From a Design perspective, how did Nintendo get it so perfectly right with every iteration of the 3DS?

From a Design perspective, how did Nintendo get it so perfectly right with every iteration of the 3DS?

The original was sleek, sexy, glossy, and had sharp-ish corners that looked great. The XL had a more toyish look to it, but still had a great design, but the New3DS, specifically the red XL version, is one of the best looking handhelds ever made. I honestly still look over at my bookshelf and just think about how much I loved my 3DS. How was it so good?

The new 2ds was the best gaming investment I ever did.
I still use it for GBA and Snes shit.

With emulation it can, I just inject to the built in shit though.

I'm glad for you, anon. Always wanted to buy a New 2DS XL, but they're too expensive around here. Being a poorgay certainly doesn't help.

They didn't. The original 3DS is a piece of shit and the housing will disintegrate over time, even from the most gentle use.

The DS sucked. It ruined Monster Hunter too so it sucks even more than it should.

There hasn't been a good handheld since the PSP and GBA.

      >ruined mh
      More like improved it.
Not only the 3ds, the jump into portable itself with the psp forced them to add actual attacking controls from the get-go since there was no left stick.

If you consider the entire DS/DSi/3DS as one family of electronics, by the time they got to making the New 3DS they've gone through like 10 iterations of the basic design

That said though the dpad sucks ass to use, too close to the edge and the corner because they put focus on the stick. Nintendo unironically shouldn't have even put a dpad on there.

The 3ds felt like a cheap toy, had terrible durability, and the 3d effect looks shit, idk if they improved on iterations but I doubt it.

      They did.
The new 2ds xl could get steamrolled and still work.
Always lmao at gays who buy the first version of anything nintendo shits out and wonders why it goes bad so easy, they were using you to test their products every time and you still fell for it.
All you had to do is wait for a single new iteration and literally 70% of the problems are gone.

I will always b***h about my 2ds xl's top screen shattering just by being in my bag for a few hours, don't even have anything heavy sitting on it.

    >now have every GB, GBA, DS, 3DS game I ever want
    >even NES, SNES, Game Gear, SEGA Genesis if I want alongside other shit like NeoGeo or even Atari
I hate phones for killing handhelds. They were finally getting good. The 3D gimmick was stupid but they dumped it pretty much immediately so whatever.
    >BUT DA SWITCH IS A HANDHE-ACK
Can't fit in my pocket, not a handheld.

I actually really like the 3D gimmick. It's just that there were barely any games that used it well. 3DS needed more 3D platformers and racers.

The screen in every single one of these handhelds fricking sucks.
    >weird resolution in both screen that doesn't integer scale correctly with any gameboy and DS games, meaning everything that isn't 3DS native looks like a blurry mess
    >240p max to save cost because of 3D, which is a worthless meme. the person that came up with 3D needs to be tortured and executed.

Mine haven't drifted in over a year, though keep in mind I consciously protect it from dust and I don't really slip it into my pockets. That said, Switch lites are easy enough to open up and replace the sticks. You DO self repair instead of just buying new joycons, right?

          Never ever got joycon drift.
Not sure if it's because my joycons were from the new version with more battery life.
Also not defending nintendo, but half the idiots having light joycon drift don't even know you can fix it by calibrating them.

If you were an artist and ever tried out any of the art academy games, you'd swear the handheld dual screen factor was a revelation for digital art creation. Just give the thing a deeply pressure sensitive touch screen and it'd be perfection.

3DS being good was all thanks to the games.

the meme was dead by the time the console came out. Be honest, like me most of your turned it off and left it off 90% of the time. I can think of only ONE game where I kept it on.

Switch is more portable than a console.
        Less portable than a phone/Gameboy/DS/PSP/Vita/3DS.

        >Too large to fit in most pockets, outside of something like trench coat
        >due to it's long thin design a carrying case is 100% needed to safely travel it it

The Switch lite isn't TOO bad in terms of size.

While it's true the hybrid nature caused some compromises in its design, the portable only lite model is much more suited to portability. I honestly think it could have been even smaller if Nintendo hadn't opted to keep a similar form factor to the full model.

            couple of things.
Atleast in that picture it makes it seem like the joysticks stick out quite a bit, making it harder to get in/out of pockets.

and two, most importantly, though does not really have to do with it portablity is the Lite still has Joycons, and those joycons still drift.

At least read the post chain before spouting the drift meme. Fixing drift is real easy, even a monkey could do it. Anyways, I went and tested it myself, and the lite fits in my pocket just fine. You might have some trouble if you try to fit it into skinny jeans, though. I also just wouldn't suggest keeping it in your pocket with keys, for obvious reasons.

I’ve had all the Nintendo handhelds and the only one to break was the left shoulder button on my New 3DS standard and the 3D slider from extensive use. I just fixed it using a cheap one from eBay.

The ds/3ds was the oerfect design for handheld
Close shell allowing easy pocket carrying
2nd screen allows devs to stick all of the hud shit their instead of taking precious screen space up for the top screen which you need every incr since its a tiny handheld
Touch screen being in finger way allowing for multiple additional buttons
The only real issue was games that used a 2nd thumbstick for camera didnt work or had a janky compromise but extremely complex games that do need that shit shouldn’t really be on a handheld anyways tbh

Nintendo selects the internal parts and then focuses on the ergonomics. Except their focus of ergonomics is "how is a person going to use these controls for new games?" So they design hardware meant to be enjoyable for how a game "feels". Sony and Microsoft have never done anything like this so they never make anything unique or "ergonomic" for the sake of how a game might be played.
