I think it has more to do with 5 much like 3 and 2 not being very prevalent in the west until more recently, while there was releases here 5 was bundled with another much more popular game, 2 and 3 were first released as a weird semi-remakes iirc. Now days you can play a dozen versions of all of them which are very different in terms of quality but everyone with a phone or computer made in the last 20 years can run an emulator and play the originals.
Personally I find the GBA ports of all except 1 to be the best

Always glad to see 5 here. 4 hasn't aged very well, but 6 is still good, 5 is better than both though.

I absolutely don't remember anyone ever rating 5 that low, there's never, ever been a reason to rate it lower than 3, and the only reason to rate 1 higher is pure nostalgia.

If anything the old threads used to shit on 4 the most, because the story's so lame and cheesey that as the rest of the series told better and better stories, 4 just looked increasingly ridiculous. 5 is perfectly fine because it's a simple story, with nice emotional moments and it's held up by pure gameplay, but going from 6, 7, or X and then playing 4, it's almost painful.

FFV wasn't great, especially not compared to 4 or 6. I know you're playing into 4chin's, popular bad, but FFV really isn't that good. And if it's strictly gameplay we are talking about then even FF3 was better than 5 too.

There's literally nothing wrong with the pixel remaster moron.

5 is so much better than 3, both in story and gameplay that it makes 3 obsolete.

The only reason to ever play 3 these days is if you're curious about the Crystal Tower from FF14. In every other respect, 5 is a straight upgrade in ways that most FF games just don't do. Like you can prefer 7 to 6, or prefer X to 7 or such, but that's all personal taste for the story and systems, you can't really lead directly from one to the other. 3 -> 5 is a straight, direct evolution and it leaves 3 feeling entirely pointless.

It's unreal to me how hard people fellate games with job systems around here. You frickers even try to tell people X-2 is good. There are far better character customization systems in so many JRPGs even within FF that do essentially the same things, just without being able to play dress-up. Also, job system aside, everything else about FF5 ranges from average, like the music, to pure nonsense, like the story.

      Anonymous

Job systems are fun when done correctly, as in FFV and FFX-2, because it enables a variety of approaches to the game.
Now, no one will ever say that FFV or FFX-2 are challenging, because any challenge there is to be had must come from your own choices since any party combo is viable.
Games that try and fail to replicate the formula like Cuckstal Project don't understand that the whole point was never to make the game a puzzle where there are objective right and wrong choices. The joy of these systems is not unlike a paint by number. You can pick any colors you want and still have a good time.

        Anonymous

        >Now, no one will ever say that FFV or FFX-2 are challenging
FFV is easier than 3 and 2.
        It's harder than 1 and 4
And it's harder than 6 or anything afterwards.

There's a good handful of bosses and even random encounters in 5 that'll sit you on your ass unless you properly handle them, or figure out an overpowered strategy. Hell, one of the most common commentaries about it is that 5 gives you so much power through the Job System, but it expects you to use that power, so the bosses and enemies are much more difficult than most FF games.

1.) FFX-2 was good, insofar as the combat is concerned. It was addicting but simple, and aside from cooming to it repeatedly as a 14 year old boy the battle system and occasional song are the only things I remember fondly of the game.
2.) Better games with better job systems, yes. Better at the time? Definitely not. It was released three years before even DQ VI. This was pretty much the best of the best at the time, and it's still pretty good.

Finally, I liked V's story quite a bit. It wasn't as dramatic or grandiose as IV, but it has a charm to it with its lighter, more comedic plot. I'll give you the OST though, I honestly only remember the main theme and Gilgamesh's battle off the top of my head.

5 is one of my favorites but when I came to play it back the story was incredibly generic with the most overdone cliche tropes ever:
    >Amnesia
    >two people that are vaguely familiar with each other have the same pendent
    >Missing family relative lost due to an accident
    >Betrayed by king , which in turn was mind controlled
    >Exdeath being the most generic bad guy i've ever seen in final fantasy
    >Exdeath unironically says "MuHAHAHA"
    >Main character is actually the son of the previous crystal protector , who of which mysteriously gets sick and dies because.....uh...
    >Old man dies
    >Party turns into a harem now
    >Exdeath wants to control the void because....uh....MUHAHAHA I AM GROOT
    >Villain is unable to control the power and becomes eviler
I remember this plot sounding way cooler when I was a teen playing this game , this plot just sounded like they wanted to make a generic 90's shonen manga with all the complexity of a saturday morning cartoon

It has no reason and cannot be removed in any way, not with objects, nor by changing job and/or equip.

nobody is saying FFV isn't a total cliché storm, it's mostly played for its systems. I've also come to appreciate Exdeath as a villain BECAUSE he's just an unrepentant evil tree man who actually tries to stop the heroes directly more than once. It's refreshing after so many modern JRPG villains who are generally more well-characterized, but not near as dumb or fun as "I turned myself into a splinter, Bartz! I'm Splinter Exdeath!"
