if i meet a black character in a game i know they'll be a reliable ally. if i meet a blue eyed character in a game i expect betrayal and them to monologue justifying extremist ethics. i just like making fun of art. like when i was a kid i laughed hysterically about record skips and other cliches of the time. i make fun of marvel dialogue. i make fun of overused characters. it just so happens that this is our current world. there was a time like our current art in the 80s sorta and people made fun of it and are even making movies now nostaligically lampooning it like The American Society of Magical Black folks

literally every single group of people based on race, ethnicity, nationality and religion have been enslaved or subjugated at some point in history or are currently still are enslaved or subjugated. idk why people like to flex about the enslavement of African people in America so much, it's par the course of human history.

Because African people in America love to flex it, to get pitty points and to defend themselves from criticism.
Maybe stop bringing up racism and slavery every time, and people will forget it, like they've forgotten European serfdom and half the continent being the private property of some kraut.

                >Because African people in America love to flex it, to get pitty points and to defend themselves from criticism.
It's only ever brought up in the context of why black Americans are currently still lagging behind in America. As the entire country is still recovering the effects of slavery and segregation. Outside of history and literature classes no one mentions it. It's really not a part of our daily lives. It's just annoying seeing people try to use it as a slam dunk online when their own families were slaves too and probably ended up in the North America, Australia and New Zealand as indentured servants, they were just lucky enough to be white.

I'm not in the USA, and most of my US culture contact is movies, music and sports. And in these, it gets brought up by many black american men, much of the time, usually on a superficial level, usually to talk about "us vs them" and how "them" don't let us thrive.
At least from where I am standing, and from what I am seeing, its not different from israelites bringing up holocaust only on such occasions, only to say such things, while ignoring other mass killings in history.

But nobody except maybe the israelites were enslaved for so long.

Africans were traded in America between 1550 and 1850, for 300 years.
More people, for more years, were slaves of the Sultan in the Balkans, without the right to own land, or move freely, and conscripted for force labour and paying first born sons for the janissary army.
African-american slavery is the most famous slavery, because modern USA is the main engine of global culture, so we are all living in Amerika, Amerika, its wundabah, and we all know their memes. Meanwhile, they don't know ours dank memes, and lack the grounds to compare themselves to us.

Do you honestly think that Africans were only traded to Americans?

I was familiar with the setting's tone so I knew it would be bittersweet at best, tragic otherwise. I'm glad they stuck to the route and I don't understand why people complain about the new Phantom Liberty ending, it's really not "the worst ending" by a long shot. Possibly the most positive even.

Ehh, I was satisfied with what ending I got and yeah, having some secret happy ending where everyone shits rainbows and all TCD occurs would be tone deaf.

It's sad in the sense that all your relationships in Night City are bust, you're a total nobody again and you can never become an epic cyber ninja ever again (ignoring the fact that biomods exist but are ignored by the game). Your girl/boyfriend leaves you but frankly you were only together for a few months. Johnny is gone but he was fine with that fact by the end, it's your life. Hell, Kerry might even come back to you if you hooked up with him, he's just busy at the moment.
It's happy in the sense that you truly do get a clean break, you're alive, you're cured, you can do almost anything with your new life. Want a job in the NUSA? Probably covered. Want to move to Europe with your accrued money? Possible. Want to become a fixer like Rogue? Doable even if a dumb idea. V is dead, Valerie/Vincent gets to live and leave that shithole. Can't save the world but you saved yourself.

Definitely. Johnny is a monumental frickup but he also isn't wrong. When Keanu's involvement with the game was announced I took it as a cynical celebrity marketing scheme yet he turned out to be the heart and soul of the game.

I never understood the idea that America promotes BBC or whatever. On Disney channel every black male character was either fat or a literal cuck. There was a show ANT farm where the main characters black brother spent the whole show getting bullied and rejected

            Anonymous

They're trying to promote the idea of black guys as entirely harmless to get the public to stick to the, "and then the civil rights act was passed and everything became great, YAY," script.
The BBC fetish got its start in America, but I have no idea who's keeping it alive.

            It is deliberate.
They want to stereotype blacks as intelligent and harmless in media to get people to believe that they are the same in real life.
It is the same reason why the villain is always White, the angry racist is always White, the incompetent piece of shit that fricks everything up is White, etc...
Meanwhile the genius gearhead/techie/scientist is black, the person who provides sage wisdom to help the protagonist is black (the magical Black), the honorable and chivalrous crime fighter is black, etc...

they put in what they have to work with, language, food and le epin "tradcath family values". sure it makes me angry it's the same stupid clichés but one can understand they aren't going to study politics, historical events and detailed metropolitan maps just to give characters slightly more fluff that is only understood by .001 of the playerbase that understand the references.

Jackie was actually a very cool character but his screen time was way too short to really miss him after he dies. Dude dies after like 3 hours of story and you're supposed to miss him like you knew him forever.
I have read an interesting theory that before they decided to hire the wholesome chungus Keanu and create Johnny Silverhand the initial idea for the plot was that Jackie's mind gets written into the chip that ends up in your head. This makes sense considering that Jackie narrates your questlog.

      Anonymous

Jackie narrates your questlog until his death, after that Johnny does it.
I can see that idea but I'm glad they went with Johnny. Jackie is a pretty simple character and very similar to V in motivations. Johnny adds some edge because he's intensely charismatic but also extremely egotistic and it takes a while for him to realize how badly he fricked up everything in his life. Adds nice narrative conflict and seeing V and Johnny become more similar to each other is kinda uncanny.

        Anonymous

Johnny is there to show you WHY people endure what they endure in this world.
He talks about "making it big" until his last, like the good little gaijin that he is.

          Anonymous

Yeah, he shares the same motives with V and thus would be quite redundant in an engram dynamic. And all the endings of the game are about V being forced to leave their old life behind and becoming a new person, abandoning that dream so they didn't need a second character to spell it out.

            Anonymous

Yeah, I was surprised how bad all of the endings are, not in execution but in the outcome.
