I don't understand why these people make hour-long video essays instead of making their own games. They're obviously analytical and creative on some level, I feel like it would be soul-draining to center your career around talking about other people's art instead of creating your own.
We had a few of those people try to make their own games/whatever medium they focus on and it's always been bad or at best mediocre. Just because you know how to critique something doesn't mean you can create. This also ignores that majority of these morons, especially the several hour long type, don't know how to actually critique and are just severely autistic nitpicking every detail
Some people like myself actually enjoy watching an depth analysis of a piece of media they regard with high esteem. It helps you think about things you might have missed throughout your initial playthrough, and makes you anticipate going into the game for a second time to witness it yourself. I wouldn't watch however some nerd yapping for more than 2 hours for example, that's just excessive and I have my limits. When it comes to things like lore, I prefer watching some guy summarize it to me than just reading about it on the wiki.
"Those who can't do, teach."
They're people who wish they could make games but are to lazy and afraid to actually put in the time and effort, so they do the next best thing of being an armchair game designer where they criticize everything since they think they'd be able to do it so much better.
Making something would also leave them vulnerable, it would open them to the same kind of criticism they give and critics like that tend to be to up their own ass to let that happen.
>I don't understand why these people make hour-long video essays instead of making their own games.
Because it's hard. Splicing together a 10 hour video of you talking nonsense for 30 minutes per splice isn't.
Who the frick watches retrospective videos on shit they haven't played? I only watch them because they sometimes help me get my own thoughts in order or catch smaller things I might have overlooked.
I knew somebody who would regurgitate other YouTubers' gaming opinions and act like they were his own. Me and a friend had asked him if he had played the game he was talking about once and he said no.
I feel like there's a degree of self awareness with titles like that these days. If someone makes a retrospective over an hour long and titles it like that, they're definitely taking the piss. Although I guess it's relative. A 7 hour retrospective for a series consisting of like 10 or more games could be considered short, but a 7 hour retrospective for, like, I dunno, Quest 64 would definitely be long as frick.
My friend from middle school used to make powerpoint presentations on video games every time it was assigned. I wonder if he's become a video essayist, making bank.
too bad Lycoris Recoil didn’t.

>highschool essays and exams requires you to be able to write within a specific time frame, forcing you to learn how to be accurate and concise with your ideas and talking points >utubers just spend 200 hours making one 10 hours long video talking about one subject by over analyzing literally every single fricking detail from their favorite video game
God I hate Americans
My peeve is when it's called a "retrospective" but it's just a kid playing an old classic for the first time and rattling off how he felt.
Are you really "looking back" on it if it's all brand new to you?
what happened to the karegui or whatever images?
His forced meme attempt didn't catch on so now he's trying with a different anime.

The first step is understanding the art you like, obviously.
Yes, but making a career out of it? I'm not saying it's not respectable but at some point, wouldn't you just want to start making your own games?
So you should just become a youtuber? Milking overanalytical bullshit for views and income?
Usually, critics are not very good at being creative in the field they're criticizing.

is extremely rare for critics to be good creators
not just for videogames but in general
>I don't understand why these people make hour-long video essays instead of making their own games
Those two things aren't the same, you silly person.
>They're obviously analytical and creative on some level
Media "criticism" is just b***hing while sounding articulate, it's hardly creative.
They just ramble for 7 hours and lzily add clips to it
If they were good writers and editors they would be 45 minutes long

>it's just a retelling of every event in the game in chronological order bloated with skits and life stories
God I hate that shit. The worst part is that you know most of the people watching those videos haven't played the game for themselves.
