Killing, stealing etc is generally looked down upon within most societies and saving yourself for marriage is still treated like an expression of virtue, so much that the idea of seducing someone into breaking said chastity is a popular sexual fantasy (see: nun porn). It's good to remember that western society has Christian values hard coded into it. Even if you never stepped inside a church in your life you will still have taken in a lot of its ideals because they already fell under common sense. It's because a lot of aspects about being human are artificial and societies built their own "how to human" basic kits to make life within a collective easier. So, it was easy for the public to disregard gay sex as an undesirable, perverted lifestyle. You didn't needed to be from the church to think "this guy is a pervert".
As for the LGBT, the institution saw value in gathering different groups that experienced similar problems, increasing their politicql influence as they had bigger numbers and a bigger pull. They also found a lot of success in building their identity around the ideals of pacifism and acceptance. This allowed their group to be seen in a more positive light by society, as ideals like that are generally seen as more attractive and worth preserving.
For the record, this isn't a personal attack on the LGBT. My goal was to explain why the Christian community gave them a different treatment. It's a complicated thing.

It's good to remember that western society has Christian values hard coded into it. Even if you never stepped inside a church in your life you will still have taken in a lot of its ideals because they already fell under common sense.
