Devs already did that years ago, it was called League of Legends. Updating games like League of Legends or Dota or Minecraft is like updating chess, any change you make affects every other facet of every other fricking thing. If you frick up an update you can kill the game and waste millions of dollars. At the very least with skins it's guaranteed money.

This is not a games industry exclusive problem. I really don't mean to sound like a leftist but this is what happens when companies need to make sure profits keep going up, benefits are expensive so it's cheaper to keep employees in a contract position.

I think another interesting point is that GAAS was pushed as a way to keep devs and other people involved in the game industry at work. Rather than layoffs or what not between game cycles causing job precarity.
And it's now resulting in... the exact opposite lmao. Due to constant work available it's cheaper to just keep a list of free lance artists. And more beneficial due to a more robust supply of art styles.
But trickle down economy works, give the businesses more power, eventually people will see the money!
