he's right. numbers shouldnt be visible. they were visible in table top because you needed them for DM/player interaction. with computer doing all calculations you dont need to show the player the raw numbers, just convey them what the numbers represent, whether your skill with something is "good" or "bad". no one has made a real computer roleplaying game yet. theyre all tabletop simulations on pc.

His point wasn't to remove the point system.

His point is that you really only need three stats with those two choices to have an interesting RPG, anything else is useless. Which is absolute tard. This is what he calls the groundbreaking next-gen triangle system of stat distribution.

Also every system that remove points feel fricking vague and unsatisfying, like Starfield when you gain a skill that "do a bit more damage" and you ask yourself tf even a bit more damage means. No, believe me, you DON'T want vague terms in your RPGs.

          >No, believe me, you DON'T want vague terms in your RPGs.
but I do. rpgs that obfuscate mechanics are the best ones on the market. I'm not interested in crunching numbers. I want lots of random shit happening under the hood and i wanna surf on that chaos.

the writing was, for lack of a better term, reddit. it lacked charm or nuance, everything boiled down to 'corporation bad', which isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff. the side quests were weak, same with the companions. i did every companion quest and the only one i can remember is where you set up a dinner date for a lesbian. gripping stuff.

But corporates are really bad. Call me when it's actually woke shit like saying straight sex bad or white and white adjacents bad.

        Anonymous

'corporate bad' has been old hat fodder in books and movies and music since the industrial revolution. it's boring but it was in vogue at the time to be le enlightened anti-capitalist, so they went that route. people call starfield boring but at least it had shit like the terrormorphs and spaceships you could actually move about in 3D. outer worlds is not only boring, it's tone is weirdly smug

Idgaf as long as it's not woketard and woke unironically loves to conspire with corporates, so anti-corps is in my good book.

How is 'Corporation bad' a bad thing ? People seems to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077's story despite the fact that the story is basically a Capitalist dystopia on steriod. I think the story as a whole is just not that good or maybe something else or maybe both.

Wasn't Tim Cain a programmer on Fallout anyways? Programmers are only good at programming and maybe game design. Leonard Boyarsky being an artist has some cool isolated ideas that resulted in some cool things in Fallout, but you need some actual writers if you want to make a good story.

If you watch Tim’s YouTube channel, he details how the original Fallout was lightning in a bottle and a massive collaborative effort from a bunch of total nerds who were personally invested in the idea. Fallout was a LOT more than just Tim and Leonard.

Outer Worlds is not that. Outer Worlds is factory manufactured garbage designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator in current year.

I also want to say the art direction in outer worlds is horrific. That is one ugly game.

It's true you know, they agreed to lend obsidian a serviceable template to make the game in (it really is just an elaborate Fallout 3 mod) and the IP. In terms of game development that is monumental.

I recently played through this game because I had friends who told me I would like it. (They were wrong) first playthrough was on hardcore or whatever the highest difficulty was/is. I went in expecting a fallout adjacent game in space that was more linear.
    - RPG / combat mechanics. I don't know fricking how they did this. But the combat in this game is a literal chore and it's un fricking fun. Enemies are bullet sponges. Different damage types for different enemies is what they were trying to get at, but acid damage and the electricity damage types are the only two you need. Having to invest money into guns to have them do anything in the late game makes the engineering skill essentially mandatory. The player isn't really encouraged to explore because hording items isn't really useful in this game at all really. You just break items down into parts to upgrade the shit you are going to be using for the next 10 or so levels until the name and pallete swap defacto upgraded version of the same weapon you are currently using appears. Collecting anything feels like a waste. Weapons don't really feel strong. (Until you gain engineering skill then you become a literal dealer of death)
Armor doesn't feel strong either. Nor does it really look cool. In fallout I hoarded every piece of power armor I could get my hands on because it looks cool and sells well. (I also have dreams of reverse pickpocketting factions I liked to protect all their memebers)
    -Story
This should be the strongest part but it's also pretty meh. Crazy scientist dude wakes you up to fix the universe. None of the story choices feel meaningful. None of the companions mattered. Another anon mentioned this already but a romance option might have been nice. The entire world feels too sterile. I did like the first planets story however.
Tldr : story is 6.5/10 , rpg skill progression sucks and doesn't feel fun, combat is a chore. Like other anons mentioned I have no idea how these people made new vegas.

      >Like other anons mentioned I have no idea how these people made new vegas.

New Vegas was aimed at the existing fanbase of two niche, PC-exclusive games from the late 90s. Elegant games for a more civilized age. Outer Worlds looks to have been made to court the approval of vapid game journos and YouTubers of the late 2010s. Games that chase trends rarely turn out well.

Yeah the first two seasons are basically Newgrounds humour repacked for TV, and very millennial. But it does become more zoomeresque as it goes along. They start adding in sentimentality and tragic touches, as well as moments of self-recrimination for Rick - he's acts this way because underneath it all he's very depressed you see. He becomes a "just like me" character, which is something zoomers are known to enjoy.

It's just the epitome of mediocre. It doesn't do anything exceptionally good or truly awful, because of that nothing is very memorable about it.
The only real positive thing I can say about it is the amount of ending permutations is fairly extensive.
