I think there is too much focus on purely catching? Not so much traveling, growing your team or other milestones. Catch lots and LOTS of Pokémon for research. Pokémon Go influence can felt strongly.

I quit pokemon mainline games during Black and White.
And I just recently came back to the games and I really enjoyed PLA.
The open world aspect is much more enjoyable than being locked into a few paths.
That said, I miss all the hidden puzzles that early pokemon games had and PLA is missing.
Still revived my love for the franchise after SWSH dropped the ball so hard
