FF7R is unironically better than the original so far. If they don't completely frick up the ending, and let's be real they probably will, it could actually end up being the best FF game(s) of all time.

I played Remake before OG. They were both kinda ass. Both had their moments, but the gameplay fricking sucked and the writing of the overarching story is really bad and not very compelling. Sephiroth feels like a joke without his battle theme playing, even moreso in Remake.
Barret was the only consistently good element throughout both iterations. I actually liked the addition of President Shinra's monologue in Remake, although I think it should have been separate from his assassination.

I hate how stock everything looks, I wish gamedevs would go back to hiring artists instead of using stock marketplace assets.
This is something that baffled me the most. Interacting with npcs felt like something outta Dragon Quest or Tales, except those games have presumably 1/3rd the budget, if not less. And they have artstyles, so limited NPC design work and animation makes sense and doesn't standout too much.
Contrasted with the character designs, interacting with the NPCs in Remake made them seem legitimately like drag-and-drop assets. Skyrim of all things had better animations, voice acting, lip syncing, dialogue, and general design for its throwaway NPCs.
Where the frick did the budget for this game go? I'm baffled by how ugly it looks. It's even stranger because Rebirth looks virtually the same, despite being developed as a next-gen exclusive.
The game was in a development hell for a very long time and they changed engines multiple times too.
So it's the vidya equivalent of a tax write-off. What will be Rebirth's excuse I wonder?

nta, and I've been playing FFs since 2(SNES), but 7 hasn't aged too awful great at this point, and there is really a good port that modernizes it in any real way.
It's why a lot of people were hoping for a true remake with updated visuals than a complete reimagining.

Man, the padding was a nuisance at worst for me, but those last few chapters, I mean Jesus Christ, what the King Konging frick was that all about? Felt like a really phony try at ending the game on the same climactic high note as the original.

Difficult to say for you, but if it was me, yes. I largely haven't liked any of the modern FFs past the classic ones, though I imagined to get some small enjoyment from 10 and 12, even if it didn't feel great.

I just finished the original FFVII. The remake seems like ass besides the combat, but I'll give it a try.
The combat is ass. Quality-wise it's no different from the original, that being that it does its respective genre (Action, in this case) poorly, but covers it up with flashy animations and VFX, similar to VII and its Strategy-oriented combat. Hell, most boss fights are just glorified cutscenes.
You'll never feel clever fighting anything because despite some minimal effort in adding timing and combos, in the end because of the balancing issues that have plagued the series since its inception, they're unnecessary. You can just stand static and button mash until you need to pause to heal and it makes no difference.
The only minor exceptions are some VR bosses, which take place in a holodeck that nobody bothered to program image refraction into because they were lazy, I guess, and some story fights on Hard Mode. The latter of which you have to play through the atrocious Normal Mode first.

Never pay more than 20 bucks for a video game. In this case, I wouldn't really recommend it for free. It's just a waste of time. May as well just wait to get packaged release of the bullshit trilogy on sale in 2030, or better yet, pirate it.

All I wanted was the same game but with updated graphics. But the devs put us true and honest fans in the demake as a character. BAD character. They made defeating us the goal of the game and then said they are free to make changes to the story after we got defeated. HAHA! Joke's on them!
