It was the most 'safe' sequel they could have possibly made, but by that same measure it is extremely sterile and unimaginative, both in gameplay and art. DS3 is also the most nostalgia pandering game I have ever played that wasn't doing it ironically.

Dark Souls 3 was the final polishing of the formula Demon's Souls started.

      >All locations feel necessary, feasible and have a reason to exist. Boletaria and Lothric feel like actual kingdoms, instead of a bunch of locations mashed together with nonsensical geography
      >Firelink Shrine is The Nexus. A hub system like Demon’s Souls. Fire Keeper (火防女) is literally the Maiden in black "黒衣の火防女", with 火防女 being the same word used for firekeepers in Dark Souls
      >Exact same sound for picking up items
      >Lothric Castle (DaS3) == Boletaria Castle (DeS). You start the game here, and the climax of the game is here (twin princes/false king allant), complete with red-eye knights. complete with dragons hanging around
      >The path to the Twin Princes is Boletaria's 1-1; path to the Phalanx. Red eye knights and blue eyes. Allant had two dragons, two dragons block the path in the dragon barracks.
      >Anri and the related quest is based heavily of Ostrava of Boletaria
      >Catacombs of Carthus and Smouldering Lake are challice dungeons. Underground Lava level with bugs(Stonefang, Izalith, Smouldering Lake)
      >Irithyll is Cainhurst Castle. Irithyll Dungeon is extremely reminiscent of Tower of Latria Prison of Hope
      >The three main lords of cinder from the opening cinematic (Aldrich, The Abyss Watchers, and Yhorm) kind of mirror Phalanx, Penetrator, and Tower Knight. After them you have the princes, mirroring the (false) king
      >Auto-revival (embering) after a boss (or helping as a phantom)
      >upgrade gems that work like Demon's Souls upgrade paths
      >Faith giving hp regen with blessed for instance. Blessed weapons regen, there's a regen ring, Adjuticator shield/Ancient Dragon Greatshield has a regen effect, and you have a regen miracle
      >End game is huge castle with many bosses as you climb to the top to fight the twin princes/king allant
      >Halflight, Spear of the Church is Old Monk

God, what an absolute derivative dumpster fire of a game. You can really tell they'd run out of ideas at this point.

Ds3 is the “love letter” to the franchise. Its the best of the souls games. The final boss is your character from the first game. There isn’t a more kino experience than that

It rides its predecessors coattails so slavishly that it has no identity of its own whatsoever. It is the summer blockbuster of Souls games.

It isn't. It includes so much corner cutting that it loses the essence of what makes these games good.
      >Enemies, bosses, NPCs, items and levels have been made to be shuffled around liberally, there's barely any thematic connection between any elements
      >Enemies all follow a standard formula of rushing you to get the first attack in or otherwise lasting just long enough to endure one full round of you emptying your stamina bar
      >Bosses are just generic two-phase encounters in a featureless box
      >Game includes warping to every ubiquitous checkpoint from the start
      >Never any reason to go back to or through areas
      >World is laid out like a line with 7 branches iirc, and that's including DLC

      >sure it has the best gameplay but it’s still the worst game because…it just is, okay?!

The gameplay was always kind of ancillary. It needs to be functional and slightly above par for 7th and 8th gen tripe, but that's about it. You can tell that there are shortcomings when you look at something like Sekiro that starts to more extensively divorce the gameplay from the rest of that Souls experience and it ends up feeling like it isn't doing enough.

      >Halflight, Spear of the Church is Old Monk

Lothric feels like a long linear tunnel. You branch off about 3 times to get a thing (Some key item from some church, deciding whether to kill the giant or the twink first, deciding how far to go into Lothric castle). The game relies heavily on warping you back and forth from the hub to make you feel like everything still makes sense. Everything has been quite gratuitously shuffled around so it might make little sense at times unless you take into consideration how thing might have been in an earlier build of the game, like that one npc from the wolf themed knights who wants to be a dragon themed knight for some reason, which doesn't make sense if the Farron legion is just in a swamp somewhere.

Dark Souls has nothing more to offer that its combat. Exploration is only fun in Demon's Souls and Elden Ring.

Exploration isn't fun in Elden Ring. Too much of the architecture has been copy and pasted and there are too many checkpoints everywhere.

Ringed city has the kino bosses that define the game. The princess demon, Sister and Father, Slave Knight Gael. These guys are the definitive souls bosses. An unpredictable monster, a undying spirit, and the greatest warrior to ever exist. The fight with Gael is so smooth, he gets a new move every 1/8th health and when his cape transitions into the red smoke and wings, holy kino

May as well ask here: can someone explain to me the Soul of Cinder? I get what it's meant to be, but logistically how is it only a thing "now"? How does it factor the other Lords of Cinder or the other lords who linked the flame that you have to round up in the present time especially when you consider the starting cutscene of the supposed "Red Knight"?

I'm genuinely curious since I missed a lot of the discussions when the game came out back then. No I don't want to watch shitty "lore" videos and I never will.

Soul's 3 locations and pacing aren't the greatest but it stills more satisfying than most of Dark Souls 1 unless you're an nostalgic autist that thinks world building, real space, shortcuts, etc are more important than actual gameplay.

No comment on DS1 vs 3 specifically, but-
Does only combat count as "actual gameplay" to you? Surely exploration, atmosphere, architecture, and general level design are very important parts of the experience in a game like Dark Souls?

Both are important, and real space/shortcuts/level/encounter design in general also count as gameplay.
