally really tired of rpg mechanics getting thrown into every game at the cost of combat flow. It was nice to see a game chop away almost all of its rpg mechanics to become a full on action game for once instead of the opposite. Should it have been FF? That depends on the person I guess. I’m hoping they dial it back and give Clive a larger base kit and their original plan of at least giving him 4 eikon slots instead of 3. My personal issues with the game is how for a game with a pretty fun combat system, you can’t fight hunts more than once a playthrough, arcade scoring is fricked, and boss fight cutscenes are the only ones that can’t be skipped for some reason, making them super tedious to do.

I agree with that and I think it's a bit of an issue the game has already, I wouldn't consider the gear and levelling to be obnoxiously in the way, but it does feel almost entirely superfluous. When I mentioned taking over RPG mechanics and putting them in the game, I more meant just taking translating RPG mechanics into an action game to make something unique. Buffs for example are something you see mainly in RPGs, but there's no reason you can't have a buff/debuff system in an action game. Being able to apply Haste or something to Clive and have his attack speed go up feels like it could have been the kind of thing that would make the game stand out among other games in the genre, I don't think having it tied to a bunch of menus, skill trees or other RPG mechanics like that would be appropriate, but I think there was potential to try to incorporate past FF mechanics into a new system to make something that stands out more.
Haste would be interesting in this kind of combat. If it were relegated to buffs/debuffs without needing to pause the game, it would likely work out. There’s still a lot they could have done, but I think the foundation is solid, and that’s why I hope they make another game, mainline or spin-off. I wanna see how the devs iron out the wrinkles while maintaining the same system. The FF7 remakes have that opportunity and I think that’s why people are hyped for rebirth.

I haven't played the game nor any other FF since 13 and i hate MMOs, i simply like from what i have seen in 16 and i don't mind people having things to dislike about the game but almost every criticism here is insanely moronic or obvious troll tier.
The game is long but for me I wanted a long game and always loved the cgi cutscenes in the PS1 era FF games and this reminded me of them as they are the spectacle on show. I remember picking up FFIX for the ps1 and on the back of the box one of the main selling points was "over 1 hour of CGI rendered cutscenes". You'll get more than 1 hour in this game though, although people have added in the normal dialogue between characters as cutscenes for some reason, they're not.
Anyway, it's good but long so if you're ok with that then it's definitely worth a playthrough.
Well the reason i haven't played it yet is because i don't own console since PS3 and just moved on to PC, so right now just waiting for the port.
No worries, I heard the two extra dlc stories will be out around the time for the PC or bundled with the PC port so you'll get the best version of the game. That said as it is, it is a complete story and didn't need dlc which was so overlooked, I'm guessing it's about some characters backstory
