it's so fricking weird how sword and shield being shit caused people to push this moronic narrative that it was somehow XY's fault

People were literally praising gen 7 for being a step up from gen 6 as soon as sun and moon. This wasn't even that long ago. If anything gen 8 made people like gen 6 a bit more since gen 8 usurped its title as the worst gen.
XY were shit. SM were worse. SS were even worse. SV were even worse than that. As the games got worse people were more critical of flaws in all Pokemon games, past or present. So when XY came out, they were bad, but they were fresh off of four of the best games, consecutively, so people gave them the benefit of the doubt. Now that we see that XY weren't a one-off miss, but the start of a four generation downwards trend, we can confidently say, no, they weren't good, they were shit.
