It's not beaten until you beat lvl 255
but the game resets at 255 back to level 0. It doesn't crash or end if you can make it there, and then it just goes all over again. The game literally doesn't end unless you lose or if the game crashes.

if you loop back around you haven't beaten the game. the game cannot be beaten in the true sense. it has no end.
this makes crashing the game the closest thing to beating it there ever will be. the race to do even better doesn't stop of course. people are going to chase the rebirth and then they're just going to keep chasing ever higher numbers. eventually second rebirth and so on. although play-time will become a limiting factor. a rebirth would take about an hour, right? several rebirths would be several hours and generally games that take more than 2-3 hours to run aren't popular. I don't think there will be a big scene making attempts at more than the single rebirth.

Drop the L-block to slide in, breaking a line, then the S-block in centre, L-block left, line in that last remaining hole, and then that little lip blocking off the hole is completely cleared to put your other line in holding through to clear three of the four bottom rows.

The accomplishment is this. NES tetris, like most versions of tetris, is a game with no win condition. You play it until you lose. There is a situation in level 153 of the game where you need to clear one line exactly or else you lose, and if I'm not mistaken, this is the first spot in the game where it can crash because it's trying to do things it was never programmed to do.
I believe this is the point that people are trying to get to for some reason, and that's what this kid did? Someone else can explain it better. But like I said tetris has no win condition, and since it uses 8 bit integers, the game will actually reset to level 1 once you beat level 256, and you can theoretically keep playing it over and over infinitely. This is to say, the kid didn't "beat" this version of tetris because its literally impossible, but he got further than any human would ever realistically be able to get to.

as dumb as it sounds, that's really all that matters. back in the 80s anybody could have said they got so and so score with no proof, and magazines would print it. the famous example is todd rodgers who got a high score on atari drag racing. They printed it and just left it there. Two whole decades later, someone got the source code for the game and proved that his score was literally impossible. It doesn't matter if anyone got the high score or not, because nobody even believed it was humanly possible until recently, and now there's proof.

it's NES tetris. for most players, level 29 is as far as any good player will ever get, because at that point it becomes nearly impossible to move the blocks from one side to the other before it hits the bottom. Some autists found a new way to hold the controller to make it possible to do this.
