This honestly the only interesting curse is XL
all other curses are just "fuck you we are removing an important game mechanic for this floor"

Curses are a neat idea but they should be either lessened in amount, have a duration or something, or have a penalty trigger in response to accidentally doing something you would want to avoid (ideally something that's not everywhere). A curse of slowness that lowers your speed stat by 1/2th for the floor would be neat.

worst offenders either force you to throw your corpse at the wall to grind shit so you can move onto the next grind or just force you to double/triple/quadruple down on whatever is carrying your run, or they're just undertuned to account for the randomness.
there's no or very little wacky synergies or opportunities to save the run through knowledge checks which is isaac's best features

Spelunky 2 is my absolute favorite but I also like Nuclear Throne a lot. I have 240 hours in Isaac and consider those games to be much better.

It's definitely not. Spelunky is way too easy, repetitive, and exploitable, 2 addresses all of its issues, but as a result it is absurdly hard so I would recommend 1 first.

there's a lot less truly "random" levels in 2, shit like the quillback and humphead levels. and there's ton of skips that people found that let's you bypass annoying stuff like the qilin.

Pack explosions literally just meant arbitrarily making Vlad's Cape the best mobility item in the game (Additionally among the more dense stage design making jetpacks superfluous).
An item which you have guaranteed access to in the second area of the game.
Vlad's cape is not better than the jetpack for endgame (CO) and it's only guaranteed by taking the route through the area flooded with fire and lava first. See how this works?
