God. Lumiose and Castelia really had us eating good, and they were just one hub city spread among a bunch of nice routes and towns.
The closest thing we even got in Alola is either Hau'oli or Malie. But the latter just has the Kantonian professor that tells you about Kanto in the library across the street from the Kantonian gym. Say what you want about Lumiose being a mess to explore, it definitely had the same sense of belonging that Castelia did in Unova where it made you feel like you were really traversing through a bustling locale.

The first route is literally a hallway with no wild encounter, the first dungeon is a carbon copy of viridian forest down to the encounter, and the first cave is an actual straight line with 0 exploration besides going right once. It's crazy to see a region that well-crafted again honestly. I'll never forget finishing the story and realizing there was a second half of the region to explore with a bunch of returning oldmons. It was like Gen 2 all over again.
It's incredibly unfortunate the only region to really capture that same sense of adventure afterwards was Kalos all the way until Paldea. But it's still compounded by the fact that XY were just shit games with shit pacing.

What a load of ass. Gen 5's second half felt like missing content they blocked off to pretend there was a post game because there is nothing in it. BW2 made it so blatantly obvious.
Still kind of miffed about Alola. That fourth island really should have had two trial captains to bring the total to an even 8.
alola would be seen so much better if they had replay ability. The fricking handholding cutscene bullshit is just too much man.
Goes to show how pacing and presentation go a long way in making a game more quality. The second half of Kalos similarly is rapid-fire gyms yet the pacing in Unova made it feel a lot more meaty.
I'd prefer either instead of shit all the way through like Alola/Galar shat out. Like it or hate it, every non-tutorial route in Gens 5 and 6 were peak map design.

I played BW and XY back to back
Doing campaign+postgame for both XY took me longer to beat by a few hours
would have been even longer if I decided to get all the Battle Maison trophies but I skipped doing everything other than singles
XY's routes definitely felt like they had more to do than BW's. The high Pokemon variety helps replayability a lot.

It probably has a lot to do with pacing. Unova's routes are built similarly but are fed to you as a slow-burn where Kalos's routes have a bunch of little side areas with HMs that you typically won't experience until the second go around.

I'd imagine they would match up better if the storyline in Kalos didn't just blaze you through. It takes until the very end with Route 16 to break the pace with side routes in which case you get a nice little shortcut back to Lumiose. This is opposed to Unova where the side routes are mostly entirely optional or post-game.

That list doesn't, but it does count each of the Lumiose City streets as an individual location which would make it 76. I did notice that they forgot the Trainer PR studio, so it's about even. Regardless, they're both significantly smaller than the regions that came before them.

Because Gen 6 routes aren't a joke like Black and White. My only criticism is once you get past lumiose, the gyms kinda start to fall like dominos. but the time between the first 4 gyms in XY was some of the best pacing in all of Pokemon.

Ive always said up till the foruth gym X/Y felt like a real adventure. The mansion part should have been optional though
