Conquest was my favorite gameplay Emblem until Engage, did both hard and lunatic run on Conquest and just completed hard on Engage a few days ago.

I dont know much about smt, but im guessing it had interesting story and/or characters? Theres nothing really to discuss in engage, sure you can theorycraft how you can make panette the most broken shit ever, but that gets forgotten after a week. 3H was very fun and different (I enjoyed the extreme flexibility for building units, how easy it was to raise weapon ranks, and I really liked Gambits + refining Combat Arts), but I prefer Engage

Its an ok game, but honestly a bit exhausting, every chapter has endless reinforcement, so you either break the game with something like micaiah and warp/rescue/entrap or you turtle for 20+ turns.

I used Alear for the entire game and no one else. Equipped him with Tiki Bracelet, Edelgard's +5 Str/Dex and +10 HP/Lck and he's golden.

Indeed. The game's skirmishes (if you choose to engage in them) punish you hard if you're trying to grind-err, sorry "train" a unit up to your force's standards. Maybe on normal they're reasonable but on Hard they're filled with a shit ton of fliers and cavalry that gangbang you ASAP. Unless you have your ring I WIN buttons you're basically fookt.
Ive found that people dont realize Miciah is the best way to level that one unit that falls behind. Other than that there are the trials in Somniel which no one bothers with. Cant die there, and you get exp at the end plus upgrade mats for your emblem weapons. You can also set level difficulty I think.
Pretty sure the devs just wanted to balance griding for money, mats, and levels. Like you do skirms strategically throughout your run and you gotta earn the wins. People also dont seem to know training skirms wont get you killed and let you lose and retry while also keeping exp. Bonus exp at the end too.

I'm at chapter 17 on hard and the game has so few enemies that maps tend to be over relatively quickly. Is that a maddening thing cause I don't see many reinforcements?
Ch16 has like 4 waves of reinforcements + almost the entire map minus the 2 bosses sprint at you by like turn 3 or 4
Chapter 16 was a nice change of pace so far, but even then thanks to the tides and the size of the map, it wasn't a constant stream of enemies. But compared to other FEs it didn't feel that overwhelming.
Try skirmishes, that's where the actual challenge is, not the story missions.

I don't remember FE7 having that problem but yeah it absolutely feels like Radiant Dawn, and I disliked that game's gameplay too. It's probably more accurate to compare it to RD than Rev because Rev feels like it wasn't playtested.

Bartre, Dorcas, and Dart are mogged by Hawkeye.
Those three get mogged even harder if you take the Geitz route.

Athos is only available for one chapter but will still be better than Canas.

You haven't played Rev if you're saying this. NOTHING comes close to how bad the unit balance was in that game. Odin comes in at chapter SEVENTEEN at level TWELVE, and that's just one example.

Considering what Engage's two immediate predecessors are like in this regard, I doubt this heavily.
Thinking about it this way, it's definitely an improvement over 3H, but I'd still say it's in the top 5 worst map designs on average. The paralogues are basically old maps brought back, some ended up being good, but the original maps drag the game down by a lot

If you want an actual reason it is because there is nothing to talk about unless you are a gameplay autist. It is the same problem FG have but worse here because there really isn’t a developing meta or constant changes. With how the internet works in about a week the game will be solved until the next broken dlc drops.
The most you would theoretically have is dumb builds or gimmick playthroughs but Engage actively discourages grinding and has no NG+ which make these more annoying than hard.

the story is serviceable. it's fine it wasn't a focus. they're going to do fe4r next! storygays are getting what they want in like a year and a half. it's good that engage separated the new fanbase created from 3h's wheat from the chaff. those who were never in for the gameplay simply wouldn't enjoy the rest of the series where the story and characterization is rather generic - best to give them a very high production quality version of that and see if they recoil or sit down to eat. a bunch of whiners. go play a VN.

Break incentivizes you to use different weapons even more than ever before.
I hope it returns, but is nerfed a bit, so you dont lose your attack, but you do less damage because you're staggered

Just give her Lyn and make her a warrior. Her str growth is the 2nd best in the game, and Lyn + warrior takes care of any speed issues which is her only flaw.

You do the same thing you do in every fire emblem game, if anything its more balanced than the previous games since bonds are harder to get, there are no pair-up mechanics nor arts, enemies almost always have a perfectly balanced weapon triangle, break/smash means the offensive always has the advantage which in turn means turtling is worse and most maps have villages and chests to reward you for not turtling.
The only clutch mechanic is the rings and even then only Ike, Sigurd and Lyn are good, the others are very situational

They represent the class type and serve as some sort of visual aid to better distinguish them when the unit is Engaged. The propeller represent Cavaliers, wings for Fliers (and Dragons), visor for Coverts, shields for Armor, weapons for Backup and magical disks for Mystical. Don't know what Qui Adepts get.
Not quite sure what you mean but when characters engage they get an effect behind them reflecting their class type since it can influence emblem skills.
Cavs get propellers, armors get glowy shields, magic users get some circle effects, etc.

Gunter sure, everyone else can be used decently enough if you're not braindead however. Even a meme man like Arthur can be good if you give him some goddess icons so he doesn't get crit by everything.
Arthur is an extreme berserker or a balanced hero. He can also work as a cav. Because of pair up movement isn’t an issue for Effie and she has moron strength allowing her to one shot enemies. Good personal speed growth as well so you can get her out of knight to make use of it. Odin can do meme nosferatu strats or go swordmaster. He gets natural access to life and death as well. Nyx is a stronger mage than Odin and just works as a glass cannon. Selena is your only first generation pegasus knight without ditching Azura’s dancing, giver her a forged weapon and she’s good. Beruka is discount Camilla, one Camilla is great so two is even better. She has more defense as well and flight, or you can make her an accurate berserker due to her high skill. Laslow can become a great rallybot due to his personal and his stats aren’t even that bad. Gunter gets a lot of good classes to reclass into and an amazing personal no one else can replicate. Izana is a late game staffbot.

As a fun side note, the game throws you a bunch of past lords as emblems and then you get two lords per country and of course your special snowflake OC. Might be the same amount of lords in this game as there are pleb characters.
For me the whole anniversary thing is what makes it so boring and I have been a big fan since Sacred Stones. If this was a one time thing then sure but Awakening basically tried to get everything in there while doing it’s own thing and Heroes still exists. Engage is just there for me and I feel that a lot of that is because it tried to be as vanilla as possible because it’s an anniversary game. It is a fun game to play but unless it gets NG+ I have no interest in playing it again.

Hell, there were three different time manipulators active during that chapter if you count the Byleth Emblem Ring. That chapter having a few wobbly moments in the story is actually consistent.

And I'd add that's why in Echoes Alm is always in the right, and Celica is portrayed as some naive b***h doesn't know what she's talking about, and most major decision in the story is a mistake that makes things more difficult for Alm.
Any other games that represent them (e.g. Awakening and Heroes) where Alm isn't the main character, make Alm out to be a hothead battle maniac and portray it like Celica is needed to restrain him and they balance each others flaws. If you play Echoes Alm has no flaws and running into every battle is portrayed as the right decision, because in that game he's the player insert and they're afraid of him having a flaw.

You put that there like Anna ever has a different character whenever she shows up. She's literally always a israelite.
There's some characters I like, but the story barely gives you anything to satisfy you. The supports are almost all really shallow or samey (usually with one relevant thing at A support and the rest is boring crap), and the main plot has everyone being irrelevant outside of the four royalty that appear on the opening. And even then, these four only exist to get shocked or describe what is happening (outside of their own little arcs where their parents die or whatever). You would think Hortensia or Arclyst would be relevant since they are royalty who get a lot of screen time, but after their arc is over, they disappear completely.
I liked Yunaka, who is a canonical ring holder and has a whole chapter for her introduction, but she stops existing in the story after her chapter (not even reacting to losing or retrieving Micaiah's ring). For the most part her supports don't really add much to her character (besides all of them repeating the same schtick of her not wanting to talk about her past), until you do specifically her S support where she spoon feeds you her past. And she arguably has a lot more depth than 90% of other characters.
I don't even think the characters in Engage are that bad, but the game honestly does a disservice for their own characters.
The characters feel more shallow because there is zero worldbuilding. What made 3H more complex is that there was a lot of lore and worldbuilding to Fodlan so even gimmickshitters could reference lore as an explanation for how society made them so annoying. In Engage you have the same gimmickshitters but with no backing behind them so every conversation becomes "uhhh do you like tea" or something equivalent to that.
This comes through most blatantly in Diamant and Citrinne's supports. It's ALMOST a 3H support, talking about nobility and power structures and shit. But since there's no actual worldbuilding in Brodia we don't have any idea who these nobles are, why they do what they do, how they work, what makes their territory unique or even where they are because there is no worldbuilding in the game. Thus it just gets left ambiguously as "the nobles" and it ends at that and seems shallow as a result. Meanwhile in 3H which has stronger worldbuilding they'd say something like "it's a dispute between house blongo and house zongo over the taxes imposed on them after the war of scrimblington" which makes it seem more interesting because that information then ties into lore and your perspectives of the other characters and regions.
Genealogy of the Holy War does the same thing. The characters are paper thing but they each represent their own area which does have interesting lore and backstory so it ends up filling any gaps.
3H was an actual, ambitious story game with 4 routes. And a fujo char designer. Gameplay wasn't the focus, there is so much downtime in the monastery to throw worldbuilding at you. Its the highest estrogen game in the series and thus understandably still talked about to this day
Meanwhile high testosterone FE games focus on the gameplay and fricking your sisters

A lot of characters have inherent proficiencies.
Ones that are blue mean they even gain +1 to that weapon rank when put in any class that can use the weapon.

I mean that's fair, Ch 11 Engage was peak gimmick. I just especially hate the stat lowering enemies/ninjas because it makes your napkin math too damn hard
Im not saying this because I used any, but I'm pretty sure thats what punching is for. Theres intended to be a counter to everything even if you don't want to acknowledge it, just as I don't. I'm stuck in my old FE ways of forming walls and then doing a massive counter on the PP.

Conquest had awesome changes from difficulty to difficulty, too. Stuff like Normal mode golems cannot move but in Hard mode they can. I love when games make hard mode or whatever harder by actually making the mechanics more challenging rather than just buffing the stats.
I enjoyed conquest on my first playthrough, but I fricking lothed it my second, because typically a good part of the replay value for me is to vary up my army, and I feel conquest actively punishes you for that kind of experimentation unless you want to use the Fates kids, which are actively the worst set of characters I can think of in a video game

What's the best chapter in Engage? I'm up to 18 and so far 17 and 11 have been the best.
17 is the best because it's a 6v6 with all the rings. That should have been the point where the Hounds all got killed off because they're just filler after that point and it could never be topped as a showdown.
Chapter 11 is so overhyped though. If you've ever played Thracia you've played 15 maps with that exact tone and frantic objective except you have no resets and have to evacuate every unit rather than just Alear.
None of Thracia's escapes have that much bullshit to deal with, while your own is minimized. They're pretty straightforward.

You have every emblem infinitely respawning on random enemies, the Micaiah-user having higher range with an AoE Freeze staff in the middle of an escape map, Sigurd unit with like 15 move, etc.
You don't have to deal with anything like that in an escape map for Thracia without you also having warp/rescue/sleep/berserk/silence all with infinite range.

Once you kill them all they stop spawning until you pass the reinforcement line

And it's not like the Sigurd corrupted threatens anyone other than Vander
A Great Knight Louis only get tickled by the ridersbane on maddening
The rings are redistributed the turn after you kill them though, it's a lot of strong enemies to fight with less tools than you've had the whole game. And you need to be in range to use Obstruct, with a natural staff user, while enemies are coming from the north. Likely puts them in Freeze range too, and they're not a thief/sniper with covert, so they're not just going to no-show most enemies.
It has a lot of mechanics going on in that map that are less obvious to cheese than Thracia maps.
The rings are only redistributed if there are corrupted still alive that don't have rings
You can kill almost every enemy before crossing the reinforcement line, and then 4 of the rings are given to the hounds
Jean can use staves at base, and if you're promoting early you can have a sage before chapter 8

Galzus in C6
Fog of war pegasus knight and warping dark mage spam in 14x
Cavalry brigades and endless reinforcements as you have to have half your army escape in 19
Engage Chapter 11 doesn't come close to any of these. The only way I can see people getting stressed out is if they've literally never played an Escape map before. There are some easier ones than it in Thracia but you have to get through a bunch that are much harder AND you have to evacuate every unit rather than just Leif/Alear.
How slow do you even have to be going for the Hounds to be an issue? Do they appear earlier on Maddening?
Galzus comes incredibly late in C6, you have to be fricking around for him to be an issue.
14x is mostly an inconvenience because you're escorting NPCs, but warping dark mage are using rewarp on themselves which eats their turn. If they're in position to be a threat, you'll likely see them using a torch and have a turn to kill them before they can take a real action. Pegasus Knights aren't that big a threat either, the main concern is them going after villagers but even that just loses you some rewards. They might even capture instead of killing.
And 19 is an absolute joke with Rewarp/Warp/Rescue, and just outpacing movement in general. You just rescue the NPCs, get rescue'd, and have some of your cavs/fliers stay down there to grab villages as they leisurely stroll to the castle.

Damn that's disappointing to hear the late game chapters don't hit those heights. I figured it'd have its load blown by then
11 works so well cause you have had a lot of strength up until then. They even take your rewind away which most players just won't have been expecting.

The ring system really ruins this game for me. It turns some enemies and bosses either into complete jokes or absolute overpowered damage sponges and turns skill management into a complete chore. It is tedious as frick.
It's actually a good game with great graphics. The only real issue is the story.

1. Thief is an upgraded class. You get one thief early, and 2nd thief (after chapter 11) is level 17. Was this done on purpose? I only need 3 levels on Zelkov (and 2 on Yunaka, I grinded her via that emblem who had Greater Sacrifice) to use Second Seal.
2. I just unlocked skirmushes, but battles are too hard. All enemies are level 18. Do these become harder as I go, or is the point of this to leave it now and try later?

You know, I finished ch 11 yesterday and saw a skirmish on that map with big bridge. Tried, was destroyed. Today, that skirmish is not available, but there is another one in other location.

For the skirmish, I saved it for later. I think that one is mandatory to spawn in for the tutorial, any others that show up are very rare (only seen one other, and I'm up to Ch20 in maddening).

While it's a step above Fateslandia, Elyos doesn't have any strong merits as a setting compared to Fodlan. The fact that characters need to borrow power from previous protagonists via the Rangz gimmick is the final nail in the coffin.
