4E is the best combat system they ever designed and the only D&D system where martials were actually fun to play. All the problems it had would be solved in a CRPG, as well. The worst part of BG3 is the combat, especially as a martial, it's mind numbing even with all the little extras Larian threw in.

There almost never were good companions in crpg's. Torment is the only game that had truly amazing ones. BG2 is maybe the next closest thing, but the margin between them is still huge.
One of the entire reasons the Mass Effect games did well was because so many people liked the companions, most of the threads on the game to this day mainly talk about Tali/Wrex/Garrus/Legion and the plot points in the story centered around them.
Yeah, Mass Effect had great companions too. Garrus is the best bro companion in any RPG as far as I'm concerned.
It's funny how Mass Effect 2 had an absolute non-story for its main plot, but the squad members and their side missions were so good that it elevated the game from what would've been a pile of relative trash.

BG1 barely had companions, they had a few barks and maybe 2-3 sentences of dialogue. BG2 was the first time they had real writing for the companions, and yeah the BG2 companions are fantastic and still well loved to this day.
Whose talking about BG1? The companions are famously trash there, they barely talk. You have to get fanfiction mods like NPC Project to give them life. BG2 is where they came into their own.

Personally I agree with you, BG2 is the superior game hands down. But my point is that clearly there is more at play here then just the companions. I'd be surprised if most people here haven't played it.
BG1 is a good game because it really feels like a low level D&D adventure, you start out killing wolves and kobolds and slowly build up in power while going wherever you want and exploring the world, while the story slowly takes shape. It's a great game and you can have just as much fun with it creating an entirely custom party rather than using the pregenerated NPCs, since they are not the focus or crux of the game.
But your companions aren't the focus of Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous either. So who gives a shit if the companions are average at best? You can just dump them at the earliest opportunity at no consequence to you or the story. Or if you want to use them but don't care about their story you just don't do the story and it fails and never gets brought up again. How is that any different than BG1? BG1 is good enough everyone here agrees. So how is this any different?

The WOTR companions have shit tons of dialogue, are heavily involved in the story, are often key and important characters in the world itself, and have entire questlines that revolve around them. It's all badly written trash, but the content is there. Meanwhile the BG1 companions are completely superfluous to both the world and story, barely ever even talk, and have no impact on either your character or the world.
If the WOTR companions were just random guys with a few one liners about why they're in the Crusade and that was it, you could make the argument. Tragically, that is not the case, as that would've been a significant improvement over what the companions actually were in WOTR.
Not him, but I think the point is that old school games like Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 set the gold standard for how NPC party members in fantasy CRPG's should be, and that no modern CRPG has come close to them in terms of the quality of writing. They're hard acts to follow, especially Planescape.
Personally, I think modern CRPG's have plenty of decent companions, but there's no comparing them to the classics.
PST seems almost impossible to beat, all of the companions are amazing. The interactions with Dak'kon alone, learning then teaching the Circle Of Zerth'imon, remains the best set of interactions with an NPC I've ever seen in ANY game.

He's not great but he's more interesting than most of the Kingmaker cast, that's about it. Jubilost is the only companion in the game that remains interesting the whole way through, his personal quest was the highlight of the entire game for me.
I played that and the only character I thought was written well was Jubilost. The rest were either just okay/decent (Ekun'dayo, Linzi, Nok-Nok, the twins) or outright forgettable/garbage (the rest).
I'm clearly talking about crgp's WITH companions though. There's no complaint if I'm playing one without them, is there.

So what? If you break down the data in RPGs genuinely 70-90% of people play either Human or Elf in every RPG with standard race selections ever made. This is true even in MMOs, look at WoW, almost the entire playerbase is Humans, Blood Elves, and Night Elves, they genuinely comprise 70-80% of the entire games population. The other races are frankly superfluous and there is no reason to waste developer resources and time modelling or animating them just for the illusion of "choice" when in reality the VAST majority of your playerbase is just going to pick one of two races anyway.
Which is really what this whole meme originated from, Larian put in tons of work making all of the other races only to realize that all the nice animation touches and modelling they did even for races like Tieflings or Gith were a complete waste of time and almost all of their players were just going to pick Human or Elf anyway. So what was even the point of putting in all that work on the other races? CRPG companies need to wake up to this reality and adjust accordingly, their development process would definitely benefit from cutting off the unnecessary fat. I'd much rather have an additional quest line or another dungeon than meme race picks in character creation only a tiny percentage of people will ever play or care about.

Trash take. Alternative races are for replays with different classes with different mechanical bonuses. Also you can make a non human race look cool, they just often suck at it.
This is just sheer cope and always has been. Most people don't even bother finishing a game once, and among those that do, fewer still from that number ever replay a second time. And of THOSE, most just pick Human or Elf again anyway. There is legitimately no reason to spend time on fully modeling and detailing races for the protagonist that virtually no one will use or care about.
This game is actually a prime example of wasted resources, it is extremely reactive to what race or class you are, so they had to take the time to code out specific reactions in tons of conversations that respond to your race choice. This is many, many hours of development that could've gone towards building new questlines, more in depth interactions and conversations with the NPCs or companions, or simply more dungeon or overworld content.
And for what? A tiny fraction of your playerbase that would've been just fine playing a Human or Elf anyway, which is another facet I haven't even covered. Even the minuscule fragment of your playerbase that want to play something like a Halfling would still buy and play the game anyway if they like CRPGs, so you're not even losing the majority of those players if you don't bother with the option. It's just wasted time and effort with virtually no reward or payout that could've gone towards making content for a much larger section of the playerbase which is a much better use of time that leads to a better game in the end.

Reactivity is good, wasting time and resources on reactivity for races virtually no one will play or use is bad. I'd rather have more class reactivity and more in depth branching options based on that, or specific quest branches based on being Human or Elf than adding tons of lines for things like Halflings or Gnomes or Githyanki that virtually no one will ever see or care about. Time and resources are finite, why waste them on such irrelevant and trivial things? The game would be better if developers dropped those races entirely and focused on making other, actually relevant races and content more polished and deep.

Playing cleric in 5e tabletop is broken as frick. Not only do you wear heavy armor and can easily get your AC to 20+ before level 5 but you can cast spells from many schools of magic out your ass. You are the tank, healer and support of your group. Only thing holding them back a little is their 8 hit die.

I noticed they made halflings and gnomes the same height even though gnomes are usually taller. They probably don't want to do new cut/sex scenes for different body types.
The last two races are dragon born and half orc. They will both have a big boy body type based on data-mined racial reactions. If there is going to be a variant human it will be when one of those races drops.

I do but 1 extra feat is not worth not having darkvision if your DM uses dark-light mechanics. Even more if he uses them properly which means that when you are in a light area your dark-vision doesnt work and so the passive perception of your team further than 30 feet gets fricked the moment you light a torch lol.
Variant Human is a direct result of what I've talked about in this thread, the vast majority of RPGs playerbase will only play a Human or an Elf, and many are Human only since they dislike being an actual fantasy race, but regular Humans were arguably weaker than the other 5E races. So, in order to please their market, WoTC just created a mechanically overpowered version of Human so that all their players could have their cake, and eat it too. Honestly a good decision, even if you make the other races mechanically strong people will still just play Humans anyway, and just complain about being weak rather than ever actually playing anything else.
Let's face it, outside of Elves, every other fantasy race is an objective failure. No one ever wants to play them, they just want to be a Human or an Elf. You can give players every reason under the sun, mechanically, aesthetically, lore, whatever, to play something else, and they simply won't do it. RPGs need to put aside the childish and disproven fallacy that other fantasy races can be fun and interesting to their playerbase, and accept the reality of Human/Elf dominance. It will save a lot of time and effort, and result in better games in the end.

Why? Freebooter gives + to attack and damage to all members of the party and you get 1 extra party member (aivu), ranger feats give you all the shield bash related feats even if you put full STR, and you get full AC for medium armor with a belt of physical perfection.
Also since shield basher characters get extra bashes for each critical it merges well with azata path since they have a superpower that make your crits even more powerful.

I don't see what the problem is, even Bane was adjusted to look more Asian/White to better fit into the setting. As long as your character is Evil, it's perfectly fine to be Asian/White, it's when you make Evil characters racially coded as non white that things go awry. At least, according to WoTC and their current designers.

That's a nationality issue, not a racial issue. Racially speaking, Asians are at least White adjacent and most Critical Whiteness Studies are agreed that, while Eastern Asians are not as privileged as European Whites, they share many of the common privileges and advantages that true POC have no access to and will never experience, as in, the living experience a true POC has is something an East Asian cannot understand because they are fundamentally accepted as having elements of Whiteness that other POC can never possess.

In your given example, no racism is occurring, it is simply two privileged groups coming into conflict with each other, they cannot and never will experience true racism because they are intrinsically benefiting from the social and political structures of their society, rather than suffering from them. If a White European discriminates against another White European, even if they do so on a basis of nationality, you cannot claim that there is racist intent or action occurring since both people involved are inherently privileged. The same is true of East Asians, another inherently privileged group.
The problem with East Asians is that they refuse to acknowledge and accept their White adjacency status, and instead attempt to co-opt the suffering and humiliation of other, actually oppressed POC who have to live in a world that is inherently hostile and racist towards them in its very construction. This is why many are questioning if East Asians are truly allies to fixing the many ills in society, or if they want to maintain the terrible injustices that POC suffer through daily because they personally benefit and do well from their status as White adjacent in the system and prosper due to this. It's all very hypocritical, which is why many believe East Asians should simply be outright classified as White altogether, so they can stop being used as a wedge preventing racial solidarity against the oppressive nature of White society.

Villains are 99% of the time more interesting than heros anyway, so if that is the image they want to paint for white people I'm ok with it. a Cleric doesn't just heal, they're also 9th level casters with martial weapons and armor and access to the 2nd best spell list in the game and unlike wizards they can freely change what spells they bring every single day. Also "healbawd" is not an actual thing, women are stereotyped as playing support because developers make the role braindead easy to encourage people to play something unpopular, if healing or support was the most difficult role in league or overwatch or MMOs or whatever women avoid it like the plague
