Foul Language Detection

>Secret of Evermore

>If the player or dog their name have foul language in them like "frick" or "ass", the boatman will charge the player 3 amulets. This is the only known instance in the game where foul language is checked. A name like "Cassie" will also be regarded as such, since it has "ass" in its name

its not even the most uncommon thing in the game to stumble upon either. kids prolly named jarpig characters "assfrick" or "gaymuffin" or whatever tf all the time back then
iirc theres a secret shop you can find outside that one town with the bazaar minigame where you have to get sucked around a patch of quicksand by a tornado like 200 times or something insane. idk how anyone found that. id assume it was in nintendo power

I hadn't heard about this. Do you have a link to somewhere talking about it? I couldn't see anything but wasn't sure what to search for

just look for an old online walkthrough. itll undoubtedly mention it
its the part right before that timed trading sequence minigame. iirc it gives you a ton of gold so you can buy all the OP items without having to worry about bartering super efficiently

If you type "frick" into picrel's high score screen it changes it to something else. I can't remember what, I can't find it online, and I can't be bothered to check myself. Also, nothin nasty now

I found out about the foul language thing because I was looking up how to find the alchemist guy in the desert of doom. He usually gives you the Sting magic. But I was playing a randomized version of the game using this
    https://evermizer.com
and I already got Sting from somewhere else and thought that alchemist guy might have something else I needed so I should try to find him. The randomized game works pretty well though, i haven't had any problems so far. Only thing was I couldn't trigger the fight against Vigor in Nobilia without first going to the area outside Blimp's cave in Crustacia, just before the desert of doom, and falling down the northern pit just outside his cave, which then triggers the cutscene where you control the dog in the Nobilia fountains area for a short while

Uniracers won't let you name your unicycles any swear words...It will just say "Not Cool Enough" when you try to enter them. There's a bunch of innocuous words the game won't let you use either. "Sonic" and "Sega" are banned too which is pretty funny.

I don't think games changing profane high score names is anything too rare, but I remember for some reason if you did it in MK4 it would change your name but also play a voice clip of Shao Khan saying "SHWAAA" or something.

Spider-Man for PS1. Try to put a cussword in the password screen and Spidey punches it to turn the word into something cute like "FLOWER" or "CUDDLES". Also works for Enter Electro.

No, you wouldn't get banned for saying a slur in an offline game. If it had happened you'd be able to find at least one example.

In Dragon Warrior 7, you get cursed by the Goddess of Naming or whatever if you rename your character a curse word - it gets stuck like that, and you have to pay a hefty fee (for the early game at least) to undo it.

Don't some earlier DQ also do similar things? As well as not allowing people to name their characters "AAAA" and "BBBB"?

Since when? Because "manco" has always been fine, in fact the spanish translation of the Silmarillion localizes "Beren One-Hand" as "Beren el manco".

MechWarrior 2 will chide you for using freebirth vulgarity if you enter frick or shit as cheat codes, but other than that it doesn't really do anything.

SimCity 2000 (I think only the DOS version) will call you out for typing damn, darn, or heck, then spam a bunch of churches in your residential zones.

The IIGS H2G2 game tells you that it's "family entertainment, not video nasty" if you tell the game to do anything rude. Like telling Arthur to frick the passing microscopic space fleet the dog with the cheese sandwich ignored. Or telling him to frick the dog. Or the sandwich, for that matter. Weirdly, when it comes to telling him to shove a dick-shaped object into one of his orifices, that's perfectly fine, but mostly because you wouldn't be able to understand the intercom otherwise.

In "La aventura original" (a Spanish adventure Spectrum game), if you write insults, the game will warn you to stop, and if you write them again, you get the game over screen.
In "Cozumel" (another Spanish adventure), if you write insults, the game will insult you back.
