which were funny since the quality of their portraits was so much different they were immediately marked as being modder inserts.
but yeah it was simple as anything to make your own portraits for the IE games. They just had to fit a certain dimensions size and you could make your portraits be pictures of anything. You could've been a bottle of Mountain Dew.

It's an interesting question, because if I am to be as unbiased as possible, some of these look really good, esp. Imoen, Viconia, Nalia... all the girls actually. But there is something off about them, ironically because they look *too* good compared to the original versions, so my mind resists the swap. For a complete newcomer to BG these would probably be a straight upgrade though.

That's not my criteria or approach at all. Some of the originals were quite wonky, take Imoen or Nalia for example. Viconia was infamously just a tracing over some porn chick. I could see how some people might find them amateurish or lazy.
It's a bit of a mixed bag after all now that I'm making a side by side comparison; while I would love to take OP's Imoen with me, the (half-)elven characters lost some of their otherness. They're not supposed to be humans with pointy ears. And there's subtle emotion that's lost as well for Aerie and Imoen, but you have to know their character history to realize that.
the might and magic portraits are incredible ugly but they are still way more soulful than trash like Pathfinder
M&M portraits are incredible because they serve their function perfectly.
Ugly = soulful is not a shortcut I'm willing to concede, but yes there is charm in the original portraits, even if not everyone is looking they're posing for Amn's Vogue.
Imperfect perfection is a good way to put it. The AI can struggle with simple and universally relatable concepts of "this character has seen some shit."
Kingmaker's portraits are soul incarnate. WotR is worse because their lead artist went to work for CDPR.

especially the women look off, because the amount of detail is higher since they tend to have more illuminated faces compared to the men, thus revealing more of the imperfect perfection AI is incapable of shedding.
nobody looks worse than irenicus, though, he looks like he is a plastic action figure with 4 posable limbs.
the portraits were always weird in these games because they got a team of artists to make them all. art styles were contradicting to each other. thank shit always bugged me. I like my owner custom portraits
