Best world generator ever made. Actual gameplay is abysmal. 10x10 square of farmland can feed hundreds forever. Happiness system bugged. Garbage interface makes simple things tedious, even after hundreds of hours and muscle memory. You can seal your base with a drawbridge and immediately nullify any outside danger. It's unbalanced, far too easy, and every base inevitably dies due to FPS death. Any other colony simulator does what DF does a thousand times better.

You buy a masterwork barrel off some traders. It was looted from a fort another player made. inscribed in it is a scene of a giant cave spider being slain by Urist McSpiderFricker wielding his masterwork sword “old arms”
You can go in adventure mode to the actual fort that another player made, snoop around their layout and discover hidden in the tomb of Urist McSpiderFricker the legendary sword “old arms”

Toady has confirmed that after the steam release, and maybe a small filler update the next major update will in fact be the Magic System few years back.
I've been playing DF for 11 years now and I've mastered most of it in a year. Nothing notable has changed since DF2012. The biggest problem of DF is Tarn himself. He is becoming more autistic with passing time and he is getting worse at programming the game too. Zach is the creative brother and he is barely involved in game design anymore, so Tarn the Autist is left to do everything by himself. If he were smarter, he would have employed people to reprogram the game and unscramble his spaghetti code, but his pride won't let him. Dwarf Fortress was a great game for its time, but it has outlived its usefulness.
It's time to move on.

People forget that the dwarfs are supposed to be semi-autonomous, like the sims are with free-will turned on. They're going to break from your orders sometimes
