In a world where we need a solid classic simcade they've gone this route. They are obviously making Hellblade to compete with Sony and appear to be giving Fable the God of War treatment and rebooting it into a Sony style cinematic game. Weirdly enough my friend group is the only set of Xbox players (or were, they've all moved on now) I know in the UK, so ended up getting one too when I was sick of Sony. Now they're clearly following an identical path

What are you on about? The game is great and is far less grindy than some of the previous ones. It doesn't quite reach the heights of something like 4 though. And the GT games always sell well.

This allowed Steam to establish essentially a monopoly that even put Games for Window Live in an early coffin the better part of a decade ago now. Well, the Insomniac slides showed that game sales for FW flatlined after it was included in PS+. Probably not all that different for MS except it's flatlined from the very start. Apparently no one is even buying third party games because Xbox shitters expect to see them on Goypass. That's why MS is only reporting on "engagement" these days. 12 million players? How many played for 5min and then dropped it? How many active subscribers? No one knows.
Bethesda also had 10m+ in sales projections for Starfield on PS alone. So that revenue is gone. Add to that an anticipated title becoming a lackluster flop (Halo, Starfield, Redfall, Forza) and suddenly you got bit of a problem going on. Streaming is already far less profitable than the traditional business (as seen with music and movies) but when you're spending hundreds of millions (500mil+ in the case of Halo) it becomes unsustainable. Except when you're a trillion $ company I guess.
Just like with Windows and Office, Microsoft is terrible at selling you an end product. They want to sell you a service with a recurring revenue stream.

I played it on gamepass and I'm a big racing game/forza fan. Not sure if that works out for MS though because its not like I stay subscribed to gamepass, I only subscribe when there is something I want to play and I got to get about 100 hours of Forza in for $10.

Gamepass is a doubled edged sword for them. Sure, everyone will have gamepass, but all those people will absolutely not buy a full price release knowing that they have a constantly growing backlog of hundreds of games (sure, only a handful of them are worth playing, but still)
