If you find the game aimless it's because you are utterly aimless, it's that simple.
The game wants me to spend 45 minutes building a fragile fan car that despawns instead of just riding my horse over there. That is not creativity, that is wasting my time and padding the game.
This, I enjoy ToTK but cared not for the forced car building bullshit everybody praised, I don't care if you think it's a technical marvel because it "just works" it's a poorly implemented time sink. When the game was out people would just tell you to duplicate the resources and parts to save time, like that was a good thing. BoTW was unironically a better game.
I dunno. I played BotW recently and it feels very bare bones compared to TotK. Maybe BotW is a more "pure" example of the concept.
But I just the wealth of content in TotK much better. The combat works better, sidequests are better, the exploration and discovery is better, the rewards are better and the main questlines are easily the best in the series.
The main quest is worse than in BOTW And most of the "temples" fricking suck. The final cavern is also a massive downgrade compared with Hyrule's Castle from BOTW. The combat relies on crafting weapons and using endless menus for arrows and such.
